Having a boss that cares about you is the best. Encouraging your personal and professional development, making you feel like a valuable member of the team, even saying a simple "thank you" really contributes to job satisfaction.
Sometimes, however, it feels like this boss doesn't even exist. Like they're just a fictional character, created by some business management faculty to trick students into joining the workforce.
Take this viral thread for example.
It started with a tweet by comedian Kevin McCaffrey. In it, McCaffrey recalled the time when he told his manager that his grandma had died before a double shift he was scheduled for. Their response? "Can you just work one shift?"
As the tweet blew up, people started replying with baffling phrases they heard from bosses themselves. Below are some of the most delirious ones.

Bored Panda got in touch with McCaffrey to learn more about the story behind his famous tweet. "I was a server in Anderson, Indiana for 4 months in 2003," he said. "Was I happy with it? No, haha, but I don't blame OG. It was a good server job in the area, the employees were very cool overall."
McCaffrey doesn't really remember what the real reason was that day, but he has a theory. "The TV department at Ball State's activity fair (called SuperParty) where people sign up for what shows they want to work on for the year. I was the host and EP of a late night talk show, and they wouldn't let me take the day off. I wasn't gonna miss it, so fake grandma had to have a bad day."
Hmmm .... she was happy to ignore the roaches up until the employer upset her. Not cool. Not cool at all.
The main thing McCaffrey took away from all the replies his tweet got was that "management, in every job, is delusional."
"They demand far more than they're willing to give almost everywhere, and expect people who are clearly working survival jobs to bail on everything in their lives to deliver unlimited salad and breadsticks for 2.13 an hour and an average of about 10% tip," he said. "I also learned that there are plenty of people very mad that I lied in 2003 at the Anderson Indiana Olive Garden and missed that shift."
A study by CareerBuilder.com shows that a whopping 58 percent of managers said they didn’t receive any management training. Let that sink it. Most managers in the workforce were promoted because they were good at what they did, not because they made the people around them better. This statistic might explain their lack of competence. Our leaders aren't trained to lead.
Here's another interesting fact for you. Leigh Branham, author of The 7 Hidden Reasons Employees Leave revealed that 89 percent of bosses believe employees quit because they want more money. I bet any boss would love this statistic to be true (because it basically pardons them from wrong-doing) but it is simply not true. Only 12 percent of employees actually leave an organization for more money.
I'm a bit perplexed that work would even have the right to know your Dr, let alone ring them on a whim.
A Harvard Business Review survey revealed that only 49% of full-time workers responded that they had "a great deal of trust" in those working above and alongside them.
That becomes a bigger problem when you consider their other research which has found that positive teams that trust each other are more productive, creative, and resilient and improve the organization’s overall effectiveness.

Had a boss who said to me, two days after my Dad's death, "What's wrong with you? You're not still upset over your father?". She was evil.
One winter, my brother died in a fire. Because of inclement weather, most family and friends were unable to travel. So the family had him cremated and planned a memorial service for later that year. When he died I took two days off because I couldn't bring myself to come into work. The following week, my boss rejected my time card because I had selected 2 days for "funeral" leave, which was the classification in the system. He said "You didn't actually go to a funeral." I said, "Why should that make any difference? HE STILL DIED." Nope. I had to use hard earned vacation time. Looking back, I should have claimed sick leave due to my mental state. Some years later the classification was changed to "bereavement" leave, due to the number of employees who were unable to travel for funerals. I should have demanded my two days of vacation to be restored.
On the flip side, I’ve worked with people who seemed to have an endless supply of grandparents who apparently kept rising from the dead and having to be reburied, funerals and all.
In my country, we get a day off by law, when close family dies. All these stories make me think about working laws and yes, I have to think about the USA...

I had some things happen at my last job where every single solitary person I spoke to had the same two responses: "That has to be illegal" and "You should sue him". I finally went to both a lawyer and the state dept. of labor and asked them what I could do. Their response? "It's an at-will state. You can quit." America treats its employees terribly. They have barely any rights that we have in the UK. When I was there I was shocked at how bad it is. Look at how they expect tips instead of a minimum living wage.
My junior year at college I worked part time as a teller at a bank. I found out my aunt was murdered and called a co-worker/friend because I wasn't comfortable telling anyone else. She called our supervisor for me; supervisor called me and said "you weren't really that close to her, were you?" It was like "bitch, I don't care if she was Satan's wife, she was my aunt. Let me go home to be with my family." I also had to make the rounds to my college professors to explain why I needed to be excused from class. One had the nerve to ask me "can I interview you for a research paper I'm doing?" Thankfully, the next professor I went to I had for 2 classes and he was extremely caring and told me to take as much time as I needed - thank you Dr. Moon, wherever you are.
I have a good boss and coworker story. I got into a really bad car accident recently and my manager drove out to the scene to see if I was okay and the guy she called in to replace me drove out to the scene to check on me as well. The doctor told me not to go back to work for three days and no one is upset about that.
After i had a miscarriage and had to have two operacions because of complications, my boss (knowing exactly what was happening) called me on the day of the second operation, that i should be back at work by now and that she doesnt see why it takes so long...

I was an assistant manager for Kmart some years back. I was constantly bullied by another assistant manager who was a male. The store manager had no backbone and would not stand up to the bully. It was so bad that I would have panic attacks prior to going into work. My hair was falling out from the stress as well. I would cry every day I had to work both while on my way into work and while I was there. It was so stressful. I needed the job as I was a single mom. I ended up calling the ethics board of Kmart and told them everything that had happened to me. 4 months later an opportunity to move opened up for me and I quit my job. I gave them a month's notice too. Nothing happened to the store manager or the bully until a year later when I found out that because of their actions and my reporting to the ethics board, I could collect unemployment even tho I quit. It was then that there was an investigation and both the store manager and the bully were fired on the spot! I danced that day.
Worked for a major phone company but not customer facing. Coworker gets call that his wife and 3 yo daughter have been in a car accident and are being transported to a hospital. He goes to his manager to explain what has happened and that he needs to leave,. Now. Manager informs him that there is no vacation time available so he'll have to take an "occurrence" (part of our horrible sick time policy). This was overheard by many. As was our coworker's "Do what you have to, I'm leaving". Manager wanted to discuss this further right then and there. Un-be-f##&&ng-lievable.
One year after I quit, my boss asked for my computer password so he could set it up for his son because having the IT guy wipe my account was a hassle. I also had to ask three times for them to send my W-2.

She said, in a meeting in front of all the staff that she wished she could get a heart condition so she could get some time off too.
I once worked in a catering company as a storekeeper (needed job badly) and somebody stole $5K worth of beef from company's fridge cons on the other side of our city where I didn't even had time to go to (they never gave me a truck either). So, when the boss also found out that I didn't sign any papers for that beef he told me to go away or they'd withhold those money from my salary. I left and got a very good job in an oil company. The next Xmas I met the former boss at the entrance of our office and he told me he had good news for me: you didn't steal that meat - we've found those bastards. I told him to get lost and not spoil my Xmas spirits.

The manager at the college joint hated me because I had helped train him at the other location and knew more about procedures, policies and public health regulations than he did. Several times I had to "remind" him the things he wanted me to do were against company policy or even illegal. He fired me on a trumped up charge. Then he lied to the state to keep me from getting unemployment.

Not me but my son's third grade teacher. We had the same bosses-were coworkers. Teachers were only given 10 days a year for sick leave. You could not take a personal day. They claimed you could but they only allowed 2 teachers per month. Out of a staff of over 75. Then my coworker came down with aggressive stage 4 brain cancer. She had to work to keep her insurance and once the 10 days were up she had no choice but to come in. She worked through chemo and radiation. She was on meds that made her head swell up huge. I have seldom been that angry over the way the admin treated her. I would have gladly given her some of my days. I understand the HR director was the one who made her stay and did nothing to help the situation. She went home one Friday after school and died over the weekend. The next year they started a sick leave bank for people to give some of their sick leave to others. Shortly all the admin just about had left due to terminal illness or retirement. Karma.
My mom worked with a lady she became friends with at our county high school district, and her friend would take work home with her at night with no appreciation from the higher ups. Over the past 10 years I've had to explain that to a number of excellent employers, particularly the most recent one. I had a boss dither about letting me go home when I had a bad stomach. I worked in a takeaway, and should not have been near food or other people. On the other side, I later had a boss who knew I was sick before I did. I started my day as normal, felt fine, shift was pretty busy so I didn't pay much attention to myself, or get lost in my thoughts like I did when it was quiet. During a lull, she mentioned that I looked tired and pale, but I insisted I was okay. It wasn't long after that when I realised I actually felt rotten, and had a pretty bad cold, so she sent me home. It all happened in less than an hour, and I was back home in bed by lunchtime.

Turns out I ended up setting the record at the hospital for the longest HIDA scan (test to see how long it takes for your gallbladder to empty). When my surgeon and I approached my boss (O.R. Director) to tell her I needed a day off for surgery, she actually asked if I "really" needed to have it removed. My surgeon was like, "Yeah, if you don't want it to rupture and her possibly die". Actually, i live in spain. And it's not much better. I used to work in a restaurant where with my 40 hour contract i worked up to 60 hours a week.and then on 24 hour contract up to 40 hours a week. Worked from time to time 1 month withouth having a day off. Being called on my vacation, that i finally got after 3 years, to order in products. Had to pay 1 euro for each dish i broke. Got yelled at when we had to stay half an hour more to clean up because there was too much to clean ( which btw is only 3 euros more). 4 out of 5 times got called to work on my day off. And i probably could keep going on, but that's what you have to endure when you need to pay bills on a crappy wage. The worst of it all is probably that you can't put in a complaint because where i live nearly all of them are the same, so if they know you put a complaint out on one it would get extremely hard to find a new job. And can't leave either because of the mortgage
These are disgusting and bring up my worst experiences. I worked at a clothing store and they scheduled shifts one week at a time and would let you know on Friday if you were working Saturday. They also liked to change around shifts without telling you. One such day I ended up going to shop at this store and my manager berated me while I was in the change room that I had missed my shift that day, even though when I checked the schedule 2 days ago it said I wasn't working.
That is what happens when society is run by Megalomaniac Narcissistic, sadistic psychopaths and there is zero regulation and protection for regular workers. Thus one ends up working for sadistic psychopaths who just love the feeling of power they get by destroying people around them.
And this is why I could never live in America. We have very strict workers rights. Also under 18 year old can have a summer job but it's very rare for them to work during the school year. And also we pay our servers/shop workers etc. a living wage.

I could not stand upright, I had to go to the bathroom every 10 minutes orso to have explosive everything coming from everywhere!!! I WAS BRO! Jesus.. I could not help a costumer without feeling like I was going to vomit all over them while giving them back their change (and have a good day BLEEEERRGGGG.... !!!! sir) I told my boss that I was sick, that I needed to go home. Even offered that I would finish the stocking job I was doing as well before leaving. Many of these, the employee could've sued. I had a terrible job. Worked at an after school/Summer camp program. Well, the job itself wasn't bad... loved the kids & actually loved the program. It was run by a mother & daughter. The daughter, about my age, was great. Mother was mean. It just seemed though that I couldn't do anything right. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, & came in & said I'd need to occasionally sit down more (standing is expected most of the time). The daughter said that'd be fine. The mother wasn't there at the time when I came in, & I figured daughter would tell her. After months of constant berating, she (the mother) went off on me in front of some of the kids one day about some stupid stuff, but mentioned my sitting as well. Several times I had to "remind" him the things he wanted me to do were against company policy or even illegal. He fired me on a trumped up charge. Then he lied to the state to keep me from getting unemployment.

They claimed you could but they only allowed 2 teachers per month. Out of a staff of over 75. Then my coworker came down with aggressive stage 4 brain cancer. She had to work to keep her insurance and once the 10 days were up she had no choice but to come in. She worked through chemo and radiation. She was on meds that made her head swell up huge. I have seldom been that angry over the way the admin treated her. I would have gladly given her some of my days. I understand the HR director was the one who made her stay and did nothing to help the situation. She went home one Friday after school and died over the weekend. The next year they started a sick leave bank for people to give some of their sick leave to others. Shortly all the admin just about had left due to terminal illness or retirement. Karma.
My mom worked with a lady she became friends with at our county high school district, and her friend would take work home with her at night with no appreciation from the higher ups. My mom was constantly encouraging her to retire and enjoy havung free time, but by the time she did she had cancer and spent 3 days a week getting cemo and eventually passing away.

Over the past 10 years I've had to explain that to a number of excellent employers, particularly the most recent one. To this day whenever that company submits an intention to offer services, the proposal has either been shredded or "donated to the hamster-bedding foundation" as we like to call it.
I have had many amazing bosses, but one had it in for me and when I got a British Bulldog puppy everyone we crowded around wanting to see photos except her. They begged her to come look (we didn't really get along so I didn't care if she looked or not). She walked over, took one look and said 'funny how dogs resemble their owners' and walked off. I knew someone who's dad got shot 3 times and she went to go pick him up from the hospital when he was ready to go home and asked her boss for the next day off to get him settled and they said no. On the other side, I later had a boss who knew I was sick before I did. I started my day as normal, felt fine, shift was pretty busy so I didn't pay much attention to myself, or get lost in my thoughts like I did when it was quiet. During a lull, she mentioned that I looked tired and pale, but I insisted I was okay. It wasn't long after that when I realised I actually felt rotten, and had a pretty bad cold, so she sent me home. It all happened in less than an hour, and I was back home in bed by lunchtime.

I was working in the O.R. and one of the general surgeons I worked with diagnosed me with gallbladder problems. Turns out I ended up setting the record at the hospital for the longest HIDA scan (test to see how long it takes for your gallbladder to empty). When my surgeon and I approached my boss (O.R. Director) to tell her I needed a day off for surgery, she actually asked if I "really" needed to have it removed. My surgeon was like, "Yeah, if you don't want it to rupture and her possibly die". That woman hated me. I didn't work there much longer after that.
A couple years ago I contracted chicken pox from a patient that I had contact with. FYI you can get chicken pox multiple times in your life. I missed about 6-7 weeks of work and during that time my manager repeatedly would call me all flustered and demanded i tell her how much longer i was planning on being sick for lol Like dam woman, i'll come in when the spots and fever are gone!!
Actually, i live in spain. And it's not much better. I used to work in a restaurant where with my 40 hour contract i worked up to 60 hours a week.and then on 24 hour contract up to 40 hours a week. Worked from time to time 1 month withouth having a day off. Being called on my vacation, that i finally got after 3 years, to order in products. Had to pay 1 euro for each dish i broke. Got yelled at when we had to stay half an hour more to clean up because there was too much to clean ( which btw is only 3 euros more). 4 out of 5 times got called to work on my day off. And i probably could keep going on, but that's what you have to endure when you need to pay bills on a crappy wage. The worst of it all is probably that you can't put in a complaint because where i live nearly all of them are the same, so if they know you put a complaint out on one it would get extremely hard to find a new job. And can't leave either because of the mortgage
These are disgusting and bring up my worst experiences. I worked at a clothing store and they scheduled shifts one week at a time and would let you know on Friday if you were working Saturday. They also liked to change around shifts without telling you. One such day I ended up going to shop at this store and my manager berated me while I was in the change room that I had missed my shift that day, even though when I checked the schedule 2 days ago it said I wasn't working.
That is what happens when society is run by Megalomaniac Narcissistic, sadistic psychopaths and there is zero regulation and protection for regular workers. Thus one ends up working for sadistic psychopaths who just love the feeling of power they get by destroying people around them.
And this is why I could never live in America. We have very strict workers rights. Also under 18 year old can have a summer job but it's very rare for them to work during the school year. And also we pay our servers/shop workers etc. a living wage.
My boss once told me if we didn't have a productive weekend shift he was going to hand me a rope on monday. He then repeated it in front of his boss and another upper manager. He then one day handed me a rope.
My former employer closed the doors and laid everyone off without giving us much notice. 3 months later I got a new and way better job even though I was know longer a supervisor like I was previously. They texted me asking if I would work for them again remotely since I guess they moved the entire operation to Texas. My only response was "Not today Satan...not today." Never heard from them again, they gave a women who worked for them for 19 years a one week severance package, and even if I didnt have a new job at the time I wouldnt of accepted it.
I used to have a part time job in a bookstore (I was standing at information desk telling people where to find their book). Once, after worling there for a year or so, I forgot about my shift (I wrote it into my calendar for Sunday but it was supposed to be on Satursday). During the day I forgot nobody called to tell me (I actually live really close so if someone called me I would be there in like 5 minutes). Then at night my boss wrote an email letting me know I was fired immediately because he saw me as "a spoilt cell in a perfectly working ecosystem" and he explained that missing my shift caused him huge trouble and if everybody was like me, the whole system would rot. I was really shocked what kind of bullshit this person came up with.

I used to work for a pet shop some years ago. I had been sick for a while *cough* 3 months *cough* with some kind of stomach bug. This particular day was just painful. I could not stand upright, I had to go to the bathroom every 10 minutes orso to have explosive everything coming from everywhere!!! I WAS BRO! Jesus.. I could not help a costumer without feeling like I was going to vomit all over them while giving them back their change (and have a good day BLEEEERRGGGG.... !!!! sir) I told my boss that I was sick, that I needed to go home. Even offered that I would finish the stocking job I was doing as well before leaving. THAT FREAKING LOONY! started telling me how a good running bussiness is run by people that give their all! that we were cogs in a wheel... I was standing next to him, sweating, white as snow, bend over while praying to the gods to keep my a**s and mouth from spraying around the shop. gods... that man was something alright! went home, never seen the doctor.

Load More Replies... Many of these, the employee could've sued. I had a terrible job. Worked at an after school/Summer camp program. Well, the job itself wasn't bad... loved the kids & actually loved the program. It was run by a mother & daughter. The daughter, about my age, was great. Mother was mean. It just seemed though that I couldn't do anything right. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, & came in & said I'd need to occasionally sit down more (standing is expected most of the time). The daughter said that'd be fine. The mother wasn't there at the time when I came in, & I figured daughter would tell her. After months of constant berating, she (the mother) went off on me in front of some of the kids one day about some stupid stuff, but mentioned my sitting as well. I said something about the fibromyalgia, & she asked why I never told her. I was dumbfounded. Then she wanted to know why staff never told her anything. Gee, wonder why. I quit the next day.
