“An Entitled Mother Insists That I ‘Share’ My Nintendo Switch With Her Child On My Flight”

We all get it – moms always want what’s best for their kids. But there has to be a line somewhere, especially if the kid wants something that’s not theirs. Like, this Nintendo that Redditor Artlanta brought on a Southwest airline flight.

“I was sitting in a window seat next to two lovely women, and directly horizontal from us was an empty seat, a mom, and her son,” the Redditor wrote in her post on the Entitled Parents subreddit. It was not long before that mother unbuckled while the plane was taking off and moved closer to the author.

“Sorrrry,” Atlanta wrote, “I just wanted to know if there was any way that my son could use that game for a little while.” Understandably, the author did not feel comfortable with sharing her Nintendo with the kid she didn’t know, and more so, she brought it for herself.

That’s when the real scene began and it was clear that the mother was just not taking ‘no’ for an answer.

Bored Panda reached out to Artlanta, the author of this story, who said that she has flown a lot in her life, but this was the first and only time she had actually encountered someone that acted like this. “I’m really thankful that the people around me agreed that this mother was stepping out of line. My situation would’ve been so different if the people around me wouldn’t have cared to speak up for me.”

Artlanta said that “so many people fly in one day… so many different kinds of people get on one plane. You never know who you’re going to end up sitting next to, it really is a gamble. I think my story is one of those horror stories.” She added that no one wants to have to encounter someone like this. “I think that’s why so many people were interested in my story, because arguing with a stranger on your flight is often the worst-case scenario for travelers like me.”

According to the author, the incident initially ended when one of the women in her row tried talking this entitled mother down with logic. “It’s no one’s responsibility to take care of YOUR children but YOU. At the end of the flight when the mother felt the need to make that snide comment, it actually made me laugh pretty hard to myself. I knew that mother felt defeated or she wouldn’t have said something so nasty before she walked away.”

The author also added that she didn’t have a problem with the “entitled” woman initially asking her if her son could borrow her Switch. “I understand that completely… but when I said no, that should’ve been the end of the conversation. Her child could’ve learned a lesson somewhere in that interaction, but instead, it became an uncomfortable moment in my flight that I’ll likely never forget,” she concluded.

Bored Panda also reached out to Lynn How, the experienced educator and author of “Positive Young Minds” who specializes in supporting parents, teachers, and children navigating through mental health issues and prevention, who shared her point of view of this whole situation.

“I’m really glad the woman stood her ground and did not share what was hers. Although in many instances, it is kind to share, there is a line that can be crossed,” How said.

“Even with my own children, I do not insist that they share items that are important to them or if I think their things would not be looked after. I would certainly not have the audacity to ask someone else on a flight to borrow something for my children because I had not managed to plan ahead and take my own,” How commented.

Most passengers on planes, if they were asked, would not choose a seat next to a family with babies or children. This doesn’t mean they hate kids, per se, but flying is already a daunting task, being cramped up in a claustrophobic place, already tired from the commute to the airport and security checks. A hyperactive kid next to them may take the last drop of the patience they have.

Some parents are aware of that fact and even purchase a round of drinks for neighboring passengers or pass out ear plugs to drown out any child-induced noisiness. Having said that, the best thing parents can do when on board with children is being prepared.

That includes removing the child’s shoes to prevent them from kicking fellow passengers, giving them toys and games to keep them busy, and handing out some snacks for ‘emergency purposes.’ Like throwing a tantrum for that overpriced chocolate bar a neighbor seat passenger is having.

Many people showed their support for the author in the comments

In situations like these it's best not to "give reasons". A simple "No. Thank you." and not responding beyond that works best. Starting with reasons why somehow triggers these people into thinking they have a chance.

A tantrum brought on by the mother egging it on, and how she addressed the refusal to him. If she had just said, "sorry, sweetie, she said no, so you'll just have to play pretend for a little while" (a two hour flight really isn't long), maybe the child would have responded better, but seeing mommy lose control made him think that's what he needed to do to get his way. I feel sorry for that baby's future. 😣

Bravo to the other passengers who chimed in. Lady, this is a $400 piece of equipment plus a $60 game plus whatever other accessories. I’m not trusting it with anyone. The airport shops have games and activities for your child. And if nothing else ask the flight attendant if that have any coloring books or something else to occupy your kid. No. Thank. You.

This! The flight attendants are trained for these situations. They have the little packs of crayons, and mini coloring books. Sometimes they even have little toys. I was 4 (on my only flight ever), and the stewardesses took me up front to see the cockpit, gave me packs of mints, nuts, and candy, and my own (plastic) set of "Pilot's Wings" for my shirt. A very fun memory for me, even as an adult. This mom not only had the wrong attitude, but asked the wrong person for "assistance".

Is the mum of the kid so dumb to not think of taking some form of entertainment for her child on a 2 hours flight? Because if I get a whatever journey with my kid that lasts more than 20 minutes, I usually bring with me at least 3 or four of them...

The poor child. If you need to fly with a small one, prepare for flying with a small one. If you did not, do not blame others for your mistake. If you genuinely need help despite preparing, honestly and openly ask for help. In a nutshell: be kind to your children and other people. (Which also is a much more important lesson to the child than sharing with strangers.)

She can ask but you can refuse. Some people think that if they ask nicely they can get what they want. They seem to forget though that people have the right to refuse to give their time/thing/assistance/whatever even if they're rude about it. And this is coming from a person that cannot say no unfortunately.

The mother certainly set a good example for her child on how to handle being told "No". Seriously, does she prepare her kid for travel by thinking, "I don't have to occupy my kid, I'll shame a stranger into helping"? And "God's word"? Is her kid secretly a deity or is she one?

I know, right? Why is it worded like a badly written narrative? Like, if this happened, why not stick to the facts (this lady seriously asked me if I would lend my Switch to her kid) as opposed to, "she began, clearly sounding agitated....' this is a creative writing exercise, and a bad one at that. So many adverbs.

This woman is seriously putting words in God's mouth? That goes against the 2nd commandment, Thou shoult not take God's name in vain. The Bible does say however that he who does not teach their child HATES them. This is literally what King Salomon says in Proverbs: if you don't teach your child you HATE them. This woman is sinning gravely in so many ways yet she accuses others of. So typical.

There is ONLY one way to deal with entitled people while royally pissing them off. Take a cue from those old drug commercials. JUST SAY NO. Say nothing but NO. Do NOT answer questions as entitled people are NOT entitled to an explanation. The most extra you might say is "NO MEANS NO". If repeated NOs don't get them out of your face then go with FK NO and FK OFF #karen. I don't know who needs to hear this but when it comes to questions asked of you, NO is a complete answer. There is absolutely never a situation where NO requires explaining. Edit add-on from childhood. Me: Mom can I have XYZ? Mom: NO. Me: Why not? Mom: Because I said so...

That's like one of the first things you think about "did I prep enough stuff to minimize the chances of my child being a brat" . What was she gonna do if that person didn't have a game? A two-hour-flight sounds like peanuts compared to the 14 hours it took us to get to Sri Lanka two decades ago. We always had some entertainment with us: music, a book, a gaming device (or crossword puzzles in my case)... It's not hard. Provide your kid with your own entertainment equipment or remind them to pack something for that exact purpose. I would NEVER give my Switch to a kid because I don't trust any of them...

What a hell of a mom 😠 You know you going to be on a flight for 2 hours. Common sense to bring your child his own switch, table, coloring books, toys, or whatever keeps him entertained with. As far as an adult not sharing with a child. Even adults like playing video games. Nothing wrong with that. She definitely DID NOT have to share with nobody. Her personal property. Happy she stayed calm and did not share. Him having a fit, she should have whooped his butt. Just by reading the article. You can tell, if he doesn't get what he wants, he throws a fit and the mom probably always get him what he wants. The young lady didn't cause his fit. She did,by way she raising him.

My 7yo doesn't share her switch, her camera, and anything else the 5yo would destroy. My 5 yr old has things he doesn't share. I have things I don't share.... they also are taught that NO is an acceptable answer and while negotiating is OK, coercion and begging are NOT. I loaded up her backpack with cheap toys, activity and coloring books, and even got her a little $5 music player and some headphones so she wouldn't bother people. She [nor I] would EVER think to beg someone for their property or get mad when they said no. Matter of fact she kept offering the people [adults] next to us pages from her coloring books and crayons, and even offered to share her music with the guy next to us on the flight down there. There was zero screaming crying meltdowns, or even an argument - because I kept her entertained as a parent should.

I was on a non-stop from LAX to Boston, window seat. Mom sat her 4 year old next to me. He had zero toys, books, snacks. Nothing. He slept for about 20 minutes of the entire flight. He was upside down on the seat, under the seat, under my seat, feet everywhere including on me, out in the aisle when they were coming through with the food carts. The flight attendants were losing patience with her because those carts could crush him. I wished I had had anything to entertain him. I would not have shared electronics with him though. I still feel bad for that poor kid. What a mindless parent.

The worst people in the world are invariably religious. Reason #352 why religion should be abolished. People would have to be accountable for their awfulness.

Oh please. You seriously think she's a Christian? People toss biblical verses around like candy who have NEVER read the Bible. Like those who say "who are you to judge". Has anybody ever read the entire chapter? Or even the sentence after that? Don't blame other people's beliefs on moron to have no belief. And just want to use the Bible to their own advantage.

I would have said it's important for children to learn the meaning of the word "no" early on. That woman is unreal. If you failed to plan for your child's boredom on a 2 hour flight, play Hangman or tic tac toe or the dots game... Requires a pen and a napkin. Practice spelling or play the ABC game where you pick a category and go back and forth thinking up animals or foods or whatever that begin with "A" then "B"then "C", etc.

My wife used to be a frequent flyer at her last job. She can't count the number of times a mother and toddler would be in the seats next to her on a plane. Mom wanted to nap, Kid was bored silly, and somehow both Mom and Kid thought that my wife should entertain Kid so that Mom could take a nap. My wife always told them, in no uncertain terms, that it wasn't her job to watch a stranger's kid so that the stranger could take a nap. There were also a couple of times where my wife downloaded something to watch that wasn't exactly kid-friendly, then Mamabear threw a hissyfit "because my sweet innocent angel saw what you were watching!" "Yeah, and? Whose fault is that?!"

You have an encountered it because it rarely ever happens. From reading these comments this is a completely made up story. But I have not ever encountered anything like this either. Usually the only thing I encounter is the fact that the kids playing the games are too loud. Because they forgot their headphones.

When i was 10, i was running a "weapon shop"(really a bunch of sticks in varying sizes) and was taking "payment"(pinecones) from my friends. one was sitting on like a foot thick tree branch and a Karen pulls up and yells "Boy!" i turn around. "Boy! with the sticks! Get your butt off that branch, it'll break and the tree will get hurt!" my friend farts(hes nown for farting) and she yells at me, "dont you ever do that again, you young jerk! may all your dreams be destroyed!" I step away from my "counter"(a flat rock) and pick up a long stick. she yells "you do anything to me or my car, and ill put your butt in juvie forever!" she drives away. never told anyone about this.

I have a story to tell I've been in this situation before on a JetBlue plane The captain pilot allowed people to unbuckle their seatbelt and then I took out my Nintendo switch put on my headphones and then I started playing Doom eternal all of a sudden a young mom comes over to my seat asking me to share my switch with her son He is bored can he borrow your switch for a little bit I told her that's not my problem bring your own devices to keep your child entertained I don't share devices with strangers she was not taking no for an answer she kept making me look like I was a bad person she literally said did your parents ever teach you how to share with others I promise he won't destroy your switch I told her My parents told me not to share My devices with strangers and that's exactly what I'm going to do Don't you have a smartphone to keep your child entertained? She got even more mad she said oh my God how can you be this ignorant I hope you rot in hell she left back to her seat.

It's either these stories are really fluffed up or people are really that polite like the OP. I seem to experience more of the latter tbh, not too unlike the entitled mother here. If some rando were to ask me like that, it would simply be a firm no. I know I'm not a nice person so once it gets less civilized, a "f*ck off" would be joining the convo pretty soon.

I like to keep my things nice so if it's broken it's MY FAULT. I don't feel comfortable lending things because I know how I am about this. She shouldn't have to explain this to ANYONE let alone a grown woman why she won't share. She did the right thing standing her ground. I’ve thrown a toddler friendly movie on my IPad to distract a curious kid sitting near me occasionally and the parents always seemed grateful to be seated next to someone who didn’t obviously hate traveling near their kid. Most parents have the sense to tell their kid to thank you after a couple minutes and then distract them with their own activities prepared for the trip. I’ve traveled solo with a toddler and it’s not always fun, so I sympathize, but I would never just hand my device to a kid or be polite to anyone who tried to shame me into giving into her child’s tantrum. Flight attendants can usually find a colouring book and crayons for dumb moms who didn’t prepare in advance. Sounds like Mom and son BOTH need to learn that no means no!

Of course the indoctrination of her likely god fearing upbringing has left her unable to mentally process her self righteous and audacious behavior. That final line from her, so gross, classic zealot nonsense to impart some power or control over others. It also didn't seem like it would have just been for "a couple of minutes" since the concern was for how long the flight was. She likely intended to let her kid use it the whole time. I WISH I had been there. I'm so glad another passenger interviened. That's what it takes to shut down awful people, others willing to not let it fly.

Being polite and respectful only shows then that they can get away with that kind of behavior. They need to be scared for their lives to act this way towards strangers.

An 8 year old can’t share something that does not belong to him. Good for this woman for standing her ground. She is in no way obligated to let a stranger entitled brat use her personal property. That is not going against God’s word. The entitled mother should have brought something to keep her child busy. Not depend or expect free child care during a flight from strangers.

As mentioned in one of the original comments, above, "No" is a complete sentence. Every time you explain why you're saying no, you're giving the one who is asking you to do something information they can use to try and get you to change your mind. Just "No". Not "I'm sorry, but no" or "No, because....". And you repeat "No" if they continue to ask and/or give reasons why you should change your answer. Eventually, they will give up and they'll give up sooner rather than later as long as you continue not to give them anything more to work with than just "No". The problem is that we think just saying "No" is rude. But we need to remind ourselves the person who is rude is the one who is asking for something from us they're not entitled to and are refusing to take no for an answer!

She probably wasn't going to get the Switch back. When I was twelve a woman pressured me into "lending" my skateboard to her son for a day. When I went to pick it up the mom flat out denied that her son had ever borrowed the skateboard and claimed that by lending it out I was really giving it away. It's simple, the game was the girls property and that's this mother needed to respect. I'm a little surprised how this mother was this unprepared for their flight... Not that it's weird for parents to sometimes forget to pack that extra snack or toy, but as most parents probably could tell you.. you make that mistake once or twice haha to start acting disrespect and pointing towards other people just because you lack the insight to raise your child right, that's just sad... The boy is 8y old for crying out loud... You'd think she'd at least had enough experience as a mom to lead by example when your not prepared. It's not just sad... It's bad parenting.

If she gave in and gave the Switch to the woman for the child to play with "for just a few minutes", when time wS up, he would not have wanted to give it up. So Mom would have expected this kindhearted woman to just give up her property so this little becoming entitled child would be appeased. No, the OP was right to say "No". Why tf would she apologize especially "I'm sorry"? That lady knew to target her because she definitely looks like a pushover/weak person and she was right when other women had to stand up for her. It's very simple; if a person is a POS like that poor excuse for a mother; look at them and don't respond and make them look like a jackass or a firm "No" This idiot is there explaining and justifying why she doesn't want to give her property to that pos. It's amazing she should've given her SSN at that point LOL

Sometimes I feel like this c**p is done on purpose, like the whole God part at the end. Nowhere does it say you have to share your personal belongings with a random child, but it does say respect your neighbor. People are dumb it's a 2 hour flight the kid can survive, I just sent mine on a 6 hour flight told her she could sleep when she learned no wifi access

Poor kid has a un thought full mom, and is on a hour and half flight with a crazy Nazi gamer as well. The kids the one I feel bad for the not the two adults acting like children. What gets me is the author has a undiserved sense of righteousness about the decision. End of the story is, it's a kids toy, kids are more likely agitated on flights. I'm reading and thinking who the heck would act this way let a lone write an article about being an a*****e.

It was wrong for the mom to be so pushy. I think that is what is triggering people. However, it's also wrong to sit infront of a child for 2 hours enjoying a video game while they sit there with envy that they have not learned to cope with yet. It's a shame that society has devolved to the level where sharing, kindness, and compassion for children can no longer be expected.

Sure...Do you know what would`ve happen if you slapped her? She would press assault charges and the crew would be forced to contact the police at the end destination in order to arrest you on arrival, or the captain could make an unscheduled stop at the closest airport in order to kick you off the plane and hand you over to the police before putting you on the no flight list and sticking you with the bill of several thousand dollars for triggering an emergency landing. To sum it up, you would get kicked off the plane with several police charges against you while she would still be on the plane laughing at you getting dragged away by the police. I bet you wrote this comment thinking "omg, im going to sound like such a cool badass right now!", but in reality you just sound like a immature little child that doesn`t know how to resolve minor disputes without resorting to violence and somehow thinks being violent makes you sound cool, when in reality it just makes you sound dumb.

By the time my daughter was 2 years old, she had flown back and forth over the Atlantic Ocean 7 times, and I always made sure to pack plenty of diaper bags, and then some, just so she wouldn't run out of anything, and when she was a toddler, there were separate bags for toys, coloring books, crayons, etc..., because even a 30 minute flight can seem like forever to a child. My daughter was so well behaved, that they didn't care how many bags we had for her, and the flight attendants use to walk with her if they could, and take her to see the captain, and she always got a bag filled with more stuff for children from the airlines, and her little wings. If that mother had just planned, or even stopped at a bookstore, and gotten her child something from there, she could have avoided what happened. She could have asked a flight attendant too, if they had anything for children to do, because I know when I flew with my daughter they did.

This woman is seriously putting words in God's mouth? That goes against the 2nd commandment, Thou shoult not take God's name in vain. The Bible does say however that he who does not teach their child HATES them. This is literally what King Salomon says in Proverbs: if you don't teach your child you HATE them.

The "ThIS DiDn`t HaPpEn" crowd in this comment section seriously has to start going outside of their basement every once in a while if they think this is an unlikely story. There are literally thousands of videos on the internet of entitled Karens losing their sh*t on an airplane and getting dragged out while everyone else on the plane claps, but somehow this minor dialogue is "UnLiKeLy AnD FaKe". I could literally watch a youtube video right now of a Karen hitting other passengers and write about it on boredpanda, and for sure there would be a bunch of basement dwellers going "ThIS DiDnT HaPpeN!! PeOpLe DonT JuSt StArT HItTiNG pEoPle lIke ThAT!!

EM: Because he has nothing to play with. OP: Why? Because you didn't bring him anything? EM: I didn't think of it. OP: Why? EM: Never mind. OP: Why? If I were the OP I would have "Why-d" her so much that she would have moved seats to get away from me, lol!!

Um, no. Just no. I have a 7 yr old and 5 year old and they don't even have to share with each other. I tell them there are things we share, and things we don't. My 7yo doesn't share her switch, her camera, and anything else the 5yo would destroy. My 5 yr old has things he doesn't share. I have things I don't share.... they also are taught that NO is an acceptable answer and while negotiating is OK, coercion and begging are NOT. If you ask twice, nicely, and the answer is still no, then NO IS THE ANSWER.

It's your kid. YOU plan for his entertainment. Glad you gave her privileged a*s a metaphorical KICK. lol

How to be a Narcissist. 1. Demand something that isn’t yours, because you feel entitled. 2. Blame other people for your shortcomings, or failures. 3. Use passive aggressive techniques to make the other party feel guilty. 4. Use manipulation to gain control. 5. If all else fails throw a temper tantrum.

Hell no!! I took my [then] 4 year old daughter on a 5 hour flight and she was just fine.

Karenesis 1: thou shalt not be selfish and buy YOUR child their own games and toys. How dare you get on an airplane harassing anyone because you are to selfish to buy YOUR child their own toys or games for a two hour flight. I would have called the stewardess and said I am being harassed and I don’t feel comfortable. I am glad the lady beside her said something to Karen.

I don't have a Nintendo switch, but I do have a phone that has a lot of videos downloaded for my little brothers. I would let the kid sit next to me while he played on my phone and watched videos. I feel bad for the kid because he didn't have anything to keep him occupied for 2 hours. My brothers kick and scream wanting a phone if we are in the car for more than 5 minutes. The person has every right to keep their belongings because that is theirs.

"Boy! with the sticks!

I said to him: “Uhh my phone has my contact info and private stuff so no”. He said some words I am decent enough not to repeat in responce

Damn, expecting a stranger to just hand over their Nintendo Switch like that, I always bring my laptop, switch, and usually my iPad too (along with a random one of my plushies lol). I havent ever bee on a plane by myself, i have always traveled with my mom and dad, so i dont think this would be an issue.

She probably wasn't going to get the Switch back. When I was twelve a woman pressured me into "lending" my skateboard to her son for a day. When I went to pick it up the mom flat out denied that her son had ever borrowed the skateboard and claimed that by lending it out I was really giving it away. That was the first time I learned that there are some truly awful parents out there.

And, as the Bible does say, "Let your No mean no."

I'm pretty sure anything that doesn't use cellular can be played on flight, they just have to be off during takeoff and landing. It's also been a while since I have been on a plane but I remember playing with my gameboy on a plan a few years ago.
