Stray Dog Named Luke Can’t Find A Home Because He’s Too Shy, Shelter Throws An Adoption Party, No One Shows Up

I think most of us have witnessed a sad situation in movies where a child got stood up at their birthday party. However, sometimes situations like this do happen in real life, as unfortunate as it sounds. Recently a story like this happened at Battersea Brands Hatch in Kent, England.

A 5-year-old dog named Luke has been in the shelter for the last 6 months. The pooch had an adoption party prepared especially for him on Valentine’s Day on the 14th of February with the hope of getting him a forever home. However, as nice of an idea as it was, no one showed up for the party and poor Luke remains in the shelter to this day, still looking for his soulmate.

More info: Instagram | battersea.org.uk | twitter.com | youtube.com

In preparation for Valentine’s Day, the staff of the shelter at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home prepared Luke an adoption party

However, not a single person showed up

The shelter has put up Luke’s profile on their website, and here’s what it says:

“Adorable Luke is looking for a home that will supply him with a bed near a radiator and a supply of soft toys! Luke arrived at Battersea as a stray so we have no history of his previous life. While Luke has made friends with all the staff he does have a sensitive side and can be worried about new people initially. New owners must let Luke settle into the home and introduce him to people slowly. You will know when Luke is comfortable as he loves nothing more than leaning in for a fuss and laying across your lap!”

“He will need owners you are experienced in owning large, nervous breeds before. We have found onsite Luke is worried and intolerant of other dogs, he relies on his handler for guidance and support when meeting other dogs so his new owners must have experience in this and be able to read Luke’s body language to be able to tell when he is uncomfortable. Luke will need to be kept on a leash when out on walks so it’s very important he has his own private and secure garden where he can have some off leahd time.”

The shelter has been having trouble in trying to get Luke adopted as the pooch is very shy in nature

Image credits: Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

“Due to this Luke’s new home will need to be in a quiet location in an area which is not highly dog populated. Owners must be confident in handling Luke and continue his clicker training. Luke will need a home with multiple carers who will be able to build up his time spent alone gradually. We feel could live with older sensible teenagers but he would need to be the only pet in his new home.”

Although Luke is a gentle giant, he needs time opening up and has a hard time getting along with other dogs

Image credits: Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

Luke also requires a home where he could be a single dog as he has some other minor health problems

Image credits: Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

“Luke can also be sensitive when being handled around his ears. He has had some treatment while at Battersea, which will be discussed with potential adopters. But owners should be confident in continuing some positive association should he need this again in the future.”

However, despite having a few quirks, Luke still has a lot of love to offer and is absolutely worth it if given a proper chance

If you feel like you have the experience and time to fulfill Luke’s needs, please do get in touch with the shelter. You can do so by heading to their website or sending them an email at bbh.rehomers@battersea.org.uk.

He's without a doubt a bandog. I can see that he's got some Cane Corso in him, possibly Presa. I'm tempted to contact Battersea regarding adoption. I have a gentle female bandog, part Cane Corso about 20 months old. She's very loving, her best friend at the moment is a Mongolian hamster named Stella. Anyhow, I would love to bring that dude home, and let him run the Iowa countryside with us.

This makes me sad. Battersea Dogs & Cats homes are probably the most recognised dog/cat charity in the UK, after the RSPCA there is even a program on Wednesday nights called: Paul O'Grady: For the Love of Dogs #POGDOGS which is specifically based around the sites of Battersea, Old Windsor/Englefield Green, and Brands Hatch. You get to see the journey of existing/new residents get to go to their forever home. It's a sweet show but very good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IiSq1e9lt8 Paul-OGrad...0a2894.jpg Paul-OGrady_-For-The-Love-of-Dogs-620fc830a2894.jpg

WOW! Luke is so like our dog, Buster! He came from a rescue kennels and had been overlooked for ages because people thought he looked like a dangerous breed. Nothing could have been further from the truth! He turned out to be a gentle, soppy, loving creature who allowed our chickens to climb all over him and even lay still for hours when they wanted somewhere warm to sit for the afternoon. Sadly Buster died of lung cancer when he was just 8yrs old. I would take Luke home in a heartbeat if we didn't already have other rescue dogs because they say he needs to be an only dog. Good luck, Luke. I hope you find a forever home soon.

People are brainwashed about pitbulls. Back in the 1930s the American Pitbull was one of the most common breeds, but then later people were breeding them with Rottweilers (maybe) and using them for dog fights, which is now illegal (thank God). I think that's where the bad reputation or misconceptions come from. They're actually kind of similar to Boxers and Shar Peis. I have two Shar Peis and people sometimes think they're Pits.

I would take him in a heartbeat if he was in Florida... I have a friend with a small ranch who lost his large brindle best friend recently to cancer... Luke would have fun running around the fields and hanging out with the horses. He'd not be the only animal, but he could be the only pet.

He is such a beautiful dog. It's easy to say "I'll take him" coz he is so gorgeous BUT he has some significant and specific needs that would take a LOT of time and patience. Having a nervous dog is nerve-racking in itself because they can react aggressively at the smallest thing. In no way am I saying Luke would ever do that or that he is aggressive dog etc. It's just a fact that nervous dogs (no matter the breed) have a higher chance of biting. I truly hope Luke can find a loving home that can be dedicated to give him those needs and he lives a long and happy life.

Most people that would take a rescue Pit already have a rescue Pit. Those are the people with the kindness, patience and compassion it takes to rescue a dog like Luke. I really hope he finds a loving, forever home. He deserves a happy life.

Yeah but if he doesn't do well with kids or other pets, his chances of ending up back at the shelter (or worse like abandoned again or abused) go right back up. Better to wait & find the right home than him continuously being passed off...

Yeah, I fostered a 100% good boy pitbull a few years ago, through a rescue charity. Had him for over a year because despite being a sweetie, he'd spent the 1st year of his life tied to a tree, ignored. He didn't know how to ask to go out (but never went inside), was nervous about every new thing in a house (omg! balloon demons!). We socialized best we could, he became a confident boy, but he ended up going to 2 homes that sent him back the next day because he howled thru the night. We assume he missed us because he didn't do it from day 1 with us. 3rd time was the charm! A young married couple of doctors who knew what they were getting into. They even (this is Arizona so not common) put in backyard grass for him! ❤️

I'm not surprised. Sounds like he is high maintenance and not a lot of people want to deal with that. I hope there is a human soulmate out there somewhere for him honestly though. I have two dogs myself. One a foster dog who I took when their owner decided they wanted another dog and didn't want her anymore. The second is a male shelter dog who had been bounced in and out of a few homes. Had them since they were just about a year old and they're now 8 and 9 respectively.

I truly hope that he gets adopted into a good home. He seems like a sweet dog.

Oh Luke mate I wish I could drive and get you right now but I can't, as a shelter volunteer I know this pain all too well. Hopefully this will help more people spread the word, he is a very handsome boy he will be adopted in no time. Battersea Dogs Home is an amazing place, been there many times, the staff are amazing.

He is not just shy. I like that the shelter is so open and honest about what this beautiful dog needs. Which is not just plenty of love, but experience and correct handling too.

Luke looks a lot like my brother's Chesapeake Bay Retriever from decades ago. A great dog. I hope the right person will adopt Luke soon.

Wow...that's crazy and sad. This dog would go like "hotcakes" i n the U.S. He's a great specimen. I can't understand why nobody would want this lovely gentleman. Now that he's getting this coverage you're going to have to be careful in your selection of whom you allow to adopt him.

Remember that are a lot of deserving dogs at local shelters. If you can't adopt then donate or volunteer. This message brought to you by Winniefred Graf Marchess or Freddie; my rescue lab mix.

Am I the only one who found the title very funny "Shelter Throws An Adoption Party, No One Shows Up". I know I am an a*****e for laughing but this almost never happens when reading a story about pet adoption. So unbelievable and unexpected it's funny

The description sounds like a long list of euphemisms for "agressive, dangerous beast", so it is no surprise people are wary.

The long list of requirements that excludes most people and the fact that they planned the adoption party on the holiday where almost everyone has plans really didn't help this poor dude out, huh?

I'm not surprised. Sounds like he is high maintenance and not a lot of people want to deal with that. I hope there is a human soulmate out there somewhere for him honestly though. I have two dogs myself. One a foster dog who I took when their owner decided they wanted another dog and didn't want her anymore. The second is a male shelter dog who had been bounced in and out of a few homes. Had them since they were just about a year old and they're now 8 and 9 respectively.
