The brain is a truly fantastic thing. The same organ that’s capable of controlling a myriad of passive as well as active bodily functions, comprehending elaborately complex concepts, and providing a unique kind of sentience is also the organ that often slips us a dumb idea. Or two. OK, much more.

But, hey, not all ideas are dumb, despite you thinking so. A curious Twitter user by the name of Bijan asked the internet what’s the dumbest idea people ever had, but are nevertheless convinced it’d still make the world a better place for all.

I also think they should live on an "average" wage for a year or two so they understand what the average person/family have to go through.

Legalize weed across the states, tax it, and use that money to repair the roads. Call it Operation Pothole.

Definitely, and for crying out loud ride in single file, not 2-3+ abreast.

2 abreast is safer. Single file and car drivers will squeeze past even when really unsafe to do so. Then swerve in when they realise not enough room.

And they have to pull over and let other traffic past if there are more than say six cars behind them (this is actually the law for tractors in Scotland).

I assume your plan also includes increased fines for drivers parking/standing in a bike lane, mandatory minimum fines for any driver or passenger "dooring" a cyclist they didn't check for before exiting their car, and an overall increase in bike lanes and paths in all cities.

I asked a cyclist why he was taking up one full lane of traffic and ignoring the bike lane, during rush hour. Both lanes of traffic and the bike lane were full. He told me it was faster to ride down the middle of one of the traffic lanes and it was legal. I asked if next time the traffic lanes were full, if I could use the bike lane for my SUV -- it would be faster. He threw a serious fit in CVS. Bicyclists do not understand respect. If you zip through intersections against the light, hitting pedestrians, and getting much too close to cars, others will see you as the problem. Throwing your bicycle at a car, as it were a car accident to make a point is extremely upsetting to others. Who is going to vote for pro-bike rules if this is how you treat others. Running a red light may be safe for you, but what about the collisions between the cars you cut off? Based on the actions of probably just a few riders, many people dislike them. Hit people with the right of way, then blame them?

OR - here's a radical idea: encourage drivers to cycle (when possible). It would help the environment, it would result in fewer road accidents, and fewer injuries/deaths to animals.

Better yet, you can't get car licence until you've done six months on a bike. Be exposed to the torrent of crappy drivers, then come home, hop on the internet, and witness said crappy drivers whine how it's always someone else's fault. https://www.sbs.com.au/news/the-feed/drivers-to-blame-for-4-5-accidents-with-cyclists-report-finds

I can't believe they don't already have to have insurance. Cyclists have killed people and caused accidents. They should be held to account for bad driving just like motorists are.

How many people have cyclists killed? If you cycle you are 15 times more likely to be killed than if you drive a car. Cyclists are held to account- just as car drivers are. There was a path we used to live by that was for cyclists and walkers. One day my three year old son was walking with us when a cyclist appeared around the corner at high speed and nearly ran him down. There are many cyclists that speed where they shouldn’t.

I agree. We ride a local trail that is bikes and pedestrians. It has a speed limit of 15 MPH. I'm not in shape to go much faster, but many do. They also stay 2+ abreast when passing other bikers or pedestrians. They don't use a bell or give a verbal warning when passing. SO irritating, and gives all of us bikers a bad name.

My grandfather was a man of one-liners. On this topic it was “insurance feels like a scam, until you need it.” Meaning if you get through your whole life of it always feeling like a scam you got out lucky cuz you never needed it. I was in a car accident once and needed it to the tune of about $20k, not a fun place to be.

If the police catch you they can demand your details and give you points and a fine if you have a driver's licence, and if you refuse to give your details they can arrest you for that... This would require enough police to be on the roads to be useful, and if they were on the roads, all the speeders, people with illegal tyres, and people with brake lights out because they don't understand what a handbrake is for, would moan about being "picked on"

Cyclists should never have an id plate or should never have to pay road taxes. Where i live, cyclist used to have to buy an id every year. Luckily they banned that law a long time ago. Why paying taxes for something that actualy healthy and good for the nature while King Car gets all the benefits. That being said, the law is there for everybody and also cyclist need to follow the law.

Cyclists already get fined for jumping red lights- just as cars drivers do. If caught. By this rationale pedestrians should also have an ID plate and horse riders. I think drivers of motor vehicles should have to progress onto bigger vehicles starting with a bike. We would all be safer that way.

What age? Registration for all bikes? What about offroad only bikes? Kids? Too many questions to implement. Also, there isn't a rule book for cycling, you can't assume that all cyclists also drive cars and know road rules. Most drivers clearly dont know them well enough as well.

And (at least in Germany) these groups of cyclists who are thinking they train for the Tour de France or something, ride on a street with a speed limit of 70 km/h and you can't overtake these groups. So you have to drive behind them at 35 km/h. This. This should be fined a lot harder.

If a cyclist wants to pretend that they're part of automobile traffic they should be held to the same minimums automobile traffic is held to. I'd love to see a cyclist maintaining a 45 MPH minimum on a 60 MPH indicated road.
