Someone Asked For Examples Of Double Standards In Our Society, And Here Are The 57 Best Examples
In case you weren't previously aware, the world we live in today is plagued by double standards, which most people are happy to ignore in the name of 'keeping the peace.' When Twitter users were asked by Hashtag Roundup to share some double standard examples using the hashtag #NowThatsADoubleStandard, they disturbed that peace like there was no tomorrow.
Some of them are 'classics' that we're all familiar with; men being made to feel ashamed for crying, women being called 'bitches' because of their confidence, and the debate over who, exactly, is allowed to go jogging with their top off. To save you the trouble of combing through the busy Twittersphere, we've compiled some of the best Tweets to the thread right here on Bored Panda for your viewing pleasure. Or displeasure, because, let's face it, double standards in social interactions are pretty infuriating.
Scroll down to take it all in, and let us know what you think in the comments.

On the logic that the sad old politicians who think rape is ok but abortion isn't, but can't get it up any more, can still get a boner when they're being misogynistic a******s.
Load More Replies...Well, in the country were I live, you can go to your family doctor and they give the birth control for free. Some other methods are not included, like the ring or the pad but they have many different brands of pills for free and also condoms.
I believe this is also relevant because how many times women have to be lectured about how they should hurry up and have kids early since it is irresponsible for them to wait later on and so on? Yet (aside from the many instances where viagra serves other purposes) limp d*ck it's nature's way of saying men should not longer be reproducing yet many are constantly defying nature. It is absurd.
Well, that's the U.S. where you have a disgusting cretins of the religious right in positions of power.
Ha. That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. Where did you come up with this great joke?
Load More Replies...I live in Germany and have to pay the pill myself. Insurance only covers it if there are medical reasons. But honestly I can live with 50€ for a year.
Load More Replies...Well, no clue where you live but in Germany birth control is free for girls under 18 and Viagra isn't covered in any health insurance.
Most birth control wasn't covered by insurance until they started covering Viagra. That's been years ago.
in germany viagra is coverde by insurance, reading glasses are not (completely). men should be able to have sex, but not see with who ¿¿¿ ;)
This entire thing sounds like kids sling mud,why can't people black white male female just go about your business happy and kind to,others and mind your pun business.
Load More Replies...Not all completely cover the cost. There's also the fact that some women cannot take certain birth controls because they will literally ruin your life.
Load More Replies...Can someone please give more info about this? I suppose this is a reality in the USA? But I thought that you have the kind of insurance you choose so..., sorry just a really interesting topic and I'd love to learn more. Thanks. :)
The government relies on Americans to get their insurance through their employers (employer gets group rates on plans through for-profit insurance companies). However, employers don't have to provide insurance if the company is small, you only work seasonally, you work 34 or fewer hours a week, etc. I have 2 jobs, never scheduled more than 30 hours, so employers don't provide insurance. That means, if we're poor enough, we get government paid insurance (Medicaid). Otherwise, like me, we pay out of pocket for independent plans with one of the for-profit insurers. Affordable Health Care Act helped us get more choices and better prices on independent plans, but not much better. 2 jobs, 40% of my income is for insurance, the portions of medical bills not covered by insurance and prescriptions, for one adult and one college student.
Load More Replies...I believe the premise is that the government is benefited more by families who have children, which means they'd prefer viagra, something that contributes to births than something that stops them
Abortions are covered by taxes sooooooooo... Why should birth control. Also not every man will suffer from ED, however almost every woman will get her period. So for the insurance company it makes more sense for them to cover Viagra rather than birth control pills. Less money to spend, more money in their pockets. Also Viagra is used to create life, birth control doesnt, each drug is different from each other and has a different purpose. I live in Canada so that's how it works in Canada as far as I know. Stop comparing apples to oranges.
No that’s not true....insurance cover birth control and is way cheaper then vigra
Obviously. Don’t wanna have kids don’t have sex if you wanna have sex but you can’t you’re f****d .... hence insurance
Not always true. Depends on your plan. This is a commonly used and baseless claim. My plan covers birth control and not viagra. My friend has a plan that covers neither. I work with people that help people sign up for ACA and many plans cover birth control.
Re: stille20. My first comment was actually meant to be a response to my second comment, and I mistakenly put them as separate. My point was that BOTH have multiple purposes and insurance covering one but not the other is illogical and detrimental. When I was a teen I was almost put on birth control by my doctor because I basically had a non stop period that was starting to lead to more serious issues. The primary purpose, as well as the secondary purpose of both is very important and should be covered by all insurances. I apologize for not making this more clear, and thank you for pointing out that I seemed to be arguing that ED medication was more important than birth control
Viagra is a medication for high blood pressure. You only know of it because of its famous side effect.
Fertility treatment isnt covered but sex changes are for many insurance plans.Or birth control is much more widely covered than fertility treatment. More than a double standard.
It's drug that help men when they have erection issues. And have few other medical purposes.
Load More Replies...I have seen this posted in many places for almost 20 years. Yet I have had several different medical plans during that time and never has any of my plans covered Viagra or any of the other similar medications. It makes me question how true this statement really is.
I don't know how is it in States but here it might be covered when it is used for medical reason.
Better argument. Male contraceptives are covered by health insurance, so why isn't Female contraceptives covered? This isn't true though.
Viagra is NOT covered by insurance. PLEASE LOOK UP S**T BEFORE YOU SWALLOW IT WHOLESALE.
Complete Oposites Viagra corrects a failure of the body to work naturally. Birth control prevents the body from working naturally.
Never seen Viagra covered by insurance, but I've seen lots of fertility treatments for women covered. I think that's a poor example. In Canada I've never heard of a plan that doesn't cover birth control, but would cover Viagra.
Canada is not the USA.....USA policies are nuts
Load More Replies...LOL. No, no it doesn't. How could birth control murder a living breathing human being?
Load More Replies...Seriously? God how the f**k do people not understand that BC is used for soooooo much more than that?? It's 2017!
Load More Replies...Can you explain exactly what this has to do with feminism?
Load More Replies...So are birth control pills. They aren't just used for preventing pregnancy. They reduce menstrual cramps, lighten periods, they help prevent bone thinning, acne, cysts in the breasts and ovaries, anemia, serious infections in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus, pms and endometrial and ovarian cancers etc.
Load More Replies...Yes. Birth control helps with soooooo many issues while viagra keeps an old guy's d**k hard.
Load More Replies...And women use birth control for a myriad of heath issues, so what's your point?
Load More Replies...Men don't NEED to get an erection. (I mean don't get me wrong, I want men's parts to work right but....) Women NEED birth control for many, many reasons that have nothing to do with preventing pregnancy.
Load More Replies...Y'know, because of this stupid double standard, I find out almost impossible to cry when I need to let go of sorrow and pain. There's many a time I wished I could cry but couldn't.
Not all teachers are great.. They are humans and as in all areas, some can be pretty crappy humans. I had some awesome teachers, but also had my share of bad ones..
This one is especially bad. Grey hair should be seen as a sign of wisdom, not age. Also, i think this is a stereotype because women tend to dye their hair more often than men.
I've met plenty of creepy cute people, and some truly charasmatic, intelligent, funny "not-so-cute" (according to once culture's very limited, commercialised interpretation of "cute") people who I adore spending time with.
The grown up equivalent of sticking fingers in your ears and going "LALALALALALALALA!"
I am an avid horror film fan and this has bothered me a lot. I personally find sex scenes stupid and unnecessary and have often found myself to chose a 13 rated film over an 18 because I can expect more gore and less sex. That shouldn't be.
Let me be pedantic and point out that Eric here did not mean "sexually or sexyly kissing". Just a simple pek on the cheeck between two men is enough to make most of the people freak out.
Well, I consider this girl funny but not because she's overweight, she just looks like a funny, cheerful person.
HOP called for Franken's resignation while being led by Trump who bragged about groping women.
so your only angry American Gis were killed? not all the millions of allied fighters trying to protect the world from at tyrannical regime or the millions of innocent Jews? This is a good point but its worded really badly. All Nazis are evil no matter when they live/lived or what country they are from.
I think that this is completely unfair, so I rebel by only shaving twice a month and only in spring and early autumn, for this is the time when you have to go to school and the weather is hot.
Describe himself as a self-made man, started his business with dad's money...
Congress makes retirement (Social security) and healthcare mandates for us, and then exempt themselves.
I Romania you can stay all day long on a beach topless, nobody boders you. In mall or restaurant nobody goes in topless, man or woman. But on beach you are free.
I don't really see the double standard here... I'm vegeterian AND I donc "discard carelessly my rubbish", so what's the point ? Is there like an "exclusively vegeterian rubbish polluting the ocean" that I'm not aware of ? It concerns everyone actually, no matter what we eat !
To be fair here, the current POTUS gets away with things that would land most of us unwashed masses squarely behind bars, so. . .
I don't see that as a double standard. But rather an informed critique.
This list was interesting and infuriating at the same time! I'm all riled up now... Fists balled n teeth gnashing..
Good ! Anger is energy, and we need energy to change things ! :-)
Load More Replies...I would like to remind people there are double standards with men. I've seen it on this app numerous times. Pictures of half naked men: girls swoon. Pictures of half naked women: girls judge the every detail out of the photo. Being real here. If you down vote then I see you girl. I see you.
And then you have the men posting their shirtless selphies s**t-shaming women uploading their bikiny pictures, even when they're obviously not even meant to be sexual, like for example, just a scene at the beach with a tiny little protagonist not in the main focus of the surroundings.
Load More Replies...#4: Worse than being supported by people calling themselves Christians, they call him a good Christian. Also his multiple marriages and mistresses.
(I assume this is about Trump) I am almost 100% sure that Trump is an atheist. Not a good person, or a thinking atheist (like, he's not generally skeptical, he just doesn't think or care about religion), but an atheist nonetheless, and I think it's weird that some of his hardcore Christian fanbase doesn't realize that.
Load More Replies...According to the charity Prostate Cancer UK, breast cancer - the most common female cancer received more than double the annual research spend - £853 per breast cancer case diagnosed, compared to £417 for prostate cancer, though it is the most common male cancer. Both have very similar death rates. That’s double standards.
Men get breast cancer too btw (yes less but it does happen) - so also benefit from that research spend.
Load More Replies...Numerous studies cite instances where women were estimated to have less pain and to be more likely to exaggerate it, where men were more likely to be recommended analgesics, and women to be recommended psychological treatment. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:TF_tRoH2uocJ:links.lww.com/PAIN/A246+&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=au
I practice medicine and this is so true. It's even worse for women of color.
Load More Replies...Wonder where this is. Viagra sure isn't covered by any health insurance providers I know of.
It’s ok to ask why someone “is so quiet”, but not “why someone is so loud”. Extroversion is preferred to introversion.
The items on this list were really thought-provoking and made me wonder why Bored Panda has only up and down voting buttons. Some of the downvoted comments were really valuable, it is just that they did not represent the opinion of the majority. I would like to see a separate "inappropriate" button for inappropriate comments, as not reflecting the opinion of the majority is not the same as making a comment which is against the value of this community.
I have seen Hoda Kotb of The Today Show oil up the bare chest of the Tongan Olympic torch runner, and I have seen her and Kathie Lee Gifford fawn over a shirtless, underage Justin Bieber. Now substitute the genders and witness one of the biggest double standards in our society.
That's gross. I don't know anyone that would find that behavior acceptable from either sex.
Load More Replies...I saw a girl in TV complaining about the fact that people were trying to get her in a date with a fat guy. She was super obese. What's the problem with the fat guy? Beauty comes in all shapes, right?
Even fat people are allowed to have a type, and people pushing two fat People To be together just because they are fat is bogus. . My husband is skinny AF and loves my fat a*s. Growing up in the 90s I always hated myself for not being skinny, then one day we were at Disney and he tells me how he was always attracted to Ursula and not Ariel and then it finally clicked. Different people are attracted to different things and that's ok.
Load More Replies...That anti-Trump propaganda on Bored Panda is so annoying that it hurts. Less politics please (if you are not able to stay objective, which you obviously are not)
What is it uncofortable stepping outside your bubble? This is an international website. The majority of people outside the US are against Trump (maybe because he insulted every possible country?).

Actually, we didn't. The electoral college did, and ignored the votes of 65 million people.

Load More Replies...Yeah, no. Nice try. I had no interest in shirtless Taylor Lautner.
