‘Chipotle’ Sign Saying Staff ‘Walked Out’ Goes Viral (Plus 22 More Similar Signs From Other US Businesses)
The pandemic is not only affecting global public health but also causing chaos for the economy, disrupting supply chains and causing labor shortages for businesses around the world.
Economists say that not only changing demographics like aging and retiring employees are a factor behind the shortages, but also border controls, immigration limits, and demands for better pay and flexible working arrangements.
The latest labor data from the United States, for example, shows that the number of people who are willing to walk away from their jobs or to switch employment is growing. A U.S. Labor Department's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, released in October, showed there were 10.4 million job openings in August whereas the number of people leaving their jobs (the so-called "quits rate") rose to 4.3 million, the highest level seen on records dating back to December 2000. And it's showing.
On Monday, a Chipotle location in Kentucky was forced to temporarily close its doors after half of its staff walked out on the job

A video showing the simple sign the employees left went viral on TikTok in the hours following the mass resignation, and local Kentucky reporter Doug Proffitt also posted a picture of it on his Facebook, adding a statement from Chipotle itself.
The location's general manager, Raven Whallen, provided this explanation when reached by the Louisville Eccentric Observer: a series of unexpected staff resignations forced the Chipotle location to temporarily close its doors on Monday, but that didn't prevent it from reopening Tuesday morning. Apparently, the restaurant lost three employees on Monday. One had already put in her two-week notice but decided to leave her position early. Another was too frightened to return to work after discovering that her car's catalytic converter was stolen and her tires slit. A manager also left their position, leaving the store acutely understaffed.
But Chipotle, like many restaurants and fast-food locations across the US, has been struggling to maintain its employee count. The ongoing pandemic, paired with difficult customers, unsympathetic corporate management, and low pay, make these positions difficult to sell, even for the industry's typically young workers. As noted by Whallen, "A lot of people don't want to work nights, and if they do, they’re underage. So, it's kind of hard because they all have to be off at a certain time. We have to follow the labor laws."
In a similar case, one Dunkin' Donuts worker put his pay stub on blast, saying he doesn’t get paid enough for the misery he goes through

TikToker @scorchedearthcorey blasted Dunkin' Donuts for not compensating their employees enough. "I just want you to look at this because, for some reason, some people think that other people are there to entertain them," he said in his viral clip."This is my main source of income, to pay child support ... Do you think with my 73 hours of f****** misery and bulls***, that you should come and try to bother me more? People think customer service is end-all-be-all. Let me explain something to you: I do not get paid enough to listen to you. I do not get paid enough to take your B.S. I do not get paid enough for you to treat me like I'm your entertainment."
People think the ordeal at the Kentucky Chipotle is a sign of a larger problem
And they're right, similar signs have been popping up all over the United States

No One Wants To Work
I guess no one is wasting this employer's time by helping him make a living. He must not want to do what it takes to get ahead, the lazy bum.
No CEO should earn more than 10x their lowest paid employee. It is the employees who keep the company open and rolling, and they should all be compensated fairly. No, don't raise the prices to pay them more- cut the top salaries and use that money to pay them more.
You mean, the way it used to be? Funny how the worst offenders are always reminiscing about, and want to return to, the “good old days”, but want to cherry-pick which parts they want to come back.
Ah yes, the "good old days". Only if you were a white middle class male.
I would upvote this a hundred times.
I can't speak about larger corporations but I can say that as small business owner this is crushing and not true at all. If I completely cut my salary to $0 (btw I work hard 60+ hrs a wk) everyone in my company of 60 ppl would get a whopping... $70 more per month before taxes. 90% of all revenue in our company goes to wages or wage expenses already. We offer benefits as much as we can for a small company and have always worked hard to create as positive a work environment as possible. We invest in education for staff, care about our people as individuals and want everyone to succeed. The only way to meet higher salary IS to raise prices.. and the rate of wage increases is moving faster than customers want to pay. OR to have much higher volume- which is impossible without the staff available to work. We don't have large cash reserves to absorb the ever increasing losses to meet higher wages while building to a sustainable volume. Struggling employers aren't all greedy asses.
People think the Gov handout of $2800 was the only inducement offered. When people went on unemployment it was usually higher than anything they made in wages. THAT'S why people do not want to work. Why should they when Our Gov will give you hand-outs. And that was the Gov plan all along. Make the populous dependent on the Gov, and Socialism will take hold. THEN people will realize how "unequal" things can get. The 10% will still be there - and they'll be called the GOV.
1. Companies are WAAAAAAAY bigger than they used to be. 2.(kinda similar to 1) companies are now GLOBAL. they're not just getting/squeezing money from the local marker but from foreign ones as well.
THANK YOU!
Oh it's way more than 10 times. The Chipotle CEO made over 1700 times what the average worker makes from bonuses alone this year.
And that CEO has worked his whole life to get to that level, still probably works over 60 hours a week and probably has 0 life outside of chipotle. Yea I think he deserves at least 10x more than the uneducated ex convict making my burrito bowl.
Because someone is a ex convict doesn't mean we are better than him he make a mistake and pay for it and you say that people that goes to school shoul get pay more but why first no everyone have the comfort of having a mom a dad that will pay for collage and if we decide to go we will have to pay over 90k just to graduate so we will have to pay 90k our hole life for what because employer always hire the person with the most experienced so how are you supposed to get experience if no one hire you. And the worker that do the hard work in a company are the ones who make the company millions so why we should get compensate fairly
He could always quit his job if he does not like the working conditions.
You know, àssholes like you, who look down their noses at fast food workers, are part of why so many workers are quitting. Why should we put up with being treated like shít by not only our companies, but people like you, for slave wages? Just because someone works in fast food doesn't mean they're uneducated. I went to college for two years. But I decided I'd rather not be saddled with a lifetime of debt, for a degree that probably won't get me paid much better than McDonald's. I'm not a convict. But I know a lot of people who are. And they're good people, who deserve a second chance. Just like we all do. I bust my ass, full-time. So do they. And all so we can be looked at like pieces of shít, by people like you? I'm just saying. Less judgement. More empathy. Try it. You'll be a happier person. You might even make some friends.

Yes they should, they are more educated and have completely outworked that bottom employee every day of their lives, nothing deserves to be handed out these people are working these jobs because that's all they are qualified for, whose fault is that?
Couldn't agree more. Chief Officer annual compensation packages are obscene. Seems in the world of the wealthy, even TOO MUCH is not enough. They will certainly not reduce their own salaries voluntarily, but government intervention will immediately be decried as socialism. Anyone got any good ideas? We need a solution fast before the 2022 executive pay raises take effect.
Unfortunately this never happens.
Personally, I think that the constant and aggressive pursuit of wealth, status, and associated assets should be classified as a psychological disorder.

Yes! I have no skin in the game, but I've been following these types of news from the US with growing optimism. Seems like now's the time to make the real changes.
Im so sick of "save the restaurants". Really? How about treat your daycare teachers living wages since theyve been working taking care of your babies every day from day 1 of pandemic so everybody else can work. Weve been so underworked and underpaid with no respect for years. Christmas time while parents are off work shopping were still watching your kids. They might get you a gift of a nail polish for your troubles. Wow thanks! Preshcool teachers have college degrees and have always been paid around $14 an hour. Dont care about f### ing restaurants. Cook at home!
Amazing. It’s rife. Us work culture needs a total overhaul. Even my relatively chill boss needs to be reminded that I’m not staying after my paid time and they can’t keep leaving extra things for me to do. She’s just so used to not thinking about it.
Not just the US sadly. I left my job after 12 years because Headoffice decided to reduse costs by reducing personel. Why pay 3 workers when you can make 1 worker run the whole shop, 9 hour shift, no break, easy right? Now the shop is only open a couple hours a day because most of the remaining staff quit
That's what I've been wondering. How many businesses are claiming they can't hire more people but using it as an excuse to pay only half staff to do all the work? One guy did an experiment applying to all jobs who claimed they were desperate for work and only a small percentage even called him for an interview.
Lots of them are using this excuse. My daughter tried to work at her service job during the pandemic. This restaurant had 3 locations, so to reduce benefits and keep workers' status as part time they simply made up the schedules to make employees work a few hours at each location. As each location was a separate business none of the employees qualified for any benefits to which a full time worker is entitled. At the same time the businesses are claiming benefits that were supplied by the government to subsidize workers wages during reduced pandemic caused business income. She used the time to retrain and will never go back to the service industry.
I am a cook in a nursing home. We have 136 residents. I work morning shift, which means I cook breakfast and lunch....by myself. Wash my own dishes, prepare all the food, serve the food, and clean. I have to bring some residents extra things they might want all around a 3 floor facility. I get reprimanded for not taking my breaks, but I really can't sit for half hour when im doing all this by myself. We have dietary aids, but Goodluck if you have 3 that show up on the same day. If the state could allocate a bit more of a budget we could have 2 cooks, but why when they can pay 1 person to do it. I would find another job, but I like the residents.
