After Seeing Students Use Money To Buy Food, Dog Uses Leaves To Get Some Too
There’s hardly anyone who can argue with the popular saying ‘money doesn’t grow on trees,’ well, maybe except for this adorable dog. A clever canine named Negro managed to secure himself a seemingly endless supply of dog treats, by paying for them with leaves.
Negro lives at the Diversified Technical Education Institute of Monterrey Casanare in Colombia. The stray dog was adopted by the staff and freely roam around the school’s yard. Students would sometimes buy Negro cookies at the local store, but one day the smart dog decided that it was time for him to stop begging for treats because he had a better plan. After careful observation, this dog did something unthinkable. “One day, spontaneously, he appeared with a leaf in his mouth, wagging his tail and letting it be known that he wanted a cookie,” teacher Angela Garcia Bernal told The Dodo.
The black dog offered ‘take it or leaf it’ deal for the store’s attendant. Astonished by the dog’s intelligence, she couldn’t help but ‘sell’ Negro a cookie. “He comes for cookies every day,” Gladys Barreto, a longtime store attendant, told The Dodo. “He always pays with a leaf. It is his daily purchase.” Since his fake money literally grows on trees, the store’s staff decided to allow Negro to buy treats only a couple times a day.
Smartest dog Negro left everyone speechless. “When you first see it, you almost want to cry. He’s found a way to make himself understood. He’s very intelligent,” Bernal said.

Load More Replies...Highly educated, staying in campus. Hopefully no exchange rate fluctuation on his currency :)
Load More Replies...My Finnish Spitz, TessaBell, used to trade dog money all the time for treats. Dog money could be anything that was dropped on the floor that didn't belong there...a piece of lint, a leaf, a button, pins that my grandmother dropped around her sewing area (yes, scared me to death that Tess might swallow one but I couldn't get her to stop bringing them to me when she found them). Her treats were switched from dog cookies to baby carrots when the doctor said she needed to go on a diet. Fine with her!
Many primate species have shown the spontaneous ability to use currency, and can easily be taught to do so, and crows have been known to bring gifts in exchange for treats. This is not to take anything from Negro - he's an impressinvely clever dog for watching how humans buy cookies, and deducing a way that he can emulate them. Clever boy!
There's a sidebranch of this subject that people might be interested in, but I won't say too about about it here beyond that there's an interesting (if you're a biologist!) body of work on animals and 'transactional sex'.
Load More Replies...Well our parents lied to us, money does grow on trees. Money is made of paper and paper comes form trees, life is a lie
Aww - beautiful clever dog - mine used to bring me laundry and expect a treat lol
So this doggo is basically selling leaves (which is totally useless to human) for cookies. A real salesdoggo.
My dog learns by example too. So far she's c**p in the mornings and moans when she doesn't get her own way. Um... nothing at all like me you understand. Smart dogs always deserve lots of cookies but I hope they are dog ones and not human cookies for his health's sake, bless him.
Dogs don't really learn that much by example. He basically is showing positive operant training behavior.
Load More Replies...Best thing about dogs are their honest perception of how they know things work around them. Beautiful and Smart
Is there a way to donate for his treats? Maybe we could help out so they could get him dog cookies?
What a wonderful thing to do for Negro, he is part of the staff/student at the school. Smart dog gets his education watching other students. By the way, the dog is a lot smarter than you and me.
Where to go from here - I was attracted to this story since I wrote a kid's book and it is called "Tree With The Money On It". Where can I get some of these leaves? Don G. Ford TOO CUTE!!! Money-Tree...a79f30.jpg
I wonder how many times a day he tries to buy a treat. If my lab were this smart, he'd try every 5 minutes!
OMG! Dogs are the best thing in this world. (I live with both a dog and a cat)
Adorable. But they should not sell him cookies - dog treats/chews instead!
ooohh, my cat brings me leaves all the time. I usually thank him sincerely for the gift and give him a little treat. I never realized this is him grasping the basic concept of fair trade!
This is in Colombia. Spanish for "black" is "negro", this is literally like English speakers naming their dog "Black" or "Blackie".

But why are you waiting tho? I'm black and I'm not offended because despite what you think, nobody is that sensitive enough to not understand that Negro means black as in the color black in Spanish.
Load More Replies...Not really. In Spanish, it just means "black." It's also pronounced "nay-gro."
Load More Replies...Yes, yes you can. This is in Columbia, and the equivalent of calling any black coated animal Blackie, which is common as muck. World /= America.
