It is hard to be fair and treat everyone equally, because it is part of human nature to be biased. We treat the people who we like better and we are not that available to people who we don't find dear to us. So double standards are practically inevitable, but they often can be so pervasive and life-changing that they must be dealt with.
Reddit user SecretSquirrel2204 asked people “What is a double standard that really bothers you?” and there were a lot of different answers. Some people gave very specific stories of how different genders are treated differently, others were pointing out the more broad issue of hypocrisy and everything in between.
Do you agree with the answers Redditors gave? What would you add to this list? Let us know in the comments and upvote the double standards that seem the most unfair to you!

My wife died when my kids were 11 months and 2 years old. When I took the kids to the grocery store, without fail I’d get comments like “oh daddy’s day out, huh?”
Breaking point for me was taking them out to eat, I sat there for 20 minutes after being seated, and finally the server came back to the table and goes “did you want to try ordering for the kids or are we still waiting for mom?”
I straight up said to her “well we’d be waiting a long time because she’s dead. I don’t need to try I can order just fine”
You were absolutely right to say that and I hope she learned from it.
Black people can't be racist.
I had a horrible female boss and any time she had a difficult meeting with a man, she would just say afterwards that he must have a problem with women. ‘No, witch. You’re just horrible to work with’.

Definitely. My partner had a excoworker from Congo and he would proudly say how "white bitches are good for f*****g but you need to marry a black woman to keep the race".

I've had several arguments about this, I'm just told whites are privileged & they are not, therefore they can't be racist. They're even racist towards other black people over the other black person's complexion (very dark or almost looks white), but this part was actually explained to me by a black person.
Think of it less as a privilege to be white, but as an advantage. Like having wealth at birth. You didn't earn the money. You didn't ask for the money, but you have this monetary advantage over the rest of the country, but believing that everyone has the same access to money as you do is what is damaging. It's important for us to recognize that we have these advantages and it is not an equal playing field. That's what it is like being white. We have an advantage by birth alone. Statistics have consistently proven that white people are given more advantages and opportunities and even less crime sentences than Black people.
Load More Replies...My cousin is half white, half black. When he got married to his fully black wife it was her family that had more problems with accepting him. His white part of the family not at all. I guess you'll find some sort of discrimination in all cultures, races and different income classes. Even intelligence doesn't spare humans from being racist :-(
Some of the worst racism I noted as a teacher was black on black or black on white.
People are flawed, they have thoughts and opinions. Race and who they identify as has nothing to do with it.
This one is so true. I am white and I’ve had someone call me a stupid white boy so I calmly said that it was racist and the guy said “dude blacks can’t be racist to whites it just don’t work that way”
Lol a lot of American Black ppl are incredibly racist. They are raised that way. They are even racist against other blacks of different skin tones and different cultures.
There's a video called, "What are White People Superior At?" (can't remember the exact name) It was racist against whites. Fortunately, it received 20 times more dislikes than likes.
We need to work toward a society that is colorblind, and right now we are actively trying to divide all people, regardless of race.
Being colorblind means you are ignoring the lived experience of people who have been discriminated against. You cannot ignore that slavery existed until 1865, Jim Crow in law until 1964, and housing red lining until the mid-1970s. Never mind that many Jim Crow and housing discrimination items still come up, including some perpetrated by former president Donald Trump. One cannot pretend to be colorblind in America until the sins of the past are openly and honestly discussed.

You'd think they'd be past that considering how much racism they themselves have been on the end of.
That's because racism isn't a societal problem. It spills over onto society, but it is a heart problem.
Load More Replies...Oh boy. Gather ‘round, Karens. “Racism” implies oppression. Black (and other minority) people legit don’t have the means to oppress anyone in North America, they’re still trapped under the big ol thumb of colonial oppression, the kind many (mainly white) people don’t see at all. Can a black person be discriminatory? Hell yes. But as a white woman I can’t confidently say “this black person is being racist to me,” it feels soooo so wrong. Especially given white colonial North American history. A lot of North Americans don’t understand that nuance though. Black people can absolutely be rude and discriminating if they feel like it, but of course so can any people, and we white kids need to get over the fact that WE’RE NOT OPPRESSED GUYS (plus wtf, black people were treated like s**t and now they and their children have to deal with all the aftermath by themselves instead of us taking responsibility for our ancestors shitty behaviour and taking responsibility of the bullshit our grandparents caused them, just because “this trauma is yours now just deal with it”? They have to deal with what happened but we get a free pass just because “wasn’t me personally?” K I’m kinda tipsy I should get off the comments section 😂 huge difference between racism and discrimination is my point
I wouldn't have explained it better! That was my point too but i failed to explain it or people don't want to hear just downvote to oblivion cause they assume you like discriminations!

Can we correct this n say "everyone can be racist" I feel like this is only calling out one group of people for something that literally every race is guilty of. Some more than others.. n some more f****d up than others... but it still happens. It also happens within these communities too. Colorism is also another thing that needs to be talked about more.

Oh yes they can like anyone can. My track record for getting racist black people banned or off to FB jail? 87 this year. Call me white at your peril. I’m Sicilian not white
No lies, I work with a black woman from North Minneapolis, and she refuses to help other black women! And I get it, because I e overheard some conversations between her and other black customers. We work in a deli that serves fried/grilled/spicy chicken. She asks said customer which one they want, and gets told, "You know which one I want, Sista!" My coworker replied, "No, SIR, I do not because I don't eat chicken." He actually complained to our store manager that she was racist toward him. Assumptions are f*****g bullshit:
most of the time, it's not black people being "racist" to white people, it's black people being racist to other groups, such as Asians and Latinx people
That's a pic of Ta-Nehisi Coates, how the heck did he get thrown into this? 😂😂😂

Load More Replies...Most of you all commenting are white. You are on the outside looking in. This statement is actually true. It never benefits Black people to be racist because Black people and other people of color that are non white are on the lowest pestal in this society. We don't and can't benefit from being racists so we don't do it. To once again educate white people as all Black people have to do, as a Black person (female) and a sociology major, I can tell you almost all Black people are mean to all races but so are White people. Black people and people of color are indeed prejudice against other races including their own. Prejudice is as far as it goes. Black on Black prejudice is what the Black community is known for doing to each other and so we do it to other races and ethnicity. Black people don't trust white people because of history that they still continuing to white wash. As for other races Black use the cultural stereotypes in other race and ethnic backgrounds that they use on themselves for jokes which most of the time isn't funny but again it's us being prejudice. A difference from white people who are indeed racist (not all of them) and it shows whenever someone in with melanin skin walks past their pale skin. White people have privilege and they have terrible racial notions about every races and ethnicities despite not knowing much about them. For one not eveyone shou lol d have to be forced to learn English you can also learn their language too. And stop culturally appropiating things to make money off of it like Dishiki's, kimonos, Saris's, lehenga's, dupatta scarfs, hijabs, sherwani's, Indigenous headdresses, Egyptian headdresses, and Rastafarian print, you don't even know how to wear them correctly, let alone when. It's disrespectful.
Only white people can be racist as we have nothing to "Sing the Blues about" as George Carlin said. All other races should know what its like to be treated like s**t for no good reason and in turn not be like White people. as a white male when I was a teen I found it really weird and inappropriate that one X-men comic had a black character who HATED mutants, and even as a teen I felt that he should be able to sympathize with them for being treated different because of how he looks.
There are multiple definitions of racism: Definition of racism 1: a belief that race is a fundamental determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race 2: the systemic oppression of a racial group to the social, economic, and political advantage of another People who say blacks can't be racist think of definition 2
When people of color are racist its internalized racism. When women are sexist, its internalized sexism.
This statement is in itself racist by marking a difference between people based solely on genetics. Idiocy.
There are too many people who don't understand the difference between racist / sexist acts, and institutionalized racism and sexism. White people in the vast majority of the world cannot experience institutionalized racism, because it doesn't exist. However, white people can experience individual acts of racism. Same goes for men and sexism. The comments on Buzzfeed are a prime example of both of these.
Racism is the cause and discrimination is the affect. They go hand in hand.

Yeah, this is awful. I dont pick up things in my head very quickly. Sometimes it seems that I'm quite dense and I may ask questions with obvious answers that aren't obvious to me. Not trying to be difficult, Im trying to be sure I have a grasp on the idea before I execute the action.
Projects and initiatives for the betterment of society (social safety net, healthcare, superannuation, infrastructure) 'drain the system' but when it's time to bail out large corporations, increase wages of already rich and successful people tenfold, or pay someone large amounts for a dodgy little scheme on the side, there's seemingly endless cash lying around. I grew up in a country that does not encourage the use of personal vehicles. There is a lot of public transportation available. As a result, I have very little mechanical expertise. My white girlfriend, who grew up in the country and whose father is a mechanic, has spent her entire life tinkering with automobiles. When we go to an auto parts store to get something, the salespeople never say anything to her. Even if they ask me a question and she answers, they continue to talk to me as if she doesn't exist. It's unbelievable. They don't seem to notice her. She's gone to job interviews for mechanical jobs where the interviewer asks her extremely simple and dismissive questions because they don't believe she can understand what they're asking.
Yep, in the U.S., it's usually guys that do the repair work on cars. Not saying it's right, but that that's how it is. And I think women can be great mechanics. I guess they aren't taught about it. I think that if you're going to drive, you should have to take a mandatory class on basic vehicle care and maintenance. Everyone.

A lot of people think that being anti-white is a way to be anti-racist. That itself is literally by definition an act of racism.
And so many people think that the way to be anti-racist is to attack their like-minded peers over trivia, and ignore the real racists. F*****g weenies, all of them, going after the safe and easy targets while congratulating themselves for being "activists", and ignoring the real problem.

In the U.S. you're required by law when you turn 18 to sign up for Selective Service because according to the government, you're considered an "adult" who can be drafted into the military at a time of war if needed.....
......but you're not allowed to purchase or consume alcoholic beverages until you're 21 because you're too young otherwise.
So at 18 I can legally be forced to go overseas and partake in combat where I can get my arms and legs blown off and/or end up with severe PTSD for life or even killed.....but God forbid I want to enjoy a cold beer after work ?

I'm still in awe over the double standard with which people treat the credibility of information. If it confirms their world view, they're happy to accept extraordinary information from partisan blogs, tabloids, and columnists with no further confirmation. But if it challenges their worldview, good luck convincing them of anything. I argued with a dude who decided to trust the Washington Examiner's outright lie about the IRS bank reporting proposal. I gave him a link to the ACTUAL PROPOSAL published on the Treasury's website, pointed him to the EXACT page that details the proposal, and he still dismissed the information as partisan deceit.

I used to work at a place where the importance hierarchy was:
people with kids
married people (no kids)
single people
At that time, we were meeting to discuss a big release with a lot of things happening. The head honcho said "Ok, DulceEtBanana will come in at 230am to starts {something}" and moved on to the next item.
I said "wait wait how is that my job with no discussion?" "Because it's either you or Dave and Dave's got 2 kids. You're single, of course it's to you."
I pointed out Dave's kids would be sound asleep at 2:30am and "Maybe I should find a kid who wants in on the deal" and got written up for it. F**k them, they went out of business a year later anyway.
Yeah, single folk shouldn't have to suck it up and take the crap just because they are single/childless. They still have lives and families. Just because they haven't produced crotch goblins doesn't mean they don't have things they need to care for or just want to do.
Why can’t I, a male in my 20s, be a babysitter? I love kids and am great with them, but exactly zero people take me seriously (no replies back to public ads and zero friends consider it anything more than a joke of an offer).
A double standard that affects me constantly is it’s socially acceptable to ask people “Why’re you so skinny” but it’s totally unacceptable and inappropriate to ask people “why’re you so fat?”
I myself as a male am called skinny and have been called Anorexic, unknown to people their are reasons I am the size I am due to medical issues.
I’ve had times where people who were fairly overweight would ask me “Man you’re so skinny” and I constantly think in my head what would happen if I said “Man you’re so fat”
You should say it not just think it. And when they say "Wow that's inapopriate" just say "Yeah that's true, commenting on people's weight IS inaporpriate, i'm happy your realise it"

Men can't fight back against a woman who is literally beating them.
I am a woman and believe in true equal rights. If a woman hits a man, he should 100% be able to defend himself and hit her back. Woman should not get p u s s y passes just for being a woman - we also need to learn how to act right.

That everyone else is allowed to state their opinion, but I’m just supposed to sit there and keep my mouth shut.
If *everyone* treats you this way... there are a few things you can do. First, you need to stop and understand what the word "opinion" means. "I hate raisins in cookies" is an opinion. "the world is flat" is NOT an opinion, it is a falsehood that defies facts and reality. Second, you should stop and think "is this an educated opinion", i.e. do you have any actual evidence to back it up, or do you just "feel" that this is the right opinion. Thirdly, you need to consider that maybe your opinion just sucks and is offensive, and people are in no way obligated to listen to you insult their values. Finally, if you determine that yes, it is actually an opinion, and yes you have evidence to back it up, and no you are not being a jerk... well then it is time to get new friends, because these ones don't respect you.

Compare the media wording when it comes to child sexual abuse. Man rapes a girl, it's rightfully referred to as rape. But a woman rapes a boy? It's just sex. No crime here. "Teacher has sex with her five year old student." Hell, one little boy was even sued for child support after his rapist fell pregnant.

I have worked or been in the bar a couple of times during a Chippendale's type display. If men behaved like women do at these shows, they would be bounced IMMEDIATELY.

I showed up a few min early for a dentist appointment. I was told at the counter that it had been canceled (I don't remember the reason). I asked for the $75 fee if less than 24 hours notice is given. The person at the front desk thought I was joking.
Load More Replies...Soldiers that come home from war can suffer PTSD...but kids who were bullied and traumatized in school just need to get over it as adults. Sorry for making you feel uncomfortable about harassing me, shoving me around and making my life a living hell to the point where I was literally sick to my stomach about going to school everyday and I realize you may be a different person now, but that does not excuse you from apologizing for the horrors I had to face at your hands. Own up to what you did to help the people that you hurt. It can go a long way to repairing some of the damage you caused.
One I hate is: no makeup = you look ill but makeup = you look fake
You can't be even 1 minute late for a doctor's appointment, or they'll cancel, but when you get there, you'll sit on the waiting room for hours.
I’m thinking of changing my name on job applications to something else. It’s already hard enough to gain the hiring manager’s attention. But when your name is Karen, they run like their hair’s on fire 😭
All people are capable of being racist regardless of skin tone. That means everyone, even black people. People are all assholes.
Privileged parking spaces. Everyone knows you can't park in the blue space without having some credentials. But at the hardware store there is special parking for vehicles with trailers. These are double wide, double long parking spaces. You can guess how often these get respected. 🙄
