A Tool Planted By The US Government Just Killed This Family’s Dog – And It Could Have Killed Their Son
A 14-year-old boy named Canyon Mansfield was walking his loyal dog Casey near his home in Idaho when the pooch was unexpectedly killed, leaving the whole family heartbroken. It happened when the teenager noticed something sticking half a foot out of the ground in the woods. As soon as Mansfield touched it, he heard something pop and “siss”. Then, orange powder shot out, making Mansfield jumped back in shock. The next thing he knew, Casey the dog was lying on the ground and he could see something was terribly wrong with him…
“[I] saw this red froth coming from his mouth and his eyes turning glassy,” said the boy. As it turned out, the dog was killed by an M44, a US Government approved cyanide trap that is aimed to kill coyotes. It is known that only between 2006 and 2012, over 3,400 animals were mistakenly killed by M44s – and most people are not even aware of the existence of these devices.
“My son Canyon, who witnessed it all, is really struggling with what happened,” Theresa Mansfield, the boy’s mom, told The Dodo. “It was above our house. It makes me not feel safe. I feel like I had terrorism in my own backyard, with my own government.”

Share on Facebookthis is so dangerous. i get it. Coyote can be dangerous too. but this kind of device kill without discernment. it could kill a kid too
God forbid! But it's the only way these stupid people are going to learn anything!
Load More Replies...Its most likely legal because it is a 'controlled' item that is meant to be used judiciously. Obviously this one was not, and someone is responsible for acquiring it and then not acting responsibly.
Load More Replies...This is also sad because if humans hadn't eradicated wolf and cougar populations from these areas they wouldn't have such a problem with coyotes, and feel the need to declare war on poor animals indiscriminately.
You're right. But there is only one thing that is going to change this, long term. That is going to require a robust 'cultured meats' industry, where the select meats are cultured commercially and not by killing animals such as cattle, pigs, chickens, etc. This may be just over the horizon, and when it becomes commercially profitable, the land will no longer be needed for huge herds. There are two things that are going to literally change the world. One of them is the 'cultured meat' industry, which will be safer, and not require the killing of caring animals. The other is the introduction if carbon as a building material. Carbon is over ten times stronger than steel, and over ten times lighter. When this is marketable, you will see the demise of steel and the ability to build anything and everything imaginable. Building will be much taller, and have different shapes. Space elevators will be reality. And we will have much easier access to space. It will be a true wonder.
Load More Replies...Correct me if I'm wrong but under US law if you booby-trap your home against intruders you can be prosecuted, so what's the difference here.
WOW, brilliant "solution" you fncking governMENTAL idiots. You best generously recompense the family for their tragic loss, and remove all those other devices.
Poor innocent doggie... R.I.P..... Seems it's almost always the innocent who pay the price for the stupid choices made my others.
Coyotes can kill our children! Now coyotes and things that kill coyotes can kill our children! The government solution for this will also probably kill our children! What's wrong with us?!
Why are the coyotes gonna get killed? I mean, I know they can be dangerous, but still... all living things should be treated equally! Why government?
Coyotes ARE predators that kill livestock, and kill pets. They generally aren't afraid of humans. They've killed 4 of my cousin's dogs.

Is it an unbreakable rule, for all the societies into this world, that the idiots must always be the leaders of the common logic people?
I'm assuming that if this was government approved for use, then someone else must have gotten it and planted it there. Was it on your property? And since this is almost certainly a regulated product, that means there are transactions recorded that would show all of the individuals in this area, who acquired such items. Have you checked on this yet?
If this happened to my Charlie, I can promise you that I would be doing my level best to find out who was responsible. And when I did find out, there would be Holy Hell to pay for such careless actions. And I'm not talking about litigation either.
Load More Replies...This is unbelievably f*****g stupid. From Wikipedia: "Use of the M44 device has been criticized by animal welfare and environmental groups, as the devices have many unintended victims, including pets and endangered species; strongly indicative of a lack of selectivity, instead of the supposed high level.[5] In 2003, Mr. Dennis Slaugh of Vernal, Utah, was on public lands and mistook an M-44 for a survey marker. When he pulled on it, the device shot sodium cyanide powder on his face and chest causing him to become violently ill.[6] In February 2006, an M44 device killed a man's dog in Utah, as the dog and owner were walking through public land. The man was also affected by the cyanide in the device, and is seeking compensation from the US Department of Agriculture's Wildlife Service, along with the Utah Department of Food and Agriculture.[7] In 2017 a 14 year old boy in Idaho was injured and dog killed by a M44 which detonated near his home. [8]"
RIP Casey and all the coyotes and dogs who were nonsensically killed. This is why we can't have faith in humanity.
Also, I'm turning 14 so I think that I understand how heartbreaking it must have been to lose him. I'm with you
Wow I hope you feel better kid ...my dog Jed last year of natural causes so I know how hard it can be...it's like they're your best friend
This made me cry because recently our government put baits to kill foxes. The foxes have never caused harm to anyone or anything!
This is why human beings should stop meddling with Mother Nature! We kill off all the predators, experience population growth of prey; prey becomes undernourished and diseased so we bring in coyotes. Coyotes flourish until the prey populations dwindle and they go after domestic animals so we kill them off and then prey populations increase unto starvation and disease. If humans took their place in the food chain instead of trying to control it none of this would happen. Personally I am a vegetarian, but I respect the need for population control through hunting for food, not sport. Instead of raising livestock for slaughter, then throwing out 40% of the meat, hunt over-populated areas and eat venison and other wildlife. It is the part we are meant to play. --- So sorry for the loss of Casey, and I hope Canyon gets the support he needs to cope with this traumatic experience.
#!!!!Government......This is the most intelligent plan your team could manage ? WTF Concept vāde mēcum were you guys using ?? You were supposed to KILL the Coyotes - Not use Wile E. Coyote's home grown ACME Manuel !!! What ELSE have you done that is still out in the civilian territory ->LURKING and DEADLY.........
I almost cried when they told us the description of the bomb and how the dog died (Y . Y) Humans can be disgusting. I hope people can learn from this and get rid of other cyanide traps. ( U _ U )
This is absolutely heartbreaking. Does anyone know if there's a way to take action and make a stand against this sort of thing?
Write your congressman and senators. Federal law allows this, federal law can be changed.

thank god we dont have them in aus my cat loves to roam in the park next door
Government people don't learn anything, from their own country experience, or other countries experience. In the 1980s the Australian government dropped a number of strychnine traps to reduce Dingo population. There were a lot of unintended victims, dogs, cats. This called 'cobra effect', https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cobra_effect. Why people always have such stupid rulers?
Well I'm not American so I shouldn't comment about the government but still! Are you guys serious? You shouldn't be killing the coyotes unless they're causing problem (but I'm not saying that they definitely aren't) and at least put up sings warning people if they're on land that has these traps! You killed a dog and you almost killed a kid!! Have some common sense
How... How is this even allowed?! Scariest part is is that the government didn't even bother to warn people of these things! What if that was a young child?! What is wrong with this country.
Terrible and should be criminal. Makes me furious with the Government

I saw this on the news. It wouldn't have helped Casey, but, there should be prominent warning signs displayed for humans. Coyotes are pretty fearless. They come into our suburban neighborhood in broad daylight. I've chased them from the driveway with a broom. They are after cats & small dogs. We found one dead by our back deck.
yep, because we keep moving into their territory....
Load More Replies...A muzzle would protect against ingestion, but not inhalation. Plus, in this case, it was the human who triggered the trap instead of the dog.
