I Asked 16 Artists To Draw My Portrait Photos In Their Style
628Kviews
I am an experimental portrait photographer. I use vintage lenses, DIY lenses, and weird techniques to create portrait images. I love to create images that bring a new way of looking at the world. Also, I am a YouTuber who creates videos explaining my experiments and discoveries and I really enjoy doing collaborations with other artists that are not photographers.
Some months ago, I was scrolling through Instagram and discovered the #DrawThisInYourStyle trend, a kind of challenge between illustrators that recreate other artists' drawings in their own style. I was amazed by the quality of the art I saw and I was wondering how I could collaborate with all those amazing artists, as I was not an illustrator but a photographer.
I decided to first contact an illustrator asking if they wanted to redraw one of my portraits in their own style. I told her that I would create a YouTube video about the process and create the first episode with a team of my favorite artists. She said yes and the result she sent me was so amazing that I started to contact every illustrator I liked on Instagram. One month later, I had 16 participants and I had a great looking video of their processes.
The #DrawThisInYourStyle challenge has been SUPER fun and I'm glad I was able to organize this cool collaboration with all those amazing artists. Check the video regrouping process for the 16 artists! I hope you'll like it.

Looks too different from the model. They look like different people in the same pose.
What an egregious dearth of style. What a sad consistency of inability to capture character, lack of insight, variety of technique or viewpoint. Next time ask one artist to draw it 12 times.
That is what strikes me too .. most of the pictures are just cute-ish faces which carry absolutely no resemblance to the model and artists were unable to capture the uniqueness or character of the models. I am a bit old school about portraits - for me the highest art is to capture the real person, his/her character, expression,...
Agreed, only one image (the first one with the black shirt and jacket) managed to recreate the model accurately.
Well said.
I also agree. It would have been really neat to use one picture of one model (like the very first one) and then have 12 different artist created their renderings.
I would have liked to see one picture by 12 artists. So you can really see the difference between the artists
I was really confused by this post. A photographer superimposes a bunch of weird things over his photos. Then asks all these artists to work for free by copying his photos? The result is a lot of cartoons, most of which look nothing like the photographic models. I'm not sure what I'm supposed to have gained from this. Am I just too dumb to understand the artistic-ness or something?
I love this post. The photographer is great and the artists he chose to draw his portraits are great. All of the models this photographer uses are wonderful as well. They are all stunning and possess a certain unconventional kind of beauty.
i wouldnt call it "unconventional"
“You know what you would look like if you were prettier? I mean... you know what you would look like if you had bigger eyes and lips and we got rid of that big nose of yours?!” - every artist on this post. She should be offended that not one of these artists thought her real features were good enough.
Exactly my thought. What is with almost every artist in the article that they end up with the same woman on every picture regardless how the model looks. Just big eyes, unrealistic small mouth and nonexistent nose .. ugh. I love portraiting that captures the person as it is, this feels boring to me.
It’s so boring and it’s so widely accepted that it seems extremely unhealthy. These artists didn’t give a fuck how the actual human was treated or represented. They just all pretty much insult the models by making it seem as if their actual features aren’t good enough. You have to have anime eyes, pillow lips and an upturned, narrow nose. And it’s every article on bored panda where women are drawn. Every single time.
Why do you think they drew with that assumption in mind? It's their art styles and how they wanted to draw it.
Because that’s literally what they did. Do you see all the pictures with huge lips and eyes that this girl definitely does not have? That’s how you know they drew with that in mind. Coincidence how literally ALL of the art styles make the women have bigger lips and eyes and a smaller nose. Ask this question instead: why is it that there’s zero variation?
A lot of these artists have fantastic styles, I really like them. Thanks for posting this, I will definitely check out their other work.
Most of the eyes in the drawing doesnt even look like the person Wth!?
Would have been neat to see the same portrait done by each artist in their style.

Great job, dude! Those are really awesome.
Thank you
Despite my comments sounding like criticism I actually enjoyed the drawing styles. I just liked a lot of the photographs more. If separate from the inspirations I would rave a bit more. Or maybe if they were original characters.. I don’t mean to sound so pessimistic I promise!!
Yeah I was confused and let down, I thought he was going to ask 12 different Artist, with totally different styles to interpret the SAME photo, so you could see how 12 different Artist, with different view points and styles, can interpret, and conceptualize different art from the same subject, I think that would have been more interesting, rather that looked like the model or not, I find this rather pointless really
I didn't realize this post was so old...... hahaha
Did you pay them?
wow so sad there's so much hate on this, I love the styles of these digital artists. It was meant to be in their own styles so I see why they aren't "realistic". I love them!
They all look computer generated
To much negativity in these comments. Love the art. Don’t scroll down.
So many negative comments. The idea was, the artists vision of the already amazing art. You're like "theat doesn't look anything LIKE the photo!" "I hate this" It's not supposed to! And if it inspired an emotion from you, then it's art. Period.
Honestly the photographs and models are special enough on their own that the artists’ renderings take away from them in my opinion.
keep it up thanks
they r really cool
Way to scam 16 portraits out of artists! Did you tell them to do it for the “exposure”?
It's a DrawThisInYourStyle Challenge. Those are really popular amongst (amateur) artists, because in these challenges they are allowed to "steal" someone else's art ideas and use it in their own drawing. Normally, if you would use someone else's concept and composition and colouring etc. without asking permission, you would get heavily criticized, but in these challenges the original artist (the photographer in this case) basically says: if this work of mine inspires you, I give you permission to copy as many aspects of the original as you like. So it's not just about exposure, it's also free inspiration.
This post is great! <3 BP more like this pleaseeeee
Correct me if I'm wrong but all pics are computer generated, no? So no artist "drew" the portrait photos, I was expecting completely different results, not that I don't like these. Opened my eyes to computer generated pics, if I am correct that they all are.
Have you ever heard of this nifty little devise called a DRAWING tablet
They all look like crap to me.
