89-Year-Old Woman Has Knitted 450 Blankets For Shelter Dogs, And It’s Adorable

There are thousands of dogs in shelters who are waiting to be adopted. And while they patiently wait for a forever home they absolutely deserve, pups rely on shelter employees and volunteers to look after them and keep them company. It’s the most rewarding work a dog lover can do, and they certainly do their best at providing love and care for these animals.

However, one particular lady stood out from the crowd of kind-hearted helpers. The 89-year-old Maisie Green from the UK has knitted over 450 blankets to help dogs at the shelter stay warm during the cold nights they spend in kennels.

A couple of years ago, a dog shelter in England called Dogs Trust started an initiative asking people to knit dog coats.

“Nifty with needles or handy with a crochet hook? We’re calling all crafty types to contribute home-made dog coats for our Hope Project Christmas hampers,” the shelter wrote on their Facebook page.

This initiative has been helping homeless dog owners to keep their four-legged buddies warm during the cold of the winter.

The idea of helping animals by knitting was very appealing to Green, after all, she loves knitting and she’s very good at it so why not share this amazing skill with those in need?

“I love knitting and I love dogs, so this combines both wonderfully! It takes me three days to knit a blanket and one day to knit a doggy coat. It keeps me busy and often, I like to knit whilst watching television. I’m delighted to be helping the four-legged residents at the center in some way,” the 89-year-old-lady said.

Apparently, Green has been doing the good deed for 3 years now. She donates blankets and coats three times a year and each time with the help of her family, she brings in more than a dozen handmade goods for the pups.

“Maisie regularly brings along her knitted donations and we are so grateful for her support. With the chill of the winter months really starting to creep up on us, I know our dogs are very pleased to put the items to good use – and love feeling extra cosy!” said the Rehoming Centre Manager at Dogs Trust Basildon.

What a lovely woman! This makes me want to learn how to knit properly , so I can make little doggie jumpers and blankets, and even kitty jumpers and blankets, or little scarves! Unfortunately, I'm pretty much inept at both sewing and knitting..

Same here, this is just the motivation I need to really get good at crocheting! Good luck!

I crochet hundreds of scarves and hats and donate them to charities for the homeless, but I love the idea of also doing blankets for shelter animals. Time to find one near me!

Wonderful! This is an antidote to the bad news that seems pervasive. Thank you, Maisie!

Knitted/crochet blankets are great for shelter cats, too! Cats usually have a more difficult time adjusting to a new home. If they have their own blanket that they can take to their new home from the shelter, it will help them transition better!

I would love to sit down and talk with her, I know, with a doubt, the time would go by way to fast. I love these stories BP. We need better ways to connect people together.

The price for dog sweaters is actual robbery, therefore, we couldn't buy some sweaters and drop them off at the shelters, in cold climates dogs with little fur should have something to wear, and the dogs in kennels would love to be warm !!!

This lady is a national treasure! With all the depressing news stories in the papers, what a treat to see someone do a fantastic service for the poor animals.

Bless you Maisie. What makes me sad is the fact that those puppers are kept in kennels where they have to freeze during winter time. That's a shame.

My mother crochets and I asked her to make me a couple blankets for my cats. She scoffed because she's a dog person, but she made them for me. Now I troll her by sending her pics of the cats in the blankets all the time. Sammy-Lucy...c54459.jpg Sammy-Lucy-with-new-blankets-5d16164c54459.jpg

Bonus: She complained to one of her friends about making the blankets for cats. I guess she didn't realize her friend had a cat and she asked her to make her a blanket for them, too. The friend also sends her pics of her cat with the blanket, lol.

I actually put away my crochet hooks (I wasn't any good) because I figured that no one needs anything like that anymore!

I wasn't any good for a while either, but if you enjoyed it, dig out those hooks and have at it. I'm not amazing, but I can trundle along and it's a pleasure.
