Someone Asked For Examples Of Double Standards In Our Society, And Here Are The 57 Best Examples
In case you weren't previously aware, the world we live in today is plagued by double standards, which most people are happy to ignore in the name of 'keeping the peace.' When Twitter users were asked by Hashtag Roundup to share some double standard examples using the hashtag #NowThatsADoubleStandard, they disturbed that peace like there was no tomorrow.
Some of them are 'classics' that we're all familiar with; men being made to feel ashamed for crying, women being called 'bitches' because of their confidence, and the debate over who, exactly, is allowed to go jogging with their top off. To save you the trouble of combing through the busy Twittersphere, we've compiled some of the best Tweets to the thread right here on Bored Panda for your viewing pleasure. Or displeasure, because, let's face it, double standards in social interactions are pretty infuriating.
Scroll down to take it all in, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Y'know, because of this stupid double standard, I find out almost impossible to cry when I need to let go of sorrow and pain. There's many a time I wished I could cry but couldn't.
Not all teachers are great.. They are humans and as in all areas, some can be pretty crappy humans. I had some awesome teachers, but also had my share of bad ones..
This one is especially bad. Grey hair should be seen as a sign of wisdom, not age. Also, i think this is a stereotype because women tend to dye their hair more often than men.
I've met plenty of creepy cute people, and some truly charasmatic, intelligent, funny "not-so-cute" (according to once culture's very limited, commercialised interpretation of "cute") people who I adore spending time with.
I always get told I'm skinny. People don't think anything of it, but it's starting to hurt.
My mother got those comments her entire life and they're just as hurtful as telling people they're fat. She ended up feeling very bad about her body and going on special weight-gaining diets. Once, we were walking up the stairs in our apartment block and a neighbor opened her door, poked her head out, said "You're all bones. You should eat more," then immediately closed the door again. Had she been waiting for us just to pass judgement? Who does she think she is, that she can drop unsolicited opinions?
Load More Replies...I was raised that it's rude to comment on someone's weight, period, whether the person is very thin or very heavy. Unless, that is, you're that person's doctor -- then it's kind of your job to say something.
Oh can I upvote this 1000 Times?!?! Illness has kept me from putting on weight no matter how hard I try. Strangers think it's fine to comment all the time that I 'need to eat a sandwich'. One day I got so fed up I yanked up my shirt and said, "if you can fit it through the tube, I'll be happy to 'eat' it!" He almost fainted.
It's not okay. Who said it was okay? As someone overweight I find it ridiculous though that if someone wants to point out I have fat on me they poke my stomach or have even grabbed. I instinctively swiped away the arm of a professional Muay Thai fighter when he did that. Luckily he's mostly a nice guy but to hell with that. No one has the right to cross boundaries like that. I stopped talking to some people because before so much as a "Hi, how are you?" There's a pat on the stomach and "you could do with losing some weight."
who do you know that only thinks one of those is rude? Those are both rude comments and potentially hurtful. I wonder if you aren't really noting the difference between fat shaming and skinny shaming? Fat shaming is backed by an entire system of discrimination whereas being skinny is overall promoted as a positive in many western cultures. Hurt feelings are painful but not the same as systemic discrimination.
My former mother in law would say that to me. "You're to skinny, you need to eat more! Whenever we're in town, I never see you eating very much!" She and I always had a tense relationship, so that didn't help. Aft the time, I had been working out a LOT but my clothes still didn't fit as well as they used to. I had always been self conscious about my weight. I don't know if it was meant as a terribly executed compliment, or what, but it made me feel pretty uncomfortable. I shared my feelings with my ex husband and he just got mad at me, so maybe that gives some insight into why we're no longer together. Anyway, I think skinny shaming is different from fat shaming. It's a backhanded compliment--designed to appear nice to hurt deep down. The reasons are different for giving such a s****y "compliment," buti think you're right. Nobody really says either of those without bad intentions. One is just disguised as a compliment.
Load More Replies...I guess because now-a-days, it's a good thing to be skinny. Well that's how society views it. If you're skinny, you're beautiful. I'm not agreeing with it at all btw, I'm just saying that's how society thinks.
I think it's different for men now. You have to be muscly, being skinny will still get you teased for being a wimp or a wet noodle etc...
Load More Replies...Another one is that it is okay to make fun of short people even though they have nothing to do with their height.
Something I get all the time, being only 4'11''. The number of times I'm ignored because I'm too short to take seriously, or I couldn't be of help because I can't see as far away as anyone else, or even, don't scrape our bum on the kerb when you cross the road. Short-a**e is a real insult as far as I'm concerned!
Load More Replies...I feel this! There's just no pleasing the world... too skinny, too fat, too tall, not tall enough. Bah!
But if you buy '*beauty/grooming product' you'll look and feel so much better
Load More Replies...I got one: telling people they are fat and wrong and they are saying it bc they are "worried about their health", but to a skinny person (who is sickly skinny) "omg you are SO healthy". Healthy =/= skinny
People assume: if a woman is thin, she must have an eating disorder. If she's fat, she is lazy and has emotional problems
Load More Replies...yeah people seem to think it's okay. I once was with a group of friends who all agreed whole heartedly when one told me I was "too skinny and disgusting looking". (BMI of 18 so I'm slim but healthy). When I protested and pointed out that those comments are hurtful, no one understood and just went "but it's TRUE, you are skinny". So I said 'yeah, and I think some of you are overweight' (which they are, to the point of unhealthy) 'but I can't tell you that, can I?' and then I've felt bad ever since, for basically calling some of my friends overweight. They still tell me i'm too skinny.
Just saying, I'm a skinny girl who can't gain weight. Seeing adds for clothes with curvy women with huge assets makes me feel like s**t. Hearing songs that say things like "f**k skinny bitches" makes me feel like s**t. Ex would always show me porn of women with assets 10x larger than mine, told me to start regimes to make this bigger or that bigger, breast enhancement creams...clearly you and the rest of society want something else.
I'm always being told I'm too skinny.People used to lift me up randomly to see how light I was. I hated it sooooo much. I started wearing big sweaters so people won't think I'm as small as I am, and it stopped after that.
I learned a technique of literally glueing myself to the floor to stop people doing that. I think I learned it a Judo class, but it was a long time ago. It worked though, to the shock of many!
Load More Replies..."you're so thin a slight breeze could make you snap" "does your mom feed you?" "oh my gosh you remind me of concentration camp people" "you're a bean pole" "you're so bony it's uncomfortable to hug you. you need more meat on your body" :)))) can. I. just. f*****g. live. thanks.
being fat or skinny dont matter if u can do do ur daily task without anyones help that being said who cares what anyone thinks if someone says u r fat eat them too 😂😂
I've had people mention how skinny I am. Some people are envious though I can eat whatever want and not get fat.
Just don't comment on people's bodies, but I think some people think telling them they are skinny is a compliment because ya know fat phobia
This is so true! Get called a beanpole etc. all the time, ruined my confidence.
Because skinny people don't suffer near as much. No skinny person is given a wide berth on a bus or train, they aren't required to buy two plane tickets, and being skinny is not seen as a moral failing.
From experience; it does mean you have less right to the arm rest on said planes/coaches because the other person needs more space.
Load More Replies...When your skinny eat double recommeded cals a day to try put on weight then people tell me I need a good meal or say how are you not fat?
it´s nasty anyway to play judge over bodies, that u r not even invitet to touch. any person answering "oh thanx" when a stranger shows such a disrespect (mostly to judge one´s fuckability) with a "positive" result .. teaches to judge anybody. "you have a great figure" = "not ur biz, shut up u superficial freak" as answer. nothin "nice" to reduce me to an object to involve in physical thoughts, when i never gave signs to be physical.
The world doesn’t hate a skinny b***h for being a skinny b***h that’s why it’s okay!
gimmi a male version of "b***h" and i won´t call u double-standart sexist
Load More Replies...This one to me is kind of neat because it is something that is not as charged as sex, or race. At least for me it allows me to ponder my own thoughts to see how something (being a overweight person) I just can't imagine could be hurtful really is. Thanks for the comments everyone. Very insightful.
your point? Does the number of people doing one or the other negate one or the other?

I am an avid horror film fan and this has bothered me a lot. I personally find sex scenes stupid and unnecessary and have often found myself to chose a 13 rated film over an 18 because I can expect more gore and less sex. That shouldn't be.
Let me be pedantic and point out that Eric here did not mean "sexually or sexyly kissing". Just a simple pek on the cheeck between two men is enough to make most of the people freak out.
Well, I consider this girl funny but not because she's overweight, she just looks like a funny, cheerful person.
HOP called for Franken's resignation while being led by Trump who bragged about groping women.
so your only angry American Gis were killed? not all the millions of allied fighters trying to protect the world from at tyrannical regime or the millions of innocent Jews? This is a good point but its worded really badly. All Nazis are evil no matter when they live/lived or what country they are from.
I think that this is completely unfair, so I rebel by only shaving twice a month and only in spring and early autumn, for this is the time when you have to go to school and the weather is hot.
Describe himself as a self-made man, started his business with dad's money...
Congress makes retirement (Social security) and healthcare mandates for us, and then exempt themselves.
I Romania you can stay all day long on a beach topless, nobody boders you. In mall or restaurant nobody goes in topless, man or woman. But on beach you are free.
I don't really see the double standard here... I'm vegeterian AND I donc "discard carelessly my rubbish", so what's the point ? Is there like an "exclusively vegeterian rubbish polluting the ocean" that I'm not aware of ? It concerns everyone actually, no matter what we eat !
To be fair here, the current POTUS gets away with things that would land most of us unwashed masses squarely behind bars, so. . .
I don't see that as a double standard. But rather an informed critique.
This list was interesting and infuriating at the same time! I'm all riled up now... Fists balled n teeth gnashing..
Good ! Anger is energy, and we need energy to change things ! :-)
Load More Replies...I would like to remind people there are double standards with men. I've seen it on this app numerous times. Pictures of half naked men: girls swoon. Pictures of half naked women: girls judge the every detail out of the photo. Being real here. If you down vote then I see you girl. I see you.
And then you have the men posting their shirtless selphies s**t-shaming women uploading their bikiny pictures, even when they're obviously not even meant to be sexual, like for example, just a scene at the beach with a tiny little protagonist not in the main focus of the surroundings.

(I assume this is about Trump) I am almost 100% sure that Trump is an atheist. Not a good person, or a thinking atheist (like, he's not generally skeptical, he just doesn't think or care about religion), but an atheist nonetheless, and I think it's weird that some of his hardcore Christian fanbase doesn't realize that.
Load More Replies...According to the charity Prostate Cancer UK, breast cancer - the most common female cancer received more than double the annual research spend - £853 per breast cancer case diagnosed, compared to £417 for prostate cancer, though it is the most common male cancer. Both have very similar death rates. That’s double standards.
Men get breast cancer too btw (yes less but it does happen) - so also benefit from that research spend.

It’s ok to ask why someone “is so quiet”, but not “why someone is so loud”. Extroversion is preferred to introversion.
The items on this list were really thought-provoking and made me wonder why Bored Panda has only up and down voting buttons. Some of the downvoted comments were really valuable, it is just that they did not represent the opinion of the majority. I would like to see a separate "inappropriate" button for inappropriate comments, as not reflecting the opinion of the majority is not the same as making a comment which is against the value of this community.
I have seen Hoda Kotb of The Today Show oil up the bare chest of the Tongan Olympic torch runner, and I have seen her and Kathie Lee Gifford fawn over a shirtless, underage Justin Bieber. Now substitute the genders and witness one of the biggest double standards in our society.
That's gross. I don't know anyone that would find that behavior acceptable from either sex.

Growing up in the 90s I always hated myself for not being skinny, then one day we were at Disney and he tells me how he was always attracted to Ursula and not Ariel and then it finally clicked. Different people are attracted to different things and that's ok.
