UK Is Testing Roads That Charge Electric Cars As They Drive
Imagine never having to pull over to fuel your car. This is exactly what Highways England is planning to implement for drivers of electric vehicles. Automobiles would be fitted with wireless technology and then driven on roads with special electromagnetic field generating equipment buried underneath. Trials will run for 18 months before a decision is made to move the project to public roads. This is not the first time such technology sees the light of day: i
“Vehicle technologies are advancing at an ever increasing pace and we’re committed to supporting the growth of ultra-low emissions vehicles on England’s motorways and major A roads,” wrote Highways England chief highways engineer, Mike Wilson. “The off-road trials of wireless power technology will help to create a more sustainable road network for England and open up new opportunities for businesses that transport goods across the country.”

Electric cables are buried under the road to generate electromagnetic fields which are caught by a coil inside the vehicle and converted into electricity
The government is already committing £500 million over the next five years to keep Britain at the forefront of this technology

Share on FacebookNumbers I found on the web state that at the end of 2012 there were 28.7 million cars registered in the UK. By december 2014 there were 24.500 electric cars driving in the UK. That's less than 1% of the cars. So you're burning fossil energy at the powerplant to generate electricity, then you're gonna put a lane out there that is fulltime powered, so every electric car (again, less than 1% of all the cars) can charge itself when they feel an urge to. Who the f**k did the math on this? YOU'RE FIRED!
Maybe the electricity comes from a nuclear plant or from some hydro-electric power plant ... There are many alternatives!

That's news to me and ii live here, haven't seen or heard anything like this anywhere.. Were not exactly renowned for our foreword thinking about renewables etc and I've never seen an electric car, it must be mixed up with the Netherlands.
And are these drivers going to get this charge up free or are there going to be cameras that pickup the number plate and then they get sent a bill for charging the batteries, or are the other vehicle drivers going to be paying this bill as usual.
The title should be changed to: "British Government Tests Prototype of Daring Scheme to Open-pit Mine All Third-World Countries to Source Enough Copper to Bury in Motorways Necessary to Undertake Most Wasteful Means of Recharging Vehicles in Order to Placate Lazy and Forgetful Electorate."
hydrogen cars are a better alternative, but this is still great news.
Agree with Snokie Death. Easy to understand that it is another rip off to the whole (car owner) society for the benefit of the one percent. And not to mention the cost and resource. This is just another Green BS!
Interesting idea, but how do you keep tabs on how the consumer pays for it?
i think the technology is great. but. yes, the big BUT. this does not address the whole socio-economic politics of the necessity, really, for ownership of personal vehicle. it is a created 'status symbol' that only fills the coffers of the already wealthy, with 'money'. ho hum
If you live in a city with even a half decent public transport system, sure you can make that claim but outside of one it becomes as needed as a horse and buggy were a century and a half ago

Only a complete and utter imbecile would think a 50 Hz radio signal is dangerous. And comparing it to a 2 to 5 GHz microwave signal means we have to start culling the herd starting here.

actually even do it is a fossil fuel electricity, if you obtain it in a power plant it's efficiency goes from 25% from a normal combustion car to 60% in a special power plant ... it's not just that, in the future like it or not we will have to find alternatives for fossil fuel so why not move to electric cars from now on ?
