The brain is a truly fantastic thing. The same organ that’s capable of controlling a myriad of passive as well as active bodily functions, comprehending elaborately complex concepts, and providing a unique kind of sentience is also the organ that often slips us a dumb idea. Or two. OK, much more.

But, hey, not all ideas are dumb, despite you thinking so. A curious Twitter user by the name of Bijan asked the internet what’s the dumbest idea people ever had, but are nevertheless convinced it’d still make the world a better place for all.

I also think they should live on an "average" wage for a year or two so they understand what the average person/family have to go through.

Legalize weed across the states, tax it, and use that money to repair the roads. Call it Operation Pothole.

Well in Australia it is illegal to ask a breastfeeding mother to leave or move elsewhere etc. Doesn't matter if she is feeding in the middle of a shopping centre, a restaurant etc. From my observations, it seems that other women are the ones that complain about breastfeeding in public, a lot more than men do.

This one makes me so sad, especially because of how women and PoC are so much more routinely dismissed, leading to sometimes dire consequences.

That should be acceptable. HOWEVER, it should go both ways. I am tried of being polite while a cashier ignores me and gossips with a coworker or cops an attitude.

In the United States there is a large percentage of people who are incarcerated essentially for being poor. They couldn't pay a fine and then they get put in prison.... so.....

This one is terrible. But jail time and fines as a proportion of wealth - THAT I could get behind. Some Scandinavian countries do that for speeding and other traffic offences, I've heard. Makes so much sense. A standard fine is just a "fee to be an asshole" for a rich person.

Definitely. Fines should be proportional to your savings/income. Its not the same to pay 100€ if you are jnemployed and struggling than if you are the major.

What if they're not physically able to work 9-5? Do we clog the system and end up filling jails with people who aren't physically able to generate enough revenue to get out? Will women be paid better in prison than outside because getting food and shelter for free while earning a realistic wage isn't an insensitive for anyone to leave prison

In the US we have a version two versions of this. Version one is pay a lawyer $6.7 million dollars and you get out of jail for rape early. The other version is you are poor and sent to a privately owned prison who makes you work for subprime wages, if they pay you, that can add time when/if they decide to do that. The state of California pays the private prisons to make the prisoners fight wildfires for free. Said prisoners are then banned from paying firefighting jobs when released due to being a felon. Both versions aren't working well for us. In both versions you are charged for court costs already.

I think there's pending legislation that would let the prison firefighters work as firefighters upon release. It's way past time that they are given the opportunity; if they do their time, and literally put their lives on the line to fight wildfires, they deserve a chance at honorable work when they get out

Think this was called debtor's prison back in the day. It would certainly make an impact on the minimum wage arguments, iirc prisoners currently get extremely low wages for the work they do and use it to buy minor luxuries from the commissary. But how would you put a price on rape? How much is a black eye worth? And if time spent on a criminal's case determines their penalty, couldn't cops lollygag to extend the time people spend in jail? Who would handle the accounting to decide what crimes are worth?

Considering the prison gets to determine your salary, this just sounds even more like slavery than the modern prison industry.

I get what you are trying to say and it does make sense up to a certain point. Rich people should be stripped of their monetary amounts. But poor people already have nothing and a lot of times poor people get jailed when they really shouldn't. It will never be fair. Also what would you do with people who tortured someone? The idea of them getting getting whatever they dished out is good, but in reality, no, that's not what we want. And who would be willing to rape the rapist? Yea no, sorry, hard pass on this one

Actually, that's very similar to the system the Puritans in early New England had -- if you stole something, you'd have to pay back three times its value. If you couldn't afford that, you became an indentured servant for as long as it took to pay back the money.

No one has ever gotten sent to jail just for time. It ALWAYS comes with fines, extra costs, etc. I don't remember the place....(it was a blurb I read in passing in a waiting room) but somewhere on the planet, fines are calculated by the person's income. YES. There is also a huge problem in America with prison slavery, where we are packing the prisons with people just to get cheap labor.

I'm saying the same thing for years. If you beat someone, you pay the medical bill, and refund the company for their absence, if you break something, you pay for it and refund extra cost that the owner had ( ex. rent-a-car for the time broken car being repaired ). if you steal something, work until you pay everything you did steal and didn't return. Every wall street fraud would be a life sentence.

You would never reach the end of sentences with a system like that. If you factor in the cost of a prisoner i.e. housing, security, food, medical costs etc, then they could never earn enough per hour to cover this plus the cost of the crime and associated costs

Prisoners should work for the state to pay for the cost of living there. It varies in every country, but the amount of taxpayer money wasted on feeding/housing a prisoner is a lot, and it shouldn't come from our taxes.

In the US people make serious profit from the cheap work that gets done by prisoners. It motivates having high numbers of people incarcerated and is NOT a good idea.

Tim Robbins did exactly that in Shawshank for his crimes against acting in Top Gun. Admittedly, he didn't have a contract but I'm sure Red could have got him one.if asked.

That wouldn't actually help the world since some people get put in there for a mistake or because some girl accused them of something but later admitted that they lie

What we really need is equal punishment for both genders so the young girls who purposefully go after older men and then cry rape when said man doesn't give them what they want

It's certainly not that simple and the US isn't evenly split. Also many "red states" are only red because those in power are messing with election laws so the political leaning of the masses might be different. There are also plenty of conservatives in "blue states"
