Equality is humanity's Holy Grail, the cornerstone of most value systems, but we have yet to reap all of its rewards. Sure, our society has tremendously evolved for the better during the last, say, 100 years, but a long journey is still ahead, and the vast array of double standards that still divide people to this day highlight this perfectly.

The double standard definition states that it is a rule or a principle applied to different people or groups. The most prominent case of double standard examples to this day come from gender equality. What's usually okay for men, is not acceptable when done by women. Starting with beach attire and ending with lady bosses, society finds unnecessary ways to chime in about what's wrong and what's right.

Bored Panda has compiled a list of insightful illustrations that uncover the uncomfortable truth behind some everyday life situations, and it's (mildly) disturbing how accurate they are. Judging by these images, it's clear that sometimes terms like 'gender equality' are reduced to no more than a catchphrase. Scroll down to see the proof for yourself, and vote for your favorites.

So damn true. One time I overheard my coworkers talking and these two guys were discussing about "girls who put makeup are so insecure, it's like they couldn't even go out without makeup if their life depended on it". Then another day in the same week, I was so tired I decided not to put makeup. The very same guy saying this was like "omg what happened to your face?". Yeah no wonder why women are "so insecure"...

If you're a true pro-life, instead of blaming a stranger, do something towards building a society where abortion is not needed. Same goes for (extremist) pro-choicers - instead of hating on some women's decisions, let's do something towards building society where abortion is not something a womam does because "she had no other choice".

That is always the case, isn't it? I am glad someone here has mentioned that sad fact. Men are just as responsible as women for every pregnancy, yet they assume less than 1% of the responsibility for birth control. One thing that really chaps my hide is men complaining about abortions when they themselves have had unprotected sex with women. Sharing that category are all the sanctimonious Christians condemning abortion, while supporting the troops, desptite all the children they murder in other countries. WTF??!

I don't like abortion, but it at times is a necessary evil. I like it even less when the same people who are against abortion are against taking care of mothers as a society (or anyone who needs supporting). I honestly don't think you can be Christian (most conservative pro-lifers are) and be against taking care of your fellow man and woman.

I find it nothing short of amazing that so many people complain so bitterly about their taxes funding things like women's health care, including abortion, child care, nutrition assistance, education grants and welfare, but not a word about the 60+% of the entire bulk of our taxes being skimmed right off the top to fund the military invasion and occupation of other countries and the murder of their people.

Dude... it should be the mother's choice if she has the child or not. Not the law's choice, the mother's choice. If she believes that it's wrong, then that's her choice. If she believes it's right, then it's her choice. Honestly.

Yes, there is. But, sadly, it's not so simple. The problem is that not all women have safe pregnancies, but sometimes laws stop doctors from acting quickly and do what's right in the given situation.

I want to take this opportunity to bring up the topic of body anonymity. What will happen to your body when you die? Will you be buried, cremated, planted with a seed to nourish a tree? How about you donate your body to science? It could be used to save possibly countless lives! Why doesn't everyone donate their body? In fact, it should be mandatory, shouldn't it? It might save lives, and it would totally save tons of space vs burning you. But are you going to go out right now and sign your body over to a university? Probably not. You'll probably opt for a regular ceremony and burial in a fancy cemetery somewhere where your relatives will toss some flowers on your headstone once every blue moon. If we can't force someone to donate their body to science, we can't force them to carry a baby they don't want. It's the same principle. You save lives but give up your body, or you keep your body and let someone else make that contribution. It should be up to you, shouldn't it?

I'm a young single mom and I have to deal with a lot of judgements from others. Our society is so wrong that I keep thinking.. oh they must think this of this about me. I always feel like I have to prove and explain and it's real bad for my confidence as a Mother. I worry enough without the standards and judgements from others. They don't know why I'm a single mother or how tough it can get. I work and in september I'm going to start a HBO study. I want to give my son a bright future and I do everything for a smile on his face. I do believe there needs to be done more to stop women from getting unwanted pregnant but it will always be a problem. So it's good that there is the opportunity to get an abortion. Sometimes it's the best thing to do, but it can be very traumatic for a women. A child needs his both parents, but not when it would grow up in a toxic environment. For us it's better like this, now I can be the best, loving and stable mom that he need.

chrissprucefield avatar

Sometimes, it's better to split. If you don't feel good in the relationship, your child will certainly not, and it will be better to have a single good, stable and functional parent that can care, than two halfwits fighting each other, often causing trauma and instability for the kid. Just like you, get it over and done with. Better things will come. People are b****y by nature as they always knows your situation better than you do, and stick their noses where they don't belong. Good luck to you and your son, and give the knowbetters your two-finger salute. Trust me, sometimes, some "friends" are not really that much of friends, and you are better off without them. I myself, keep tabs on them, and if they go too deep in the red for the wrong reasons, sometimes, it's better just to cut lose, get new friends that are better for you. Remember that a good friend is one that stays with you when it gets rough. Just remember to reciprocate when they need it.

I don't think being raised in a single parent household impacts a child's development. I'm being raised by my dad just fine and I don't have any developmental problems I've been accepted into a technical school thanks to being raised by my dad since he pushed me to do me best and encouraging me while my ma said I shouldn't try. Being raised by a single parent is just fine as long as they don't abuse you.

Yes mabye you're pro life for the baby, but take a pregnant women who was raped, you're taking away her life by forcing her to have this child and throwing away her future by making her raise a child she had no choice but to give birth to. I say pro life for the women, the rapists should be punished here, not the women.

Those circumstances can apply without being raped. Any woman who has a baby is still throwing away a personal future to raise a child. That's why abortion is so important.

I don't think it's anyone's business what a woman chooses to do for her own body. Just because you believe a fetus is a human with rights doesn't give you the right to try and force your belief on others. A woman choosing to have an abortion, regardless of your beliefs, has no impact on your life. If I chose to have an abortion tomorrow and never told anyone, whose life would be impacted (for the sake of this statement, pretend the father supports whatever decision the woman makes... or maybe he has no clue she's pregnant and never plans on knowing and would definitely be for abortion if he did know).

As a Christian (not all Christians think like this) I think that abortion should be legal until the heart beat, unless the mother has a reason to not have the baby. If you don’t know by 6 weeks that’s not ideal and you should always be sure if there’s a possibility that you’re pregnant. Rape, incest, fatal deformities, dangers to the mother, etc, they all are valid reasons to have an abortion. Of course it’s still the mothers choice, not the fathers because the mother has to carry it and give birth. Everyone has their opinions, please don’t hate on others for theirs people!

Exhibit A - (in america at least) say a guy rapes a girl and knocks her up, he's going to jail for less time than her if she gets an abortion. Exhibit B - if a fourteen year old girl wants a child and is financially stable, no ones going to let her adopt a baby right?? yet if a girl of that age needs an abortion because she cant support the child and she might die giving birth, she has to have it. I don't think these people realize that you can get pregnant from rape and it's pathetic! Yes it was YOUR mistake that you got raped, it's a choice YOU made! If you got raped and can't take care of a baby, there is nothing wrong with getting an abortion! If you can't take care of a baby, getting an abortion is obviously a better idea! If you can't take care of a child then it's not going to have a very great life, but if you abort it that's MURDER. Let me put it this way: if you had the option, would you kill an already born baby but keep an unborn baby alive, or kill an unborn baby and keep an already born baby alive?? If the unborn baby is just as important, my question is impossible to answer

Pointless comparison. While being faithful to everything said on the left, every woman needs to think twice about having that baby and if the decision is to have one, two things must be in place at a minimum: have that child with your husband (and not any man), and be financially ready to raise that child and not depend on the society to raise that child.

It's not a tiny human, but a fetus. It can't even be considered sentient until about 24 weeks along, and even then not as sentient as a common dog or cat. On top of that, you are not allowed to control what we do with any part of our bodies any more than we women are allowed to control what you do with your bodily products.

I'm sorry, but one topic has nothing to do with the other. A pro-lifer is simply telling you not to murder your unborn child ... that's common sense!! However, I also agree that single mothers are often treated unfairly, but that's also why marriage is soooooo important. This generation has lost sight of the traditional values that are supposed to nurture a family, which is why there are so many broken homes out there. I realise that it doesn't always work out that way for many people, so I agree that there should be more support for single mothers.

mabnightowl avatar

What is common sense is that a fetus isn't even sentient until 5-6 months along, and a woman is a fully developed human with every right to autonomy over her own body and anything living in or on it. Even the anti-choice "rulebook" (The Bible) didn't even give a born infant any worth until it was a month old!

It's a personal experience and (can be) something special, on top of that: It's none of another's business, and if those think it is, they're the ones leading a sad life. Sure, the term "Lucky at cards, unlucky in love" is on it's place in this regard, but luck can switch lanes now and then.

Have we totally forgotten how milf went ? Not that that was great but, seriously ? Which one do we pick? Can we just be who we are, male, female, or however, and just be happy? The insecurity is mind blowing to me, on behalf of the observer!

How is this a relevant comparison? How about comparing the reaction you get as a male when telling someone about being a victim of sexual assault.

I dont agree that only weak men show emotion. It's nice to see a man who has emotions instead of trying to act like they are made of stone, with no feelings.

Honestly, I have a problem with either gender of superhero being displayed in a sexual manner.

I think they over sexualize super heroes, but there is a difference. The male characters are being portrayed as strong, the women as sexual. If female super heros looked more like Serena Williams or Kerri Walsh it would be different.

We were playing around, play fighting when I kicked my husband in the balls. It wasn't on purpose and I instantly felt horrible as he spent about 5 minutes in pain on the floor. The worst he got me was an elbow to the nose that caused a nose bleed, and one where he slammed my back into the thermostat. Literally last week my husband asked "Why don't we wrestle anymore" and all that flashed through my head. I don't like the idea of women hitting men any more than a man hitting a woman. The only fighting I am okay with is play fighting.

I don't agree with this one. Men get a lot of pressure on their bodies, as much as women. There is not a single person I met who said that they should "accept themselves" as a way to solve their problems (with getting laid). On the same note, any magazine cover will show that makeup is not a way to solve problems, or there wouldn't be 254 pages of the "new amazing diet already used by 45 stars that will make you lose weight before you even realize it". And we also have countless articles on "accept yourself and screw who doesn't, you don't need them anyway"...

As someone who hate body hair, both are unacceptable. But I don't care about what they do as long as I don't have to touch them :p

I kinda like emotional boys more, like, atleast they aren't like those "badass" shitsacks like others. Also, expressing emotions is actually good for own body.

Wait... what is this trying to say, even? What I gather is that people will judge you regardless of how you look. Surprise!

women like that are the ones who make people think wrong about feminism. And, because many people are soooo closed minded, they think every single woman who wants equity are like that.

No. Any statistics on the subject will show that women do not get paid equally for the same job, with the same qualifications and experience.
