Someone Asked For Examples Of Double Standards In Our Society, And Here Are The 57 Best Examples
In case you weren't previously aware, the world we live in today is plagued by double standards, which most people are happy to ignore in the name of 'keeping the peace.' When Twitter users were asked by Hashtag Roundup to share some double standard examples using the hashtag #NowThatsADoubleStandard, they disturbed that peace like there was no tomorrow.
Some of them are 'classics' that we're all familiar with; men being made to feel ashamed for crying, women being called 'bitches' because of their confidence, and the debate over who, exactly, is allowed to go jogging with their top off. To save you the trouble of combing through the busy Twittersphere, we've compiled some of the best Tweets to the thread right here on Bored Panda for your viewing pleasure. Or displeasure, because, let's face it, double standards in social interactions are pretty infuriating.
Scroll down to take it all in, and let us know what you think in the comments.

Y'know, because of this stupid double standard, I find out almost impossible to cry when I need to let go of sorrow and pain. There's many a time I wished I could cry but couldn't.
Not all teachers are great.. They are humans and as in all areas, some can be pretty crappy humans. I had some awesome teachers, but also had my share of bad ones..
Domestic abuse against men is a pretty serious issue - even when it's not physical. Men are taught that being beaten by a woman means that they are weak, so they are less likely to report it, too. And if there is a fight, and chances are, the man will win, it becomes all too easy for anyone, including authorities, to turn it into abuse against the woman, because that's what we've come to expect.
Society needs to learn that a strong female character DOES NOT mean a female who goes around hitting men and shooting things. It means a well-written female with an unwavering character.
I fully agree with this. If a man hits a woman it's NEVER OK, but even when a woman is physically abusive, the majority of people argue that it's still not okay for a man to fight back physically. Yet those same people arguing that, like to argue that men and women should be treated equal, and that lack of equality is the biggest issue with society!
Not any more. There are now laws against domestic abuse on a man from a women. There are women just as guilty of beating their husbands
This one is weird to me, not because it's wrong but because I never knew that a woman hitting a man was even moderately acceptable. Growing up my grandmother was always stronger than my grandfather so when they fought it was on more equal grounds. So I was taught that all violence was wrong no matter the gender.
This is close to the thought that a woman who gets touched without permission is sexual assault but a man getting touched without permission obviously liked it because he was getting attention. Example : Time magazine silence breakers where they only glossed over the males who were assaulted, raped, and harassed.
True. If the man hits back in self defense, he's the abusive, evil one
I've never heard or read where a woman hitting a man is acceptable. Matter of fact, Marissa Alexander, a black woman, served a VERY lengthy prison sentence for shooting a warning shot into the air to stop her husband from attacking her AGAIN. He’d physically abused her before as had been formerly recorded by police on separate occasions including 9 days after giving birth to their daughter. She had a legitimate reason to be in fear for her life. She was convicted despite using the same "stand your ground" defense that allowed George Zimmerman to pursue a teenager and then instigate a confrontation with that child, whom he then legally MURDERED. How’s that for a double standard? #BeingBlackInAmerikkka
Obviously there are anecdotal cases. These aren't meant to discount those of course. The fact is that there are overall gender biases and you must admit (mustn't you?) that for the most part these are generally true. That's all this is. They're clearly not meant to be true for every single person in every single situation.

When I was studying abroad, in England, I used to see drunk women at parties regularly hit men and the men laughed it off. I was dumbfounded. It was neither cute nor funny and it could end terribly for both parties. It seemed to be a common occurrence.
Cheater: romanticized. I'm neglected, ignored, in a rut, feel unloved, under appreciated, taken for granted, lonely, etc with significant other. New girl/guy pays attention to me, appreciates me, wants me, showers with compliments, passionate attraction, etc. Anyways, s/he'll never know, i still love her/him, i cant leave her/him. Just a kiss. Just once. Not a big deal. Friends push & encourage u to go through with it & 'hav a lil fun.' Cheated on: feels devastated, hurt, betrayed, used, worthless, etc. Rage, anger, vengeful etc. How could s/he?!?!?!?! 'If u loved me, u wouldnt hav!' Significant other is so heartless, selfish, manipulative, only thinks about sex, etc. S/he is undoubtedly the villain. Friends all badmouth her/him for cheating.
I don't consider it an acceptable display of anger and I don't know anybody who hits other people in the face. (Although, tbh, there is a little bit of difference between a bitchslap and a fist in the face by someone who 50 pounds heavier)
I REALLY DON'T ACCEPT THAT AS ACCEPTABLE DISPLAY OF ANGER IN ANY WAY.
So? Men are bigger danger to women than women to men anyway. Women have to fight back and good on them!
Women hitting men can still hurt them, though. He shouldn't have to deal with physical abuse when we don't accept men hitting women. A woman hitting at full strength can hurt more than a man hitting at half strength. We shouldn't judge the man worse just because of his gender if he is actually doing less damage than the woman.

These kind of blogs really p*** me off! You cant just pluck words out the air and call them "double standards", they are out of context and based on archaic, sexiest and subjective statements...I hate the internet!
Another one that's not true. Violence is frowned upon from either side but what people don't want to take into consideration that a lot of males [especially violent ones] are much stronger than their counter parts and very often have killed with one punch [even if they didn't plan it], something a petite female couldn't do. That's why, not because of some flimsy sexism BS.
In physical abuse this type it's not about strength. It's about showing power and dominance, putting other person 'in their place'. It's never okay, no matter which way. And yes, it is existing double standard. Social experiment - man abuses woman publicly - people react to help her. Other way around? Laugh, snorts, pointing finger as it was something funny.
Load More Replies...This one is especially bad. Grey hair should be seen as a sign of wisdom, not age. Also, i think this is a stereotype because women tend to dye their hair more often than men.
I've met plenty of creepy cute people, and some truly charasmatic, intelligent, funny "not-so-cute" (according to once culture's very limited, commercialised interpretation of "cute") people who I adore spending time with.
The grown up equivalent of sticking fingers in your ears and going "LALALALALALALALA!"
I am an avid horror film fan and this has bothered me a lot. I personally find sex scenes stupid and unnecessary and have often found myself to chose a 13 rated film over an 18 because I can expect more gore and less sex. That shouldn't be.
Let me be pedantic and point out that Eric here did not mean "sexually or sexyly kissing". Just a simple pek on the cheeck between two men is enough to make most of the people freak out.
Well, I consider this girl funny but not because she's overweight, she just looks like a funny, cheerful person.
HOP called for Franken's resignation while being led by Trump who bragged about groping women.
so your only angry American Gis were killed? not all the millions of allied fighters trying to protect the world from at tyrannical regime or the millions of innocent Jews? This is a good point but its worded really badly. All Nazis are evil no matter when they live/lived or what country they are from.
I think that this is completely unfair, so I rebel by only shaving twice a month and only in spring and early autumn, for this is the time when you have to go to school and the weather is hot.
Describe himself as a self-made man, started his business with dad's money...
Congress makes retirement (Social security) and healthcare mandates for us, and then exempt themselves.
I Romania you can stay all day long on a beach topless, nobody boders you. In mall or restaurant nobody goes in topless, man or woman. But on beach you are free.
I don't really see the double standard here... I'm vegeterian AND I donc "discard carelessly my rubbish", so what's the point ? Is there like an "exclusively vegeterian rubbish polluting the ocean" that I'm not aware of ? It concerns everyone actually, no matter what we eat !
To be fair here, the current POTUS gets away with things that would land most of us unwashed masses squarely behind bars, so. . .
I don't see that as a double standard. But rather an informed critique.
This list was interesting and infuriating at the same time! I'm all riled up now... Fists balled n teeth gnashing..
Good ! Anger is energy, and we need energy to change things ! :-)

And then you have the men posting their shirtless selphies s**t-shaming women uploading their bikiny pictures, even when they're obviously not even meant to be sexual, like for example, just a scene at the beach with a tiny little protagonist not in the main focus of the surroundings.

(I assume this is about Trump) I am almost 100% sure that Trump is an atheist. Not a good person, or a thinking atheist (like, he's not generally skeptical, he just doesn't think or care about religion), but an atheist nonetheless, and I think it's weird that some of his hardcore Christian fanbase doesn't realize that.

Both have very similar death rates. That’s double standards.
Men get breast cancer too btw (yes less but it does happen) - so also benefit from that research spend.

It’s ok to ask why someone “is so quiet”, but not “why someone is so loud”. Extroversion is preferred to introversion.
The items on this list were really thought-provoking and made me wonder why Bored Panda has only up and down voting buttons. Some of the downvoted comments were really valuable, it is just that they did not represent the opinion of the majority. I would like to see a separate "inappropriate" button for inappropriate comments, as not reflecting the opinion of the majority is not the same as making a comment which is against the value of this community.
I have seen Hoda Kotb of The Today Show oil up the bare chest of the Tongan Olympic torch runner, and I have seen her and Kathie Lee Gifford fawn over a shirtless, underage Justin Bieber. Now substitute the genders and witness one of the biggest double standards in our society.
That's gross. I don't know anyone that would find that behavior acceptable from either sex.

Growing up in the 90s I always hated myself for not being skinny, then one day we were at Disney and he tells me how he was always attracted to Ursula and not Ariel and then it finally clicked. Different people are attracted to different things and that's ok.
