We all make fools out of ourselves every now and then. Nobody is safe from that unwelcome sense of anxiety once you realized the thing you just said makes zero sense. But things that leave your mouth, whether IRL or online, do stay there, oftentimes forever.

And there’s a whole corner of Reddit, r/S***AmericansSay, dedicated entirely to the mission of collecting the stupidest, funniest, and sometimes embarrassing cases of people being so convinced they know better when they couldn’t be further away from the truth.

So let’s ready ourselves for the ensued hilarity, ‘cause we are about to have a fair share of it, trust me.

“Who Was The First Country On Planet Earth To Ban Slavery? That’s Right, America”

Aironwood Report

There’s an abundance of scientific evidence that shows humans are poor judges of their own abilities, whether it’s their sense of humor or grammar. In fact, psychologists believe that we are more blind to our own failings than we realize. This idea comes from the 1999 study in which David Dunning and Justin Kruger from Cornell University, New York, tested if people who lack skills and abilities are also more likely to lack awareness of their lack of ability.

The results of the tests led the authors to the interpretation that accurately assessing one's skill level relies on some of the same core abilities as actually performing that skill. It led them to the conclusion that the least competent maybe suffering a double deficit.

“Not only are they incompetent, but they lack the mental tools to judge their own incompetence,” Kruger and Dunning thought. During the course of four individual tests run on participants, the scientists discovered that “People who scored in the lowest percentiles on tests of grammar, humor, and logic also tended to dramatically overestimate how well they had performed (their actual test scores placed them in the 12th percentile, but they estimated that their performance placed them in the 62nd percentile).”

I was older than I would EVER care to publicly admit when I learned that “military time” I often heard referred was not some secret, complicated way of working out the time you’re only privy to having served in the army but simply the reading of a 24 hour clock.

Dunning shared his impressions in an article for Pacific Standard: "In many cases, incompetence does not leave people disoriented, perplexed, or cautious. Instead, the incompetent are often blessed with an inappropriate confidence, buoyed by something that feels to them like knowledge." The phenomenon is known as the Dunning-Kruger Effect and most of us have surely encountered numerous cases of it in real life.

I’m on Medicaid and I’ve never been able to choose a doctor. My insurance provider picks them for me. In fact, they have denied referrals to see specialists because they didn’t feel my condition was severe enough to justify the cost.

Im from serbia, and healthcare is for free for everyone who is unemployed or socially endangered,if you have a job then they take around 40 euros a month for your healthcare from your salary. And I guess the waiting times are longer then in the developed countries, so for surgery sometimes you have to wait a month or two but I have never in my life payed for any service provided by the hospital or lab tests or anything. I never even cared about bringing a wallet with me because there is no reason for you to be charged for anything. It's just mind boggling to think in america this is all so bad...

Wow. Yeah, unfortunately it is that bad here. I need a cardiac ablation to hopefully cure my heart condition, and because I don't have insurance I was told it would cost between $40,000 and $60,000 dollars. I've never made more than $30,000 in an entire year, and that's still more than minimum wage.. So until I can find a job with health insurance, all I can do is take maintenance medication.

You don’t really get to pick your doctor in the US. Every insurance company gives you a list of doctors in your area that take their insurance, otherwise you’ll pay more. A couple times in the past, I have had to go away from my longtime doctor while on some carriers. Once I went to a different company with a different insurance provider, I was able to go back to her.

That's not really true for most Americans, though. Most of us get whatever insurer our employer has chosen and can pick from the list of doctors in our area that take that insurance. If you're on Medicare or Medicaid the list gets smaller, because they reimburse so poorly many doctors won't accept them.

I see comments from Canada saying this isn't true, I'm not suggesting they are lying but I live in the capital of my province, so a major city and have a doctor that I chose, I'm also free to switch if I want, I love my doctor though and he knows me and my history and treats me accordingly, uniquely to my needs, so I never would.

This is not true in Quebec. If we want to switch, or have to switch because you move towns, you are put on a waiting list...it's about 2 years and then they just assign you a doctor. No choice. I love in Montreal and trust me...it's true. .Still beats the US health system.
