The brain is a truly fantastic thing. The same organ that’s capable of controlling a myriad of passive as well as active bodily functions, comprehending elaborately complex concepts, and providing a unique kind of sentience is also the organ that often slips us a dumb idea. Or two. OK, much more.

But, hey, not all ideas are dumb, despite you thinking so. A curious Twitter user by the name of Bijan asked the internet what’s the dumbest idea people ever had, but are nevertheless convinced it’d still make the world a better place for all.

I also think they should live on an "average" wage for a year or two so they understand what the average person/family have to go through.

Well in Australia it is illegal to ask a breastfeeding mother to leave or move elsewhere etc. Doesn't matter if she is feeding in the middle of a shopping centre, a restaurant etc. From my observations, it seems that other women are the ones that complain about breastfeeding in public, a lot more than men do.

This one makes me so sad, especially because of how women and PoC are so much more routinely dismissed, leading to sometimes dire consequences.

I was dismissed as being mentally ill for 18 months, in which time I had become so unwell I could no longer support my own weight. I would vomit hundreds (no exaggeration) times a day. I knew there was something seriously wrong with me, but because of how I was treated I had almost resigned myself to the idea that I would only be proved right, that there was something wrong, at my post mortem. Luckily, one doctor went against everything the other doctors were saying and prescribed me medication. I now know if he hadn't, I would be dead. He risked his job to save my life. I'm unfortunately on steroids for the rest of my life, but even three years post diagnosis, I still find myself some days thinking 'maybe they were right, maybe it is all in my head' medical gaslighting does not get spoken about enough

i went to a doctor for my knees 3 years ago. she told me i was out of shape and making it up so i didn't have to run for field hockey because she "sees goalies all the time who do this". i went back 2 months ago and got diagnosed with severe tendonitis and osgood schlatters. i wouldn't have a 3 year old continuously irritated injury if she believed me before it hurt to walk. i cant play at the level i want to anymore because of her. :(

As someone who takes SSRI's it'd be great if the prescribing doctor had to take them and then stop taking them to see what it's like. More than once I've been told that a specific drug doesn't cause withdrawal issues when I am in the middle of said withdrawal symptoms. I'm 46 doctor and have been taking meds since my 20's-I think I know!

Oh god ssri and snri withdrawals are unbelievable right? I can feel it if I take my dose a few hours late. And once in hospital they didn't give me my pills for 6 weeks, and I ended up having 'locked in' syndrome after a coma. They finally realised, restarted my pills and on the third day I unlocked while I was sleeping coz I woke up and I could move! I can't believe they wouldn't take a med like that seriously in a hospital 🤦‍♀️ you're so right, if they knew just what it did to your mind and body they might not be so flippant

This so much. I have chronic pain and fatigue and a ton of chronic illneses. If I walk more than 2k steps a day (so about 30m counting from the moment I wake up) I have severe pain the next hours or days. My GP recommended me to "plan an activity a day, like doing grocieries or hiking". I just told her that walking the 15m up and down from the bus to her clinic brought me 3 days of severe pain. But sure lets go hiking...

Then my psychiatrist tells me that my pain is due to not exercising and i need to do more. After I tell her about all of this and how doing the very basic house chores already brings me pain. They both deserve to live like this for a month and see how much exercise they do. For me taking care of the house IS exercise.

"It is because of your weight. You need to loose some weight." "yeah, but only one knee hurts and it is exactly since the specific day of injury, when I fell down in the kitchen and end on floor with a leg in unnatural angle" "can you do a squat?" "yes, but the problem is not to bend it down, but straighten it-" "if you can squat, there is nothing wrong. you have to loose weight". - my first orthopedist without even trying to examine it.

As someone with 2 chronic diseases, I agree, but at the same time don't agree. I agree, because it took doctors 3 years to diagnose me. One of my diseases (CRPS) is the highest (pain-wise) at the McGill Pain Scale. Because it took so long to diagnose me I would have wanted they felt what I felt, so they knew I wasn't exaggerating and it wasn't in my head. But on the other hand, the pain I am in 24/7 from both diseases, I don't even wish on my worst enemy. Not even for a second. So yeah, there's that. But I really agree with the idea!

Better yet, let's make them bleed for as long as some of us have had to. I'd kill to make them experience a 10 month period like I had. Maybe then they wouldn't call it "normal."

I had a woman doctor dismiss my pain for a year and 10 months. finally I'd had enough and insisted she send me for an x-ray. I needed a new hip just as soon as a surgeon could get me scheduled. I ended up in a wheelchair within 2 weeks.

YES. This. Took me so long to convince them to do an MRI to find 2 cyst type things IN my spinal cord. Even then, took me a while to find a doc who knew what they were and didn't dismiss them as "one of those things". I told one that the pain I felt was period pain but in my limbs. He said that wasn't a thing. I then saw a female doc who was like well of course, you're describing nerve pain. 🤦‍♀️

Sigh. No, I don't have to feel your pain to know that it is real. In fact, it does hurt me (sorta) every time I take the time to carefully explain to a patient that psychosomatic pain is real pain, it is just not pain caused by a physical cause, but by the brain trying to substitute a problem it knows how to solve for one it doesn't (i.e., dealing with pain instead of dealing with chronic stress, family/relationship issues etc.). They usually never show up again, complain that "the doctor thought I am crazy!" and keep hopping doctors until they find one who is annoyed or busy and gives them the opioid/CT scan/surgery they think they need.

I was sick for almost 8 years, (debilitating pain) and extremely ill, before I was finally diagnosed. I was fired from my job and labeled a whiner by most of my family and the numerous doctors that I paid to get a diagnosis from. My husband and I thought that I would die before we finally found out what was wrong with me. I have an auto-immune disease that no one learns about in medical school. When they do teach about it, what they learn is WRONG so they tell you that there is no pain associated with it lol. My husband had to bathe and clothe me for months in the very beginning because my muscles were frozen in pain. I think they need to do some more studies. I'm in a large group with other people who share the same disease and they all suffer the same way that I do. Stupid f*****s.

Most people with severe chronic pain actually UNDER report pain when using a 1-10 scale. They base it on a daily baseline, which can lead to under reporting pain by 2 - 3 points! I always try to think "what would someone who NEVER felt my pain say this pain was", giving me a more accurate base of thought. My pain reporting became more accurate, was taken more seriously, and I started getting accurate treatment for it! I had vertebrae rubbing together without a disc, and would describe it as 4-6, realizing later that people would call it 8!

Several things. First, pain is not a contest and not all pain is felt the same universally. If someone says something hurts enough to affect how they live, believe them. Second, medical offices are overbooked with patients so the doctor does not have the time/energy to spend looking for the underlying cause. They pick the easiest cause to find and move on. Third, because medicine is so expensive in the US, people hold off until its unbearable. The doctor then dismisses the pain because if it was that bad, you would have come earlier. We need to remember doctors are human and make mistakes like the rest of us. #2 and #3 make that much more likely. We need to really work on fixing them so a doctor can take the time to come to earlier and better conclusions before something minor becomes major. Lastly, often the diagnosis is partially right. My pain got better when I started moving more. I went from an 8 to 5 and the lost fat allowed them to find the real reason I hurt.

The pain scale is stupid and completely subjective, I limped out of hospital on a broken knee to hear a guy standing at the counter vaguely holding his back that his pain was "definitely a 10". Hmm...
