Jeez, the disconnect about pay-scale is astounding.

As a Scottish person I'd have yeeted their asses out pronto - it's one thing going into a big chain pub or restaurant to use facilities, although still somewhat frowned upon, but to take up a third of a restaurant while buying one drink? No, nope, not happening. We're a welcoming and friendly bunch of people (mostly) but we have a limited tolerance for arsehole behaviour, which this group most certainly are guilty of. It astounds me that these people didn't come to their senses and realise they were being unreasonable

It's a very important topic to learn about, but also a very painful and depressing topic, so it's totally legit to not want to learn about this during your vacation in which you just want to relax and feel happy. But why on earth would you then go on a tour on a plantation, how could you not think they were gonna tell you about that?

I have news for this person that’s going to burst their little bubble. Gone With the Wind is fiction. Real life on antebellum plantations was sheer hell for the majority of the people living in them. That majority consisted of slaves, who weren’t even counted as whole people, much less treated as such. Theirs was a brutal existence, with the spectre of inhumane punishment for even the slightest mistake hanging over them. Hell, considering this was the middle of the 19th century, to a way lesser extent it wasn’t all moonlight and magnolias on Easy Street, even for the white families that owned them. The husbands generally had some kind of work they did, and the wives worked at managing the household, which consisted of many people who all their own specific duties. So, the tour guides are telling you the truth, warts and all, instead of perpetuating the kind of myth that would only please members of the Daughters of the Confederacy, whose families want to gloss over their own part in the brutality. Wake up and smell the cornbread, lady.

As someone who has toured southern plantations the history of them IS about slaves so why is she suprised they talked about it? That's not all they talk about during tours, but it is definitely a very important part of it and it needs to be said.

It's a Southern plantation. What else do you think was going on there that would be noteworthy?

Since I read 'The 1619 Project' I have stopped using the word plantation and call them slave camps or slave farms. (& btw- their ancestors most definitely owned slaves, if not African ones. But every person, including myself, in the US still enjoys the immorally gained advantages of that forced labor. Not anything I can do will change that but refusing to teach or learn about it does nothing to prevent it from happening again).

I am sure this was the Whitney Plantation. I visited before my last cruise. I am not sure how you can plan to visit there are not know what it's about. That's like visiting the Holocaust museum in DC and complaining it made you feel guilty about the Jewish genocide in Europe.

Yeah that's a little messed up... Although I do sometimes feel uncomfortable with the historical slavery, it's better to try and turn that into passion and love rather then guilt and hatred

This isn’t going to be a popular comment but perhaps the OP has a point that has been very badly made. If you visit a plantation you do want to hear about its history, which INCLUDES considerable commentary about slavery but does not consist solely of it. I would also like to learn, for example, the crops grown and why; about living areas for residents, servants and slaves (noting the considerable differences); whether it is known what some of the slaves did after freedom granted; and so on.

Frankly, they don't give a darn.

Whenever you have to point out "I am not racist and never owned slaves", you are a racist.

It's one thing to teach the history about slavery it's another thing to be lectured and bashed which is what this person described about their experience.
