The brain is a truly fantastic thing. The same organ that’s capable of controlling a myriad of passive as well as active bodily functions, comprehending elaborately complex concepts, and providing a unique kind of sentience is also the organ that often slips us a dumb idea. Or two. OK, much more.

But, hey, not all ideas are dumb, despite you thinking so. A curious Twitter user by the name of Bijan asked the internet what’s the dumbest idea people ever had, but are nevertheless convinced it’d still make the world a better place for all.

I also think they should live on an "average" wage for a year or two so they understand what the average person/family have to go through.

Legalize weed across the states, tax it, and use that money to repair the roads. Call it Operation Pothole.

Well in Australia it is illegal to ask a breastfeeding mother to leave or move elsewhere etc. Doesn't matter if she is feeding in the middle of a shopping centre, a restaurant etc. From my observations, it seems that other women are the ones that complain about breastfeeding in public, a lot more than men do.

This one makes me so sad, especially because of how women and PoC are so much more routinely dismissed, leading to sometimes dire consequences.

That should be acceptable. HOWEVER, it should go both ways. I am tried of being polite while a cashier ignores me and gossips with a coworker or cops an attitude.

We have those in uk. When traffic is low- they will change to green by the time I get to them if there is no one going other way.

You don't have those in the US?!? In France they are pretty common, mainly when a busy street crosses a not so busy one.

I hate this. Some mornings I go in at 5 or 6. I ace just started running them. I'm not going to sit at a light for 3-4 minutes when I'm the only car on the road. Yes, I have written the city about it. More than once.

Its not pressure, it's called a loop, and it's wires detect the metal of the vehicles frame.

Many lights in the UK have pressure pads and cameras for traffic control, so it's already a thing here

Amen. Lived near a quiet intersection with the looongest light. Wanted to run it multiple times, but knew the police station was just around the corner so I didn’t dare. 😂

I was literally talking about this yesterday! Smart lights would be able to detect cars in the road, and change the lights to best suit the flow of traffic.

I sat at a light for 10 minutes one time and there was never a car in sight so I just ran the light and never did see it change behind me

I once sat at a light that never changed. We were going left. It was a suburban neighbourhood at maybe 10 pm. I got out, even pressed the button and waiting more. Never changed. We eventually just went...cause...wtf

They usually are after hours. They are pressure sensitive. During the day when there is traffic, they are timed.

All the lights in my town have sensors that sense if there's vehicle on that side. If it detect no vehicle, the light on that side wont turn green.

There are a couple of lights in my city where I swear it purposely keeps everybody there waiting and gives green to the directions where nobody is coming. These intersections also do not allow left turns without a green arrow, which I always have to wait a really long time for.

Lights around here are a little too touchy. They will change for one car almost immediately when they could have let that last car pass before changing. Feels good when it is in my favor, but not so much when I am on the side of "fewer vehicles though an intersection per hour."

On busy intersections in NZ lights use pressure sensors under the first car position in every lane to regulate changes.

In the Bay Area (Cali) they're mainly all street pressured. Whenever I go elsewhere, I'm so perplexed why it isn't everywhere.

Lights are put into one of two options. On demand or timed. During high traffic periods they are normally set on timed. If you are sitting at a light for long periods of time, it means the city or county has a lazy traffic engineer

I know of lights that are intentionally set in a way that traffic on one street stops when no one is coming on the cross street. When cross traffic finally comes, they have to stop while the people who had been waiting for no one gets to go, and remain stopped long afterward, until someone approaches again. It's just to slow people down. And I know of other lights that are intentionally timed so badly and shortly so that frustrated drivers run more red lights, generating revenue from tickets.

I'm not sure I understand this. Smart traffic lights over here have sensors, that means you can walk, cycle, drive through when there is nobody elke waiting, even if it isn't your turn. It reduces the time you have to wait, not add to it

Most of our transportation system (US) was designed to benefit oil companies. If you sell gasoline "stuck in traffic" is a good thing.

No. Smart lights are more expensive to install and maintain, but they do exist and there are gradually becoming more of them. They do have their foibles though - they tend to start to change just the last car approaches the line and then it's a case of should I stay or should I go!

It's certainly not that simple and the US isn't evenly split. Also many "red states" are only red because those in power are messing with election laws so the political leaning of the masses might be different. There are also plenty of conservatives in "blue states"
