The brain is a truly fantastic thing. The same organ that’s capable of controlling a myriad of passive as well as active bodily functions, comprehending elaborately complex concepts, and providing a unique kind of sentience is also the organ that often slips us a dumb idea. Or two. OK, much more.

But, hey, not all ideas are dumb, despite you thinking so. A curious Twitter user by the name of Bijan asked the internet what’s the dumbest idea people ever had, but are nevertheless convinced it’d still make the world a better place for all.

I also think they should live on an "average" wage for a year or two so they understand what the average person/family have to go through.

Legalize weed across the states, tax it, and use that money to repair the roads. Call it Operation Pothole.

Well in Australia it is illegal to ask a breastfeeding mother to leave or move elsewhere etc. Doesn't matter if she is feeding in the middle of a shopping centre, a restaurant etc. From my observations, it seems that other women are the ones that complain about breastfeeding in public, a lot more than men do.

This one makes me so sad, especially because of how women and PoC are so much more routinely dismissed, leading to sometimes dire consequences.

That should be acceptable. HOWEVER, it should go both ways. I am tried of being polite while a cashier ignores me and gossips with a coworker or cops an attitude.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but I do think that taxes should be completely transparent. And it should go towards what it's meant to go towards - in the UK we pay road tax, but im prepared to bet some of that money goes towards MPs expenses and PM vanity projects. Full accountability for how that money is spent is a better idea than letting someone with only a passing interest in politics saying "my taxes should go towards deporting anyone I disagree with!" (because you KNOW that's what will happen)

I agree. The food safety inspector and children's protective services shouldn't depend on people deciding they are sexy enough to deserve money.

This can be done in a tax system where you get to declare what you donate to charity and the State has to refund 60% of it to you. This way you make sure at least part of your tax money funds something that makes sense for you.

Already possible on Portugal, you can choose to donate 1% of your IRS to a non profit organisation of your choice

In Poland we do that, but only with 1% of the tax - we can choose one of eligible organizations or charities to fund with that 1% tax money.

But 'people' don't have sufficient knowledge of things. They only understand what they see on the surface. They don't know what goes into building and maintaining drainage systems, or any other infrastructure!

You sort of have that in Norway. The authorities have a list of good causes. If you give at least 500 NOK, you get tax deductions. And it has proven effect.

Maybe not for everything but I could see it working for some things. Maybe have an optional 'would you like to fund the military?' portion. If someone says no, the extra money goes either somewhere they allocate or it just gets spread across all the other bits.

I think another name for this is bribery. You're essentially bribing the road crew to put a speedbump in front of my house instead of having the neighborhood decide it would be better in front of the school.

This is 100% a bad idea! Most people don't have a clue of all the different places taxes go. Plus so many people would put it towards the same thing that you would forever have stuff going unfunded.

In Slovakia we can decide where 2% of our taxes go. More info is for example at https://www.welcometobratislava.eu/donate-2-percent-of-your-paid-tax/

That's basically how capitalism works, consumers decide what business get funded by buying their products. I don't know how well that would work for government functions.

It's certainly not that simple and the US isn't evenly split. Also many "red states" are only red because those in power are messing with election laws so the political leaning of the masses might be different. There are also plenty of conservatives in "blue states"
