Vegan Mom Is Livid After Learning A Family Member Who Watched Her Kid For Free Had A Steak For Dinner For Themselves

Interview With Author
ADVERTISEMENT

We know that doing somebody a favor won’t always result in you being thanked. If the internet’s taught us one thing, it’s that your good deeds might not be enough and some people will always, always, always find something to criticize you for. No matter how much you sacrifice for them, it’s never enough.

Case in point, a redditor, a parent to seven kids (six of whom still live at home with one having already flown out of the nest), turned to the r/entitledparents subreddit to share their story about babysitting their little cousin for their uncle while they were away. The issue? The cousin’s family had recently gone vegan. That wasn’t a problem for the OP, though: they cooked their cousin their vegan meals.

However, things completely blew up after the uncle’s wife realized that the redditor was still cooking meat in their house for everyone else. The family drama was so big, it ended up on Reddit, and the reactions were priceless. Scroll down for the full story in the OP’s own words, and when you’re all done, share your thoughts in the comments, dear Pandas.

Bored Panda reached out to redditor u/donut_clouds, the author of the post, and they were kind enough to answer our questions. Read on for our full interview with the parent-of-seven who, as it turns out, is actually a fan of Bored Panda.

Some entitled people can start drama over the smallest things…

A kind parent agreed to babysit their little cousin for free, but things turned sour after their vegan mom realized that meat wasn’t banned from the house

Redditor u/donut_clouds revealed to Bored Panda that, so far, there haven’t been any new developments to the story. “They fly back Sunday night, and they’re picking the kid up Sunday morning. I’m expecting her to yell at me, and me to laugh at her,” the OP told us what they expect the parents’ reactions to be.

According to the OP, their uncle’s wife reacted as strongly as she did to the entire situation because “She is not used to hearing ‘no.’ Her husband has never told her ‘no’ once in his life. So she expects people to just fall in line,” they explained.

The author of the post shared some of their tips and tricks for new parents. Here’s what they told us: “Advice for new parents: Nothing matters except for your child. If you have to live on 1 hour sleep for 2 years, then do it. If you have to skip breakfast so your kid can eat dinner, YOU DO IT.”

They continued: “It might not be fun, but when you see your child grow up to do better than you ever did, it’s all worth it.”

The majority of redditors were united in thinking that the cousin’s mom was acting ridiculous, trying to ban meat in someone else’s home. It sounds just a bit too entitled when you consider the fact that she was trying to control the OP who was doing her a huge favor. You should never look a gift horse in the mouth, otherwise you might indirectly find out what the internet thinks of your actions.

There’s a lot of babysitting drama online. A LOT of it. Just last week, Bored Panda wrote about how some entitled parents pressure their relatives into working as unpaid babysitters… even when they expressly tell them that they’ve got a lot going in their lives.

We spoke to comedy writer and single mom Ariane Sherine, from the UK, to get her perspective about what truly makes a babysitter great, and to hear her thoughts on childhood independence. She shared how parents can thank their babysitters if the latter won’t accept payment or it’s awkward to offer them money.

“If they won’t accept money, or it doesn’t feel right to offer it, how about giving them gifts? My friend John looks after my daughter for me a lot and I gave him an iPhone and Apple Watch as he wouldn’t accept money. He’s an Apple fanboy so it made him happy!” Ariane told Bored Panda.

“My daughter’s 11 now and she wants to go out alone but I’m not happy with that. I know in the next few years she’ll want more independence because she wants it now!” the mom shared her thoughts about her daughter wanting more freedom.

“Kids usually tell you what they want and grumble at you for being overprotective. But I’m always going to be overprotective when it comes to her because she’s my baby,” she said.

“I think the main thing is to focus on the child and give them lots of undivided attention instead of being absentminded and distracted,” Ariane shared her thoughts about what makes for a great babysitter. It’s genuinely caring about the child and giving them the attention that they need. Babysitting is far more than plopping the kid in front of the TV and then doing whatever.

“Lily loves being babysat by John because he’s very funny and makes silly jokes. He’s also totally willing to get involved in whatever she wants to do, whether that’s playing a game or doing a quiz. He doesn’t just sit there on his phone and ignore her!” the mom said.

The OP shared a bit more info about the situation and their family in the comments

According to childhood independence expert Lenore Skenazy, the founder of the Let Grow nonprofit and the Free-Range Kids movement, a major mistake that some parents make is keeping their kids under constant surveillance.

“One thing many parents are choosing today is to keep their kids under constant surveillance, with the help of tech. Whether it’s being able to track their kids’ movements, read their browsing history, or even scan their texts, parents have all sorts of new tools to make them seemingly omniscient,” she stressed that kids need privacy.

“For the same reason you didn’t want your parents to read your diary, or to build a treehouse on the branch right next to YOUR treehouse, children need some space to grow into their own person. Kids need to know they are loved, but they also need to know they are trusted. They can’t prove that if parents never actually let them do some things literally on their own, without constant surveillance,” she explained that some parents are a bit too overbearing and controlling. Which is why she advises the “talk, don’t stalk” approach when raising kids. This builds a sense of trust between parents and their munchkins.

“Try to keep the lines of communication open with your kids, and gradually give them more freedom as they get older and earn it by being responsible. Taking all independence away for their ‘safety’ is a way to teach them that you don’t think they can handle anything on their own— how deflating!—and that you don’t trust them. Would you appreciate a spouse who tracked your every move? Would you feel trusted? Love requires some trust.

It's the kind of behavior that gives vegans a bad reputation. But coming from a Sindee (not Cindy)...

One of my relatives' exes (ex is now a friend) is vegan since adolescence. The ex finds this kind of behaviour self-righteous and annoying. After the break-up (on good terms), I did miss their intelligence and good nature. I also missed the vegan cake at the Christmas family reunion - it was delicious. May the ex continue to redeem the bad rep of vegans and eat yummy cake.

OMG the person that pointed out that the camp wouldn't be serving the kid vegan meals! I didn't even think about that. With fishing, trapping, and cooking as part of the itinerary, that kid is FOR SURE not eating a vegan diet for those two months.

Even if he is choosing to eat only vegan food and not participating in the fishing and trapping, they seem to be just fine sending him to a very non-vegan environment. Sindee sounds like she's looking for drama and an opportunity to make herself outraged.

This insane EM sounds exactly like the type of person who would force her cat(s) on a vegan diet, which is legitimately considered cruelty as cats cannot survive a long term diet of vegan food. They require way too much protein. Same with dogs, except dogs can survive on a vegan diet, but they absolutely cannot thrive. They will have no energy. I hope this EM doesn't have pets.

These people should have there kids taken away by child care. It not a option for the kids to be forced to "go vegan" there are loads of studies the prove that lack of protein from meat is not good for growing children. The grow up with lower bone mas a even thought they have better BMI they are on average shorter by age and have less muscle mass. I'm not saying stuff the kids with burgers every day. A healthy diet is a balanced diet and are western culture lacks that but to force irrational eating habits on you kids is not fair on them.

It's not her family but the uncle's, so that's kind of 'ballsie' of her. Tell Uncle he has x amount of hours to pick up his daughter or drop her off with Sindee's mother.....which begs the ? why isn't her mom taking this on? EM needs to be taken down a few notches and Uncle needs to rise up a few himself.

This is why vegans get no respect. She didn't look the gift horse in the mouth, she stuck her arm all the way down the gift horse's throat and try to pull out its stomach. I would tell her to kick rocks. I don't blame you, no one will tell me how to eat in my own home..

Unless she sent hwr son to a vegan camp he is being offered mac abd cheese , hamburgers, hot dogs, cereal with cows milk, butter, eggs for bfast, with both bacon and sausage.... If she wants to have a vegan household thats fine... and if she doesn't want her daughter to he exposed to seeing animal products... she better either fly ,drive, or walk home and pick this child up. As Ivwould tell her i'm serving BBQ for dinner.

The vegans who try to push thier diets on others are truly annoying. I don't mind the ones who mind thier own business, but the ones who scream at random people's food choices tick me off. Also when they yell at farmers calling farms brutal slaughter houses when they themselves have never been on a farm, or studied biology, or take into account that some people are allergic to thier vegan alternatives. (I hate how people push avocados in my face. Yes they are healthy and delicious, I however am highly allergic to them, chickpeas, and bellpeppers.) Also coming from a farming community I can say that we take as good of care of our animals as possible. It's no secret that farm raised stuff is better and way healthier for you. Three humans are biologically omnivores. We need a variety of foods to be healthy, (not just chemically processed soy to look like meat). I don't comment on thier food choices, they should not comment on others. No offense the vegans who dont.

I have loved ones who are vegan, who have been tortured in their childhood by relatives who refuse to serve them vegan meals. Here's the difference, though: OP *does* serve vegan meals to the vegan child, while cooking animal for his own family. That's fine. Furthermore, I question whether the kid really WANTS to be vegan, or if the diet is forced on them by the mother. The choice of what diet to follow should be up to the individual, not forced on them by anyone. I'm disgusted whenever a vegan child is forced by family to eat meat, and likewise would never want to see an Omni child forced to be vegan. Mother is disgusting.

There must be some vegans out there that don't lord it over others, but I don't know any. I am such an unashamed meat eater that the few vegans I know won't eat with me. I'm fine with that. It's a diet. Once it becomes Who You Are, you're not that interesting to me.

Okay. No. This is ridiculous. She should be happy that her child was fed vegan meals whole staying there. It's ridiculous of her to try and impose her vegan lifestyle on these EIGHT people who CLEARLY have a meat filled diet. Next she's gonna want restaurants to not serve meals with meat while they are there 🙄

My mom's family had a yearly summer camping trip to a state park, and everyone was allowed to invite friends, who were allowed to invite friends. It was a giant week-long party. Once there was a vegetarian there who told my uncle not to cook meat. He was starting the coals, and he said, "oh don't worry, we'll do the veggies and the non-meat options first, so there won't be any cross-contamination." And she said "No, you don't need to use meat while my family is present. You can enjoy a meal that doesn't contain dead animals." He paused for a beat, smiled politely and said "I'll let you know when the coals are ready for your soysages" he wasn't entertaining her crazy and he wasn't going to be mean about it.

I live in Pittsburgh PA and I am from middle of nowhere PA. I need to come to dinner OP. I got five venison backstraps and three venison roasts I will gladly bring! I also have a massive smoker and my husband works for a whiskey distillery. Let's get this party started! Vegans have their right to eat what they wish as do us that are not vegan. I love meat! So I eat meat! No, I'm not ok with how my meat at grocery stores are raised. That's why you buy co-op! Those are happy cows, pigs and chickens. The meat really shows a difference and tastes omg! I couldn't be a vegan ever but I really do respect those who do. I have friends who are vegan. Bean burgers aren't that bad guys! Not beef at all but not bad.

From the OP's description of "Sindee" it was fairly obvious that standing up to her is #1 on her list of "things" Never to say or do as she appears to be a female Alpha dog type, no pun intended (Not !). My Wife's sisterbecame a Vegan in her twenties and whenever she came to our Home to visit or for the 'Holidays', my Wife would prepare a vegan meal for her while we ate whatever we had planned for our holiday meal, such as turkey, ham, or corned beef for St. Patrick's Day, and never once were any problems encountered. However, when we went to her Home their was No expectation by us that she would be preparing Anything with meat or fowl in it since as I stated she is a "Vegan" and ergo we did not expect her to change her choice of Lifestyle just for us. At the same time she is a very easy person to get along with and is more than capable of subtly and politely establishing her boundaries or needs. Sindee should have approached a "Vegan" friend to care for her child.

It has nothing to do with dietary issues folks…this is entirely about control. Sindee is an extreme control freak an e pests everyone to fall in line. Unless it’s someone with dietary issues such as celiac disease or other food allergies, no one should adjust their entire menu for a guest unless they chose to do so to be nice.

"For free" is where I have a problem with this mom, in addition to the fact that she 'gets' to dump the girl on someone else for a week as if EVERYONE has a pause on parenthood. I have 4 children, with the exception of being in the hospital recovering from the birth of a baby, I can count on one hand how many days I was away from them. One night with the older two, when I visited my grandparents out of town. And 3 nights with the younger two, when their older brother graduated from Boot Camp, And their cousin came here to watch over them, for which she was paid for. No free care here. Parenting isn't like 'playing house' as a child, grow up and live your life as if no-one ever cares for your child--that's a 24/7 on you. Unless it's an emergency, You are on the hook for the care of your child, period. My sister was hit head-on by a drunk driver, she wasn't able to care for her two children for a time.( her hubby worked 2nd shift).

On the flip side of this vegetarian vs meat eaters, I was raised vegetarian, have had perfect health my entire life. There is plenty of protein in legumes, corn, soy, etc. And there is a significant market of vegan protein products available which I also consume in smoothies. My labs are superb, and I suffer zero consequences from my vegetarian diet. I am 85 years young.

Vegan here with a vegan kid. Our home is vegan, we ask guests not to bring in non-vegan foods. We provide nice, meat-resembling food for guests, try to make it close to what they normally eat, but if you want to eat meat while visiting, that won't happen at our place. But when we are the guests, the only thing we ask is that our food is vegan. We can cook or bring our own if someone isn't sure about it (like my 82yo grandmother), we can eat out to avoid cooking, too, but we realise we can't dictate what others eat in their homes. Some go vegan or vegetarian for the meals we eat together, some have meat right there on the table, we don't say anything if it's not our home.

First cousin, I need to know the reason you did not include a picture of the child's meal with your bear steak picture. That would have been a good idea. NOW, mom if you ask someone to do YOU a favor don't try TO CONTROL the situation. As far as you being told "no" you are a spoiled nasty woman-child. Get over yourself, you are not know-all be- all. Who is she to accuse you of forcing your values onto her child when she is doing the exact same thing to her whole family by just telling them what they’re allowed to eat and not eat. Just because she’s the mother in the household does not give her the right to tell every other individual in that household what they are and are not allowed to eat. And still you respect her choices when you’re babysitting for free and that’s how she returns the respect by snapping on you. Her husband needs to grow a backbone and tell her to shut the hell up

If she don’t like it then she can learn to take her child on vacation with her just like most parents do. If you are that particular about what is around your child then keep them with you. Don’t ask a family member to watch your child for free for a week. feeding a family of 8 is crazy expensive. We have 5 of us and groceries aren’t cheap. Adding another mouth to feed and with dietary restrictions is costly. You at least have the respect to feed the child what they’re used to eating. Her being family she should have enough trust in you to know you’re not gonna force your values onto her child like that.

Poor OP will likely have ta deal w/ this idget as long as Hal stays w/ her. One o m' kids is vegan as are some o m' long- term friends. We get on fine. When dining @ their houses I eat what's prepared & have found the food delicious. It's an opportunity to educate m'self & add new things to m' own recipe box. When I host, I fix several vegan dishes because they're m' peeps & I love them. This isn't about vegans. It's about a**holes.

OMG! your menu sounds divine! Even the vegan breakfast sounds great, you are such nice person to do that for the little girl. and it sounds like you try to source some of your meat from hunting, good on you! You're right about factory farm eggs - they aren't as tasty as home grown. I emigrated some years back, and there is a noticeable taste difference between American factory meat and the home grown meat here. Never had bear meat, but over here they will roast an entire pig on a spit or in a lovo pit (especially wild pigs that they hunt) and that's utterly delicious.

There appear to be a lot of self-righteous vegans out there who think everyone who isn't vegan is a murderer. LOL! If they only realized that attitude brings on the "I'll show you" response from most people and they'll sit there eating a juicy steak about a foot from their face. Also, how does a vegan boy learn to trap, cook and survive in the wild without eating meat? What does he trap? Dandelions?

I don't get that mentality at all. My sister & her family are vegan, which I respect. When I had family dinners I usually made one of two dishes: build your own Greek salads (greens, veggies, olives, feta, salami, etc) with hummus & pita bread OR Spaghetti Bolognese (my recipe is amazing!) but with the sausages on the side, really good rustic bread & vegan butter as a choice (we carnivores prefer Kerrygold Irish Butter). I usually made a tomato bruschetta & roasted garlic as well. Nobody was offended and NOBODY went hungry.

These vegan parents are insane! When these kids get older, they are going to make their own choices about eating meat or not. It is very considerate for the people watching the kid to prepare particular meals for them, and it would be totally different if they had offered me to the kid, but that's not the case. My niece was being raised by Latter-Day Saint grandparents, and I had no clue about them not eating pork, and I think catfish not other fish, because they are considered unclean meat. I think it's bs, but that's up to them. My niece ended up eating all kinds of meat that she wanted LOL, but I didn't know and had ham for dinner when she was staying with us one weekend and they told me, and I apologized, and never gave her pork again when she was staying with us.

So the camp that teaches them fishing, hunting and trapping is totally ok to send the other kid to but not a house full of non vegans? What about schools? Is she also saying the schools can't serve meat to other kids bc her stupid life choices? People are wild. Her kids and husband are not vegans by choice either. The husband still eats meat. How much do you want to bet those kids will no longer be vegans when they are out from under their psycho mom's thumb?

If this was just a for a few days and the concerned parent (Sindee) had a proper conversation in advance about it, this may not be so unreasonable. But expecting an entire household to change their diet for an extended period of time without good and thorough communication beforehand is absolutely unreasonable. Especially because the reason would be 'parenting beliefs' and the OP surely has plenty of those also - and six children present to apply them to.

I'm vegetarian and I would never. I do insist on no meat in MY house however. I let some "friends" live with me for a year and a half for free. That was all I asked, any meat only be cooked on the grill outside, and no keeping meat in the fridge or cooking it indoors. they didn't listen. Long story short, that's not why I kicked them out, but boy did it make that decision a little easier. But I would never insist on the same in someone else's house. In fact, my sister tries to go out of her way to not cook meat in her house if I'm there. Last week bil wanted ribs. He was kind enough to open all the windows to vent heavy smells, but I kept telling them that it was fine, they don't need to change their diet or cooking habits for me in their home. And when they come for the 4th, I just ask that to they bring any meat they want to cook on the grill.

I was vegetarian for the last four years, but recently, I didn't have to be vegetarian, and during that time I found the love of my life. His parents fixed me food I will eat, but I never expected them to eat things they fixed for me. I mean if this was a rule ahead of time for everyone to be vegan while living in the house then I would do it just so there wouldn't be drama.

Ngl it *is* a little rude to cook meat in this situation....rude to the kid, who may not really be interested in a vegan lifestyle but is forced into it by mom. That didn't seem to be the mom's reasoning though. That said, he is watching over the kid free, only reason i say this is the kid can't make their own choices like that.

After the break-up (on good terms), I did miss their intelligence and good nature. I also missed the vegan cake at the Christmas family reunion - it was delicious.

Hey, can you give me advice on finding humanely raised meat? I'm like you, I want to eat meat, but I don't like the cruelty of factory farming. But I don't know where to start to find humanely raised and slaughtered meat that isn't crazy expensive.

I've been a vegan for a long time. None of my friends or family members are vegan, we eat together and enjoy each other's company all the time. I mind my own plate. That was very sweet of you to watch her and it sounds like you made her some delicious vegan meals.

People like Sindee are everywhere, have all kind of names, sexes, religion, ethnicity and food habits. One can NEVER do right by a “Sindee” because then one takes away their opportunity for drama. Perhaps the net can create a new persona like a “Karen” but for entitled people!? A “Sindee”! 😁

I really love vegans...you think they'd use their f*cking brains about the "animal free" lifestyle...there is and I repeat THERE IS NO WAY ON EARTH...to be completely animal free...the vegan lifestyle is a f*cking joke and an entitlement that no one deserves...fruits and vegetables are grown in dirt...when wild animals die they rot and become dirt...okay animal remains... You're house is full of all kinds of plastics made from you guessed it...animal remains...how bout all you stupid f*ckin vegan think deeper than the surface of what you believe and stand for and look at the bigger damn picture because you f*cks are blinded by ignorance

I am soo aggravated at vegan mom right now. She is having alone time with her husband and keeping her attention on her child that she intruded to her cousin. SHAME ON YOU, MOM. I would not be surprised if the next person you ask for a favor will tell you NO. You deserve that word.

OMG! your menu sounds divine!

Pretty sure my response would have been to continue cooking vegan for the cousin, but I'd go get about 10 lbs of bacon and basically have a few pieces cooking constantly for the remainder of her stay.
