We all make fools out of ourselves every now and then. Nobody is safe from that unwelcome sense of anxiety once you realized the thing you just said makes zero sense. But things that leave your mouth, whether IRL or online, do stay there, oftentimes forever.

And there’s a whole corner of Reddit, r/S***AmericansSay, dedicated entirely to the mission of collecting the stupidest, funniest, and sometimes embarrassing cases of people being so convinced they know better when they couldn’t be further away from the truth.

So let’s ready ourselves for the ensued hilarity, ‘cause we are about to have a fair share of it, trust me.

Aironwood Report

There’s an abundance of scientific evidence that shows humans are poor judges of their own abilities, whether it’s their sense of humor or grammar. In fact, psychologists believe that we are more blind to our own failings than we realize. This idea comes from the 1999 study in which David Dunning and Justin Kruger from Cornell University, New York, tested if people who lack skills and abilities are also more likely to lack awareness of their lack of ability.

The results of the tests led the authors to the interpretation that accurately assessing one's skill level relies on some of the same core abilities as actually performing that skill. It led them to the conclusion that the least competent maybe suffering a double deficit.

“Not only are they incompetent, but they lack the mental tools to judge their own incompetence,” Kruger and Dunning thought. During the course of four individual tests run on participants, the scientists discovered that “People who scored in the lowest percentiles on tests of grammar, humor, and logic also tended to dramatically overestimate how well they had performed (their actual test scores placed them in the 12th percentile, but they estimated that their performance placed them in the 62nd percentile).”

Dunning shared his impressions in an article for Pacific Standard: "In many cases, incompetence does not leave people disoriented, perplexed, or cautious. Instead, the incompetent are often blessed with an inappropriate confidence, buoyed by something that feels to them like knowledge." The phenomenon is known as the Dunning-Kruger Effect and most of us have surely encountered numerous cases of it in real life.

In most countries you have to supply your own fridge and washing machine etc when you move into a house, unlike many places in the US. When my mum lived in the US, she told me that the fridge, washer and dryers are left at the house when you move, I was shocked. I didn’t know it was a thing unless you rented a house furnished. When we move house we take those appliances with us and are ours to keep coz we paid for them.

In Germany even in rentals it is totally normal to bring your own kitchen furniture and appliances. Sometimes you have the option to pay some money one time or in installments and take over the previous renters kitchen. But if you don't want to they may have to come in and get rid of it. Sometimes it is in the rental contract that you can't refuse taking over the kitchen.

Yes, Germans take it one step further... It seems odd because the cabinets are fixed and usually selected to the size of the kitchen, not to mention worktops. Yes, we Dutchies are judging you and also very happy that German kitchens seem a lot cheaper, maybe because of that ;)

I knew a man in UK that didn't have a refrigerator... but he was a bit unusual and only ate potatoes and beans 🤣 I'm not sure if she seriously thought brits don't have them, maybe the framing was off and she just wondered where people usually keep theirs since she doesn't see them in pictures. People keep appliances in weird places sometimes, for me it's a very odd thought to have a washer in the kitchen for an example (I wouldn't want dirty clothes anywhere near my food)

In Australia, we're so poor (because we're not America) that only 1 in 20 houses can afford a fridge so neighbours will all club together to buy one and then we all use it. Making coffee is a real drag (milk). We each have the fridge for a week and then we move it to the next person's house. It's my turn next week and I'm so excited!

"I didn't see fridges in pictures of kitchens, what's up with that?" is a completely legitimate question. Maybe she could have phrased it differently than "do you have one", but it is a fair question. British fridges are often hidden behind cabinets... so why would you expect her to see something that is hidden?

This is actually not a horrible question. It sounds quite ignorant on the surface, but having lived in the Netherlands for a couple years it makes sense to me. Our home had a small refrigerator (I've forgotten what they typically called them) that looked a bit like a cabinet. We had a second larger fridge in our garage because we were a large family.

In the Netherlands, when you move, you take mostly everything with you unless it's agreed upon with the new owner about leaving some stuff behind. (Sometimes we leave a few curtains or the floors if the new owner wants to take it). As for appliances, the fridge and stove we take with us, unless they're built in. That means they are built behind or inside cabinets and are part of the kitchen design. We don't leave our furniture behind, we even take our light fixtures. Leaving them behind when not agreed upon is a breach of contract and you can get fined for that.

Many years ago I read an interview of Bret Easton Ellis, where he explained something about American psychology that has stuck to my mind ever since. He said that Americans really NEED to believe that European countries have remained backward medieval realms where technology has hardly reached the level the USA roughly had in the 1930's or 50's. They need to see Europe as the past, so they can see themselves as the present, the place where everything is happening now and the future is made possible. You can see that in some American movies about France for example, policemen with moustaches driving popular car models from the 1960's... in the 2000's. The truth is, the USA are the backward country more often than you'd think, because they were the first to get new technologies indeed, but never bothered upgrading them afterwards. I was surprised to learn that NYC has one of the poorest Internet connection network among large cities of the world.

Well apart from being a complete idiot to think that the rest of the wall doesn't have refrigerators, the reason you don't see them in modern British kitchens is because we tend to disguise them with doors that match the rest of the kitchen - so call "built-in" appliances. We also call them "fridges".

moconnell avatar

We've had 'built-in' refrigerators in the US as well, and you can still get them. They've largely fallen out of fashion because you're basically stuck with whatever fridge can be purchased to match the cabinets, and then you're stuck with it forever. Most of them that I have seen tend to aesthetically date themselves pretty badly.
