We all make fools out of ourselves every now and then. Nobody is safe from that unwelcome sense of anxiety once you realized the thing you just said makes zero sense. But things that leave your mouth, whether IRL or online, do stay there, oftentimes forever.

And there’s a whole corner of Reddit, r/S***AmericansSay, dedicated entirely to the mission of collecting the stupidest, funniest, and sometimes embarrassing cases of people being so convinced they know better when they couldn’t be further away from the truth.

So let’s ready ourselves for the ensued hilarity, ‘cause we are about to have a fair share of it, trust me.

Not so few, in my experience. I got a shedload of insults when I cited some American newspapers about the fact that Fox news lawyers claimed in court that no one believes whatever Tucker Carlson presents as facts.

Canada has never allowed slavery. Not that Canada has not committed its share of despicable acts, mainly against our Native brothers and sisters, but at least we have that distinction.

The 1772 ruling (backed by the ruling in a similar case from 1569) ruled that there was no basis for slavery in English or Welsh common law, which was underpinned by the Magna Carta, and against Habeas Corpus. The case in 1772 went against Article 39 of the Magna Carta, which was part of English law. Effectively ruling that it wasn't legal on the mainland, chattel slavery on the mainland had been abolished in 1381, and no law had ever been made actually legalising slavery in England and Wales. Effectively, holders and traders of slaves on the mainland had been breaking the law, as it wasn't actually legal in the first place.

Wow she got this wrong on so many levels firstly none of the other countries had a full blown civil war over the issue of banning slavery (which actually constitutes that half of the white male population were terrorist for that time) they banned it civilly because it was the right thing to do

Strange that 30K slaves fled to come here to Canada, where apparently they'd be held in bondage and turn their back on the "freedom" of America via the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman working so hard to transfer American slaves into ....slavery?? (1793, Upper Canada had anti-slavery laws in place, a full 72 years before the US.)

White men did not fight to abolish slavery in the Civil War. Some white men fought to keep slavery, and others fought to save the Union. Very few white people (John Brown is a good example of one who did, though he technically died before the war) were particularly willing to lay their lives on the line to abolish slavery (not that there weren't a significant number of pro-abolitionist whites).

The French Revolution had abolished slavery for the first time in 1794, which was quite consistent with the very spirit of it (freedom and equality you know). That's something the American Revolution, which occurred years before, doesn't seem to have even considered. Unfortunately though, Napoleon restored slavery in 1804. Only in 1848 was slavery abolished for good in France.

Denmark gave up its slaves in 1803. I believe it was the first nation to do so, so your facts are a bit wrong. It would have been nice to think that it was already in 1788, but it is unfortunately not so. Greetings from Denmark .

There’s an abundance of scientific evidence that shows humans are poor judges of their own abilities, whether it’s their sense of humor or grammar. In fact, psychologists believe that we are more blind to our own failings than we realize. This idea comes from the 1999 study in which David Dunning and Justin Kruger from Cornell University, New York, tested if people who lack skills and abilities are also more likely to lack awareness of their lack of ability.

The results of the tests led the authors to the interpretation that accurately assessing one's skill level relies on some of the same core abilities as actually performing that skill. It led them to the conclusion that the least competent maybe suffering a double deficit.

“Not only are they incompetent, but they lack the mental tools to judge their own incompetence,” Kruger and Dunning thought. During the course of four individual tests run on participants, the scientists discovered that “People who scored in the lowest percentiles on tests of grammar, humor, and logic also tended to dramatically overestimate how well they had performed (their actual test scores placed them in the 12th percentile, but they estimated that their performance placed them in the 62nd percentile).”

Dunning shared his impressions in an article for Pacific Standard: "In many cases, incompetence does not leave people disoriented, perplexed, or cautious. Instead, the incompetent are often blessed with an inappropriate confidence, buoyed by something that feels to them like knowledge." The phenomenon is known as the Dunning-Kruger Effect and most of us have surely encountered numerous cases of it in real life.
