Female Medical Professionals Are Posting Pics Of Them Wearing Bikinis Vs. Work Clothes To Shame Sexist Study
A published study that shamed female medical professionals for sharing bikini photos had people up in arms on social media.
The study, “Prevalence of unprofessional social media content among young vascular surgeons,” appeared in the August 2020 edition of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. The paper defined inappropriate attire as “pictures in underwear, provocative Halloween costumes, and provocative posing in bikinis/swimwear.”
However, healthcare professionals hit back. They flooded the internet with bikini pics alongside photos of themselves in work gear under the #MedBikini hashtag on Instagram and on Twitter. Scroll down, have a look, and don't forget to upvote your fave pics.
Researchers came under fire for a study they conducted about medical professionals
One doctor explained exactly why the study was sexist
The authors of the study have since apologized, as did the Journal of Vascular Surgery. The paper has also been retracted.

Most of the study’s authors have ties to the Boston Medical Center which put out a statement. A BMC spokesman said that the paper was “ill-conceived, poorly executed, and reinforces biases about professionalism and gender” and added that it doesn’t represent the values of the hospital.
“This paper highlights that we have so much more work to do to eliminate gender bias among our medical community, our training programs, and especially in the care we provide to our patients and the communities we serve,” they said.
I prefer to see this Doc looking well and happy rather than overworked and unwell!
The initial backlash was huge. Healthcare professionals criticized the “disturbing” study that concluded that young surgeons ought to be aware of the” permanent public exposure of unprofessional content that can be accessed by peers, patients, and current/future employers.” In other words, the study focused on the footprint that medical pros leave behind on social media and deemed certain things ‘unprofessional.’
The researchers compiled their data by creating ‘neutral’ profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. They then used them to look through the social media feeds of young vascular surgeons.
However, medical professionals pointed out that posing in swimwear, enjoying the beach, or having a cocktail to relax didn’t make them any less professional or less committed to their jobs—it made them human.
Are we expecting med professionals to wear scrubs on their vacation? Sighh
31 years of practice? That means she is well into her 50's. Well, damn.
O my good Lord! She's enjoying a beer while relaxing on holiday!?! Definitely a reprobate...
I’m glad they censor the surgeries. I don’t have a tolerance towards blood.
I bet she's happier being on that beach having a fun time rather than having all that stress at work... who wouldn't be? (I'd be sitting in the shade under a tree as I have a sun allergy)
My God, who could complain about something so fabulous? What is wrong with this? I mean her hat is covering her shoulders from the sun. Is that not enough coverage? If you find something provocative in this photo then you are just hoping to find something to turn you on.
Don't say gorgeous. This is not the point. The point is that she can wear anything she like on her OWN TIME. Fuck that makes me angry
This doc seems like she’s more than happy to give a critic an attitude adjustment over her choice of sunbathing attire. I hope there’s a bone specialist in a bathing suit ready help the poor guy.
All women have little black dresses and she looks fabulous in here. What is the big deal? Like Conway Twitty says, she can’t help it if she’s made that way. This, like all the other photos are innocent photos of innocent medical providers.
The hammock isn't complaining about her outfit? I'm not sure you are getting what is going on here? We are saying that a doctor off duty is just a normal person and what she is wearing when not at work is nobody's business
Note: this post originally had 70 images. It’s been shortened to the top 30 images based on user votes.
If I was smart enough to be a doctor and pretty enough to look like a bikini model at the same time, I'd totally show off too and wouldn't give a damn about what other people might think. Also, these surgeons are human beings who have personal lives.. Those who wrote that stupid study clearly weren't able to seperate the private and the working lives of those surgeons and to me, THAT is really unprofessional.
The really unprofessional part for me, was the spying. That's just plain creepy, and, for that matter, frightening
No Jon S. It's creepy af. It's their private lives- accessible or not! Do you want them to just not have private lives and wear full clothing so creepy spying men can't go through their profile and start a sexist studies? Do women and people have to just not have a normal life?
The whole study was unprofessional sexist bullfucky.

It was publicly accessible information and that was why they were looking, to see what potential patients/employers would see. I have no problem with that part of the study, just all the rest.

What is unprofessional is for a "Journal on Vascular Surgery" to even think about publishing a study on social sciences. Can't fathom how this off-topic article made it even to peer review. Or is this one of those "buy to get published - no peer review necessary" journals, in which case professionalism doesn't even come into play.
Exactly. The publisher and the study bros are the unprofessional ones. What a bunch of fuckbags.

Love the comments here: of course we can look smoking hot in our barely-there bikinis .... but how dare you Sir react with a sexualized comment!? Welcome to reality ladies, where the hotter you dress the happier we are .... what were you protesting again? Nobody cares really just keep it up. LOL Sincerely - Men
LOOK EVERYONE - WE'VE GOT A LIVE ONE!!!! No genius, control yourself. The majority of men can look at these images without sexually aroused. It's rapists like you that victim blame because they are unwilling to control themselves. Yes - we all hate you, you are not a man, you are a pathetic excuse for a man
Fuck off, idiot! And maybe keep your creepy balls inside your trousers. We don't wear things for you. Your disgusting behaviour is on you. Fucking knob, I swear!
Sincerely - Men? Eh, no.
Another pointless sexist 'study' by some men with some mental issues. Shocker.
I wonder how many male vascular surgeons cross-dress on the weekends? It might be fun to know, but it is just as relevant to their aptitude as bathing suit style is to female surgeons.
The equivalent to women in swimwear is men in swimwear. The issue is women not their clothes. Men can have their tits out and be deemed appropriate but women can't even wear a full bathing suit haha
You wonder what possessed them to spend time even thinking this up. What the huck... What did they want to proof with this? Other than how bad they are at looking for useful information.
They proved they’re sexist fuckbags with zero professionalism.
The bikini thing is clearly sexist, but I'm more concerned about the "controversial" political and religious opinions. Who TF do these guys think they are to judge other people's opinions? And stalk people on social media... I don't care if my surgeon is white, black or bright green and who they vote for or pray to. I care about them being a good surgeon.
The whole 'study' seems VERY... creepy. They looked at PERSONAL social media profiles and found out that these women are actually people! I am sure that none of them had a bikini-pic as their official medical-group photo, and that they all left their personal opinions outside the operating theater.
They’re clearly anti-sex misogynistic conservatives. I mean, fuck... it’s in everything about this so-called “study”. They included whiny shit like “mocking religion” in their list of “unprofessional” behavior in this bullfucky shitmouth utterly unprofessional “study”. They attacked women for living their own lives and acted like women can’t wear bathing suits because somehow that means SEXYFUNTIMESINNING to these fucking dumbfucks.
how is it even unprofessional if it's out of their work time & place? i 100% agree with you, it's incredibly insulting, disgusting, creepy and stupid
Oathbraker Good response!
Ugh - we get this in teaching too, a lot - a senior staff member at one school actively looked through my (already set-to-private) social media accounts, found I'd done a photoshoot years ago, searched for the photographer's site and his backlog of projects and pulled out a picture of me to show to my colleagues on my first day. But hey, I wasn't nude or anything and I looked damn good XD I already spend 50-60 hours a week devoted to my job, let me have the hobbies I want, eat/drink what I want and wear what I want in my precious free time.
Urgghh, hopefully you could report his creepy stalking to HR.
Absolutely not - he was waaay too senior in the hierarchy, and as my "Professional Mentor" could have made my life hell. Some Professional XD
Sadly that is not a good idea. Female teachers have often been fired for their, usually private, social media accounts.
That’s fucking horrifying. Do you still work for these assholes?
Not that school in particular, but it is commonplace to have rules against what hobbies you do in your freetime. I now teach 16-19 year olds and go out for a few drinks in a different city so I dont accidentally run into a student!
Personally, it makes me happier to know that my Dr. goes to the beach, gets a vacation, plays in the water with their kids, gets some sun and relaxes once in a while. They are people who deserve a break - and are probably better doctors for it!
It really does suicide and depression is really high and doctors male or female. Could you imagine being a doctor these days with a bunch of covididiots and antivaccers.
I'm a nurse and my sister is an MD. We have a lot of conversations about anxiety. At work, we never see a face. Leaving that environment to the real world, where most are not masked is a panic attack waiting to happen. I don't know how the Frontline providers are surviving all the death they encounter.
Wow, puritanism did a lot of damage to people's minds at some point. I wonder how it managed to survive at all... probably by transforming itself into misogyny and hypocrisy :(
And patriarchy! Don't forget the patriarchy.
Very well said!
Puritanism is ignorant fucking crazy shit.

"Unprofessional" would be a doctor of either sex wearing a swim suit in the operating room or treatment room. What people wear at the beach, swimming pool or in their yard has nothing to do with professionalism. And if I'm involved in a medical emergency, I don't care what the doctor or nurse taking care of me is wearing. I just care that they know what they're doing.
Even in the operation room that would only really be unprofessional because of hygiene.
Who the hell funded this study in the first place?
And who the hell let it get through peer review to be published? Need more women on that editorial board for sure
Nobody, probably. It doesn't sound like something that has to be funded, as it costs no money. Just set a student on it.
Or a person qho enjoys stalking hot young female vascular surgeons.
The "study" was probably a psych game to dare medical pros to post their bikini pics in the first place.
Why is it ok for male doctors to post workout routines shirtless w really little shorts but god forbid a women that's in healthcare go swimming or to the beach in a bathing suit! Why are Womens bodies so sexualised until they hit 45 then theyre invisible.
And why is your completely valid comment being downvoted??
K Witmer haha
And why is this completely valid comment getting downvoted????
Ah, the 'inappropriate clothing' line. What you wear at the beach and get photographed wearing has zilch to do with how you perform as a doctor. Patients will not care. But I've seen this stunt pulled before. I worked in quite a progressive organisation that had plenty of rules and support for women in the workplace and my office was all female apart from two men. One was obnoxious the other was fine. Not that this has anything to do with it lol! The ONLY time we had any issue over clothing was after we got a new office manager. One of the younger women was taken aside and told not to wear her skirt again to the office. It was too short, there was too much 'on show' and it would 'distract the men' If you knew the men then you'd know why this is funny lol! The worst thing about this is that the manager was a woman herself. We were all quite taken aback with this. Some women seem to collude with doing down other women, for being women!!
So, according to this study, once you get a medical degree, you are never allowed to go to the beach again, but if you do...don't tell your friends?
This comment is hidden. Click here to view.
I think the idea is you share these kinds of things on private social media posts, not public. We have a strict police about this at my work place. I can say/post anything I like to friends but have to be very careful about what I let random strangers/potential clients see.
they,,,accessed these women's personal accounts??? I don't see your point Jon
why should that matter at all? people are allowed to have lived and share photos & opinions and where whatever the hell they want if it isn't ACTUALLY insulting and/or offending. there is no relation to professionalism and choosing to wear a bathing suit on the beach on a hot summer day.
wear* lives* sorry my spelling was really bad in that comment
So vascular surgeons aren't allowed to have a personal life?
What's most disturbing to me is that these men created fake social media accounts to spy on these women. Talk about creepy!
Emme Magnolia easy
when some men finally wake up & realise that they don't own women's bodies, our bodies get us to A to B, we walk, we swim, we run, we stand, we sit, you get the point, I'm sure they are hundreds of male MD's with shirtless pics on holiday, women wear the equivilant and suddenly it's inappropriate because some men are little pervs who can't control their creepy thoughts and just see a female as a pair of boobs. Women aren't going to cover/apologize for their anatomy and are perfectly covered in a bikini.
Laura Dawson haha
Besides everything that's already been said about the matter, I genuinely don't understand why a PERSONAL account would need to be "professional". If you want professional contents, visit the work account, or an official account. It's not like these pictures were posted on the hospital's official account, we're talking about personal stuff here.
Don't get the jerks who think it's OK to shame women for wearing a bikini. I also don't get the comments "rating " the women.
I am impressed and amazed by these women. I have neither a medical degree nor a bikini body. But these women are rocking both. Wohooooo!!!!!!
Does it affect their work? No. The end.
What's next, is the fact that most of them have tattoos going to cost them their job?
So vascular surgeons aren't allowed to have a personal life?
I have respect for all these women for being medical professionals and standing up for themselves. I applaud them for not taking any sexist bullsh*t... It's the men who did this 'study' that have the REAL problem... the problem that women are going into male dominated disciplines more and more and outperforming their male counterparts.
No one is attacking male medical professionals for wearing Speedos, going to the gym, going to the beach, drinking beer on their off time, etc. Wonder why...
Alarm bells ringing as soon as someone calls women “females“.
If the people who conducted this "study" have a professional degree in medical field, it must be investigated further RIGHT NOW. Because if they cant respect their fellow doctors, they most certainly cannot respect their female patients and that is SCARY. People like them should not be given such important jobs.
I really dont care what these heroes wear in their time off. Its nobodys business but theirs. Shit, they could walk around dressed in tinfoil if they want. The only time it becomes anyone elses business is when they are working. We should hold them up as heroes, that are working their asses off to fight the pandemic at no small risk to them and their families.
I'm going to school right now to be a sonographer (not a doctor, but still a medical professional) and now I'm mentally running through all of my social media and wondering what 'unprofessional' things these sexist, old codgers would find there.
Plenty of stuff, I hope. And that you were having a damn good time when the pictures were taken.
I wonder where the money came from behind that study? Was this grant money?
also, the amount of hate on this is INCREDIBLY astounding! the fact that these people stalked female doctors personal lives and said that what they wore and did on their OWN time is unprofessional is just so completely far from rational that i don't even have words to describe how ridiculous it is, i just can't fathom how a doctors personal choices would have anything to do with how professional she is when she's working.
i don't get why the fuck people would care what someone wears outside of their work time & place, or what they post on their social media. this is fucking ridiculous
Actually, this so-called “study” is openly documented STALKING. Fucking psychos.
Only sexist motherfucking scumbag asshole shitheads make a “study” like this. Only a lazy and ignorant employer lets them fucking publish it (and then acts like it doesn’t represent them when the shit inevitably hits the fan). So fucking *unprofessional*!!! Women and women doctors can wear what ever the fuck they fucking want on their own fucking time!!
This just in.... female medical professionals are actual real people with real lives outside of work. Wow imagine that
These women have the determination to take over the medical and real world one day
Ive said it once and ill say it again. WOMEN HAVE RIGHTS! THEY CAN WEAR WHAT THEY WANT, THEY CAN DO WHAT THEY WANT (in reason with thr law) LAST BUT NOT LEAST WE CAN EAT WHATEVER DA FORK WE WANT
You don't need to respond to trolls.
So vascular surgeons aren't allowed to have a personal life?
Did anyone make the same study with male doctors ore, I don't know, pilots? They are all people and a part of them might write dumb stuff on social media. That said, what's wrong with a bathingsuit? I wouldn't have a problem if my surgeon was a stripper while going to university, as long as they are good at their job right now.

From what is presented here, male surgeons were included in the study. I haven't read the original paper to know if any fell foul of the panels clothing standards.
The inappropriate clothing was explicitly targeted at women
How dare these sexist, misogynistic, jerks!
So, Scott Hardouin, Thomas W. Cheng, Erica L. Mitchell, Stephen J. Raulli, MPhil, Douglas W. Jones, Jeffrey J. I am so incredibly proud of these women. Not only are they brainy but they are all beautiful as hell. Fierce as hell in both work attire and in their bikinis. I am also extremely proud of them for fighting for a women's right to wear whatever the feck she wants out of work. Bikini included. It's not against the law. It's beach wear. Grow up. People are always trying to cover us women up. There are cultures in the world that prove this. Well, I'm glad that in the country I was born in doesn't shame or force women to cover up. Women are women. If you can't control your "sex impulses", seek help FAST cuz you're the problem. Not women.
What scares me, is these dirty and probably old men, went creeping on facebook looking for "sexy" photos of women that they probably either knew or knew of. They would have have a list of names to actually look for them. Makes me feel sick to my stomach. Peeping toms.
When eastern germany was a country of its own, it was pretty common for everybody to bath naked in public, walk around, generally commit FKK, "Freikörperkultur" (literally: free body culture), like sports and stuff - naked. People took photos then, also, just social media (... so-called social media...) wasn't present then. Some say, this was because the fabrics for bathing wear were, like, expensive and rare, but I doubt that.
It never occurred to me that a doctors choice of swimwear made her worth less than her male counterparts. As long as they are good at their job who cares. However, I have to confess that the abundance of bikini shots is a delightful treat.
A well dressed person wears what is appropriate for the occasion. Swim wear , like formal attire is not appropriate for hospital environment. Just like a formal at the beach is acceptable at the beach. Scrubs out side of the hospital could carry diseases that they come in contact with at work.
Some blokes made a 'study' in the form of ogeling women in bikinis and actually had the nerv to publish that?? What are they going to study next: different kind of viagras? Or are they just going to count something in all the soft-porn mags? Theyy shoudl get fired for wasting education ressources.
WTF? These are probably the same type of people who react to rape with "she was obviously asking for it because of what she was wearing. Ugh. Anyway, couple random thoughts, those hair mankinis are actually disturbing. Also, now I want a hot doctor girlfriend. Damn you, you over achieving, beautiful jerks!! /s
To be honest, I wouldn't want to see any of my three doctors in bikinis, either. Don't get me wrong... they are handsome guys and all that, but not really my type.

Wait...what? Sexist study? Has anyone actually read it? Although the study is absurd and judgemental, there is not a hint of sexism in it. In fact, the study found that 68% of the surgeons identified were male. If you are going to fight for gender equality, choose the right battles.
Did anyone consider that this survey is just an attempt to get sexy nurses and doctors to share photos of themselves? People have gone through more to satisfy their fetish.

Honestly, are we still in like 17th century? I wouldn't waste a word on people shaming me, let alone make a whole such long article (I really don't have time or patience to read it). There will be always, always people who will shame you for whatever reason they find, because they probably enjoy it. Don't waste time on them. Just don't.
Why let them spout their aweful opinions unchallenged ? Some people will be affected by them: some people will agree with them. We need to actively tell them that this kind of shit is not acceptable, otherwise it will not stop,
I tried that many many and many times. I just got annoyed, stressed and people were attacking me all over. I don't want to waste my time on fools anymore. I am almost 50, I am done. Respect my opinion, don't just freaking downvote me! That is why I never argue and hardly ever post anything on social media and portals. It's just devastating to look at people hating you or pressing minuses to your own opinion like it's a game. It's not! I wasted a lot of my life arguing with idiots. It's my own right to quit it. I regret even writing anything here at all.

I am having huge problem understanding what is supposed to be sexist about the study. There are no genders mentioned at all. What is much bigger problem for me is that the study is connecting improperly those people professions to the activities at leisure time, while most of those activites mentioned at pretty normal. Also the definition is really odd ... what are "controversial social topics" and "inappropriate attire"? To me it seems that the biggest problem of the study is that it is a load of political correctness bs indicing that you cannot discuss something because it is deemed controversial, inappropriate, offensive or whatever. There goes freedom of speech ....

Has anybody, including those outraged women above, actually read the study? Yes, the authors' definition of 'inappropriate attire' is questionable. But the overarching theme - 'inappropriate social media behaviour' is legit and was not limited to attire only. The study included both men and women (and their attire). I also believe using aliases in social media accounts and viewing publicly available information is neither illegal nor morally inacceptable since the authors did not reveal the identity of anyone. Rather, it is unprofessional to criticise the authors without fact-checking. Having said that, I am well aware that sexism in medicine exists.
It's simple- it doesn't matter what you do with your free time as long as it's not illegal. And drinking alcohol, wearing bikini, and *gasp* having opinions is not illegal. I don't see how this should affect someone's career. Learn to separate your private life from your job.
I agree that it's your choice to do whatever you want in your free time as long as it's not illegal. However, this study was not sexist in that it targeted women only - it also included men. The author's definitions of inappropriate social media behaviour may be questionable (they certainly are regarding wearing swimwear). However, I think it would be legit to question the professionality of someone who appears to be frequently intoxicated or expresses discriminatory opinions on social media. I certainly hope that this kind of private behaviour would negatively affect someone's career.
When some foreigners apply for American visa they check every social media account for detailed analysis about the person. What he likes/ dislikes, social circle, lifestyle and every private thing.
See, the thing is no one should care what a person posts on their personal social media. It has nothing to do with their ability to do their job.
Ok...so, where, pray tell, were the men featured in bathing suits? IMO, women actually cover up a bit more than men when swimming, we cover both the top and bottom...men usually only don a pair of shorts. What is really "unprofessional" are doctors rummaging through their fellow doc's pages to find them on holiday in a swim suit, or God forbid...drinking a glass of wine on the beach!! OH NO!! How 'inappropriate" for women in their late 20's and up to be consuming a legal beverage in their free time....whilst wearing a *gasp* bathing suit!! The absolute horror of it all! Whatever will we do? *aggressively clutches pearls*

You may believe that what they did wasn't immoral your opinion is no more valid than anyone elses. I believe that what gets posted on social media is that person's business only. Sure others might see it but to me it's no different than going swimming - sure someone might see me in my swimming shorts but it's MY business only. Actively seeking these pictures only makes it worse! Exactly. The publisher and the study bros are the unprofessional ones. What a bunch of fuckbags.
