Acting like an entitled, spoiled brat won’t win you any favors and won’t make you any new friends. In fact, you’re bound to lose a few if you don’t tone it down and continue making other people’s lives a living hell.

To you and I, these people are simply huge jerks who are best left ignored. But to the internet, they’re known as ‘Karens,’ no matter their actual gender or real name. Shaming ignorant Karens has become so huge, it’s even spawned its own subreddit, the ‘Eff You Karen’ community that shows everyone how not to act if you want to be a good person.

In the mood for some more examples of unearned entitlement and outrage? Once you’re done upvoting the pics that made your jaw drop in this list, check out Bored Panda’s previous article about the ‘Eff You Karen’ community right over here.

The ‘Eff You Karen’ subreddit, founded in late 2017, is now homing in on the 1.2-million-member mark. Some of the subreddit’s rules include avoiding political topics, avoiding witch hunts, and censoring social media identities in order to protect the people being poked fun at.

They might be in the wrong and be way too entitled, but there are very few people who actually deserve being spammed by a bunch of angry internet users. Everyone makes mistakes and we need to leave enough room for people to grow and become better. Though, of course, that’s not an excuse for acting like a horrible, entitled person in the first place.

In a previous interview, I spoke about Karen memes and the context surrounding them with Matt Schimkowitz, Know Your Meme’s Senior Editor. According to him, there’s lots of potential for the meme to be insensitive and even offensive to women, so care must be taken when using this type of humor. He put it very plainly that we should all meme with caution, whatever the meme might be.

“I think that users of the meme should be cognizant that what they're meme-ing might not be their intent anymore. It's very possible that the meme could grow even farther to exhibit misogynistic tendencies, which are somewhat already present,” Matt warned those who use Karen memes to be aware of the context.

Seriously, why does The US have these HOAs? why woudl anyone move into a house that others in the neighborhood were in control of and if you don't comply, they fine and harass you until you move or comply. Blows my mind that in the land of the "free" you can't even put something on your lawn in some places because the HOA will be after you in some way. "Free" to comply... Absolute madness.

Sorry this happened to you all. I had the same thing happen. My daughters made a Happy Ribbon Tree, where people passing by could tie a ribbon and make a wish. People also left small trinkets and made nests and fairy houses and kids enjoyed visiting. We also made a rope swing nearby. The rope was cut every time we returned and the tree was repeatedly smashed up and destroyed, and we were eventually told by the council to clear it away because people were complaining because they walked through the forest to enjoy nature, not to see that. It confuses me the way some people behave.

yes, they do. And the level of power can be set by the area you live in...so the powers vary widely. As do the usefulness. And HOA can be SUPER necessary when you own property in a small building, and work needs to be done and costs need to be distributed amongst the owners of the building. But for single family homes in neighborhoods, far more often, it's about power and control. At least, in my experience.

HOA can be evil, but I once had a true outdoor hoarder as a neighbor. All his junk cars and crap was home to rats and raccoons. I’d take the HOA over the rat farm any day. But complaints over a kids tree fort is too picky.

Naw, not normal steel-nails or iron. Copper - yes, that's dangerous, but that's also not the usual material to make a nail out of. There's tons of trees in the world that are littered with old bullets and shrapnel from warfare. They are only a danger to the sawmills.

This really strikes a nerve. I LOVED building treeforts in the green belt as a kid. Just last summer I was visiting home with my own kids and building some new memories in those trees when some dude across the way comes over to yell at us for "killing the trees". I got the pleasure of explaining to him how it didn't hurt them 20 years ago and it wasn't going to hurt them now.

Accountability!!! This is what you have signed up For when you purchased a home in a neighborhood with hoa board. Don’t blame your neighbor for your decision. If neighbor had/has a teenage son and they wanted to rebuild an incomplete/junk car in his driveway they’d certainly have rules against this too. Hell you’re not allowed to build a fence unless it’s approved. Guess the idea is to keep every “Bob the builder” from throwing crap together and creating eyesores. Riding bikes in the street is obstructing traffic It’s illegal to ride bikes on sidewalks No public land without rangers wardens or police waiting to make your life miserable Not to mention Cameras everywhere Bet your wife is a Karen and you don’t even realize it. Should have made it sound a little more passive aggressive, like this: "Dear anonymous passerby, Don't worry, you're safe now! Your act of casual cruelty was successful! The complaint you lodged with the HOA has been heard and acted upon. They had me take the small treefort that I spent a lot of hard work and time on with my sons during the pandemic on this location. No longer will its mere presence offend you or your walk past my house and property. Please enjoy your stroll, now free from the sound of my children's play, laughter, and happiness. They are safely back inside now, watching television and playing video games I'm sure. Enjoy the unobstructed view of my backyard and my house. I will try to keep all of my property up to your standards just to please you. You friend with the now clear backyard, Dave" :>

At the core of using memes for humor lies intent. Know Your Meme’s Senior Editor Matt pointed out that the Karen meme, something that’s used and enjoyed by many people, could eventually become connected to something that many would find offensive if people with sexist beliefs started using the term as a “catchall for all women.”

Though we can’t expect memes to be completely neutral. “Meme-ing can be nihilistic artform and rewards really ugly behavior in some cases. Sometimes, what starts as a fairly inoffensive meme can grow into something really hateful, like Pepe the Frog. According to Matt, it’s hard to find the exact origin of the Karen meme. However, he personally believes that the most convincing origin story is a bit from Dane Cook's 2005 comedy special , "The Friend That Nobody Likes" where Karen is given this title. "This is one of the earliest examples that we have to using a specific name to stand in for a whole type of person, and it's a comedic trope that we've seen dozens of times over the last 15 years," Matt explained the possible origins of the meme to Bored Panda.
