Dying Cat Holds His Owners’ Hands On Their Final Trip

From the very first day your clumsy pet awkwardly runs around the house, to the last trip to the vet, the years with your furry friend are filled with unconditional love and joy (and some occasional poops.) If only we wouldn’t have to let them go… One Reddit user named abernha3 has recently said his bittersweet goodbyes to his 15-year-old cat Andrew on their final car ride. The Redditor posted 2 pics of Andrew holding his and his wife’s hands with his paw as they were driving to the vet and it has all the feels.

“Little Andrew was my junior,” abernha3 wrote. “He was 15 and a half and loved everyone, but just got old and sick over the last year. He purred everyday of his life and when he lost that, I knew it was time… He held our hands on his last trip to the vet. Little Andrew was much stronger than his mom and I.”

When I brought my ginger cat for his last vet visit and the start of his eternal sleep he knew it was the end. He looked at me and my mother with a very concentrated look, like he tried to take a mental picture of us. Then the vet did the first shot (the one to make him sleep) and he put his head on my arm while I petted him and he purred until he fell asleep. The rest is history but let's say that he left this Earth peacefuly and I felt so relieved in the end that he got a decent nice death instead of going somewhere in the nature where he would have ended alone. He knew it was his last trip but yet he did look at us like he always did, with love, I think he knew he was terribly ill and his purrs made me wonder if maybe he wasn't grateful we didn't let him die naturaly like a vegetable. Another thing is that now I know exactly what vets do when we bring them our friends for one last shot, I know it's not violent, it's peaceful and calm.

We just had a farewell evening on Saturday for my best friends' kitty who was 16 and had to be put to sleep on Sunday. She had cancer, arthritis and renal disease. And for those who think the kitty looks healthy - they usually look okay. It's all inside and often not visible. Our friends' kitty could barely walk, but was still happy to have cuddles and smooches. Very, very sad and heart wrenching.

Know just how you feel. When we had to take our beloved 17 yr old puss Pye-Pye to the vet for the last time, I held him as you hold a baby - he loved to be held like that and get a tummy rub. He looked up at me and then at my husband as if to say, "It's OK." Then he looked at the vet with an "OK, I'm ready" expression and extended his paw to the vet for the injection.

We have been through this twice in our lives and it never gets easier. Our two rescue Manx cats, Mrs. Lunch and Mr.B, lived long, happy lives with us. Mrs. Lunch for 22 years and Mr. B for 19 years. But we could tell when it was "time" for each of them. The weight loss, the scrubbly fur, the diminished kidneys, the fragility. They kind of "told" us ,"it's time." We were able to sit with each, when it was time, in a quiet room at our vets, holding and cuddling each in a warm blanket, planting kisses on their wizened heads. We have 2 tiny wooden boxes with gold locks, containing their ashes. Two holes are in both our hearts. We shall never forget them. As time passed, we were able to find room in our hearts for two more rescues, along with a senior Pit rescue, and the love continues ... animals in your home equals a very happy home. <3 1934357_12...1ec8b7.jpg 1934357_122028761204_4579653_n-57be4081ec8b7.jpg

This made me cry. About 5 years ago, the day I had to put my beloved cat (whom I had for 18 years/grew up with since I was six) to sleep, he was so much stronger and braver than me. During the day, before our final trip to the vet, he looked at me as if trying to say everything would be alright. No matter how well you think you prepared yourself for this sad occasion, you never are.

So sorry for your loss. I have been through this several times in my life. Brandy lived to 17, Sampson was 15. I lost both of them in 2010 (metastatic cancer that had been previously resected but came back three years later) and 2012 (I found Sampson outside in 19 degree weather at 3 weeks old and he had epilepsy) respectively. Neither cats were predicted to live as long or as well as they did. The kindest thing you can do is let them go in peace when it is clear that nothing can be done to ease the suffering. I grieved for a year before I could even think about getting another baby. Take care.

Some illness are not physical. My cat looked very healthy when lying on his couch... but his brain wasn't working anymore. He had dizziness, he leant toward the right when walking, he made his needs on himself, etcetera. A stranger would have think he was perfectly fine if we had taken pictures of him. But once he would have spent 5 minutes with him he would have known this poor baby was at its limits. Don't judge on a few pictures, people tend to only take pictures looking good. I grew up with a cat around. His name was Thommy and he was such a sweetheart. He got run over by a motorcycle. And I actually saw it happen. I cried for years after that. Literally. Everytime I thought of him or saw a picture of him I cried. I was 11 or 12 when it happened. It was a seriously traumatic experience for me. I finally stopped crying when I was around 16 or 17 when my mom got 2 new pets. 2 dogs. Tyson and Jemie. Tyson died a few months ago. One day he went from his normal self to super weak in just a few hours. The only thing he did was lay down. He also had this look in his eyes that screamed "help me". So we went to the vet. After half an hour he was so weak he couldn't even stand up without help anymore. Turned out there was a tumor on his heart and it caused a tear. There was nothing we could do for him. So we had to put him down. Just like that. We were so unprepared for it.... losing a pet is really just like losing a family member. I still really miss them...

I think it is terrible to end an animal's life. If the cat is in old age, or sick, why not let him/her die naturally. You are playing GOD when you take it upon yourself to decide a death date. Humans take a lot of liberties with animals and its wrong. Did you ever consider how the cat would feel dying by the hands of a vet? Maybe the cat still woke up happy to be alive, maybe he still had a few simple pleasures to look forward to, maybe he had unfinished business with the cat next door. Who knows. Cats can't talk. If they did i don't think they would say "yes its my time take me to the vet's cold slab table and shoot me up!". You wouldn't pull the chord on a human life in the hospital would you? Why would you do this to an animal. They have feelings but they can't communicate to you what they want. Maybe he didn't want to go to the vet to die and he thought he would go home that day. This is very sad. Would you want this done to you? You can't speak, you can't say "no, stop!".

-Alisa, it is true we don't know what our pet truly wants, however I would think you would want your loved one or pet not to suffer with pain. I would want the suffering to end for myself or a loved one. My cat became sick with throat cancer, she started to suffocate, tongue out , blue, distressed and it was a horrible sight. A cat does not need to verbally communicate to me that it is suffocating. Would you rather nature take its course and have a pet die a painful death while you just sit and watch? Not me. my sweet cat almost suffocated at the end.We made it to the vet before she could suffocate a painful death. It was obvious to the vet that she had little time left so we made the hard decision to put our sweet cat to sleep with less pain, discomfort and some dignity. I do not regret helping her pass on.

What boggles my mind is people who do this think they are doing "not the easy thing but the right thing" by their animals. You don't know what the right thing is, and your vet doesn't mind sticking a needle through an animals heart pr by gas box. That is how they die! Would you like that for yourself?

This is way wrong. Civilisation at its finest hour. This is the first time I see pets killed because getting old and ill, and probably making a discomfort to its owner. No matter how finest is your thinking, simply this is wrong. I really don't know what is the saddest part here: human or pets.

When my cat became ill, euthanasia was the kindest thing for her. We thought we had resected all the cancer she had but the morphological type of cancer cells of a fibrosarcoma, even if one cell is left behind, it can spread again. We were able to give Brandy three more healthy years of live after that surgery before she showed signs of heart failure. We discovered the cancer had returned and invaded her heart. It would have been cruel to let her continue to suffer when she was clearly in great pain and having difficulty breathing. I had to say goodbye to a loved one who was part of my life from the age of 6 weeks old. She was 17 years of age when she passed. She was a beloved member of the family and no expense was spared in her care. Her cancer surgery alone was $6000.00 and required that a specialist surgeon come from another country to care for her.

Why did u kill your cat?? Couldn't you let the poor life die naturally? Would you cut the cord on a human in the hospital. Just because they are in pain doesn't mean their lives should be cut. They aren't humans, they can't speak for themselves. They can't say no please another week don't gas me I have unfinished business with the cat next door!! Wish more people would stop killing their animals and playing God.
