Elevated Bus That Drives Above Traffic Jams

China’s traffic jams are legendary. One jam even has its own Wikipedia page dedicated to it (China National Highway 110 traffic jam. Look it up). But the country’s epic gridlock problems might soon be a thing of the past if plans for this amazing elevated bus go ahead.

Take a look at the pictures below to see for yourself what we mean. It’s known as the Transit Elevated Bus (TEB) and it could very well be the future of public transport. It’s only a concept for the moment but a working mini model was recently presented at the 19th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo. The bus will be able to carry up to 1200 passengers and will take them to work and back by literally driving over the traffic. It’s a brilliant idea that could potentially alleviate congestion and reduce pollution in the world’s most populous country. If approved it could also be ready in as little as one year’s time.

sounds like a good idea but will need to be a bit higher for semi's and other large vehicles

Good idea in concept but can't see it working in reality, all it would take is a vehicle to be slightly out of lane and kaboooom!!

There would probably be high rails installed on the sides of road to prevent that.

Trains don't bend like Rubber. It would be straight edges, if cars are under that train during a turn it would be crazy dangerous!

this is assuming a lot of conditions for it to work like the simulations say. Like drivers needing to spontaneously change lanes and not paying full attention. A one year timeline seems a bit tight to even just retrofit busy city streets to accommodate the leg structures. I don't see how this is more cost effective than a simple elevated train/monorail line. You could still have elevated stations just like those on here, and anywhere else. I wouldn't mind seeing this in a scifi movie, because it looks really pretty and the concept is fun, but it is not as practical as it tries to make itself out to be.

I guess they want to scare drivers off the road... Imagine that thing all of a sudden being over you on a bend ... Would be so daunting !

Wouldnt it be better if it drove in the opposite direction of the traffic? That way drivers can adjust themselves because they see it coming instead of getting scared shitless when suddenly a shadow casts over you from behind.

The concept is marvelous. I question the adaptability of drivers. How can a driver tune the radio, comb their hair, talk on the phone, eat a sandwich, AND look out for a bus. Hmmmm?

I love this idea. I have a few questions. What happens when cars change lanes or swerve over their line. Does it become dark, like a tunnel when the train passes over cars?

Because dedicated bus lanes are far too cheap, we came up with a solution that basically does the same and costs us billions and billions extra, in terms of vehicle and infrastructure.

Wouldn't work in Jakarta. We have some bus-only lane but all other vehicles often use them.

Seems pretty similar to me as a trolley/streetcar line that also rides the road with traffic-- there are special streetcar-only signals in some places to cross traffic/merge, the streetcar can stop pretty quickly to avoid collisions (not sure how this would work with this massive bus but it would have to have some kind of braking capabilities). It's still driven by a person so with some regulations and thought I think it could definitely work. As for trucks/large vehicles, who knows, maybe that's not as big of a problem in the city in Beijing? I live in a city myself and the trucks take an outer route around the city except when making deliveries, they don't overlap the main bus or car routes much at all. It seems like these people have put a lot of thought into it and I'm sure Beijing city planners will have even more ideas and solutions if they see potential in it.

Yea that will work great in China. I do not think this Chinese guys knows how the Chinese drive in China. I have lived in China 8 years and driven for the past 2 years. Intersections, large trucks and erratic driving will make this impossible. 1234-57490...4b0955.jpg 1234-574903f4b0955.jpg
