There have been quite a few awesome Disney reimaginings. From hot dogs to ethnic beauties, we’ve seen their characters in all sorts of ways. God bless fan art.
Recently, 29-year-old artist Yudelmis “Yudie” San Emeterio has joined the trend, starting her own series. The former specimen processor at a private lab who is currently finishing up her art degree is giving Disney princesses modern ‘glow ups’ and posting the results on her TikTok where they are generating millions of views and likes.
“When I saw people giving makeovers to Disney characters, I couldn’t help myself! My main goal with my videos is to keep the changes in the transformation as close as possible to the style and texture of the original art,” she told BuzzFeed.

Belle
@vanotyartsSaw people doing “glow ups” of Disney characters so I decided to do my own. I went for a more subtle change! ##disneyprincess ##artchallenge ##belle♬ Strawberry Shortcake – Melanie Martinez

Mulan
@vanotyartsI knew that I wanted to do something more dramatic for Mulan, and I love the “ABG” look, so… ##abg ##mulan ##disneyprincess ##gloupdisney♬ Candy – Doja Cat

Tiana
@vanotyartsAs much as I like the blue and green dresses in the film, I think pink was made for Tiana 😍 ##tiana ##disneyprincess ##gloupdisney ##artchallenge ##art♬ Talk – Khalid

@vanotyartsAladdin is probably the only Disney movie I have never seen and I’m ashamed of myself 🤭 Jasmine is 😍 though. ##aladdin ##princessjasmine ##gloupdisney♬ B.S. – Jhené Aiko, H.E.R.

Rapunzel
@vanotyartsThe trickiness with 3D edits is that they’re a bit more involved, but Rapunzel is worth it ❤️ ##rapunzel ##disneyprincess ##gloupdisney♬ GREEDY x TREASURE – conradrocha

“Like most people in my age group, I grew up heavily invested in Disney films,” Yudelmis told Bored Panda. “Even now as an adult, I rarely miss a new release! Maybe it’s the nostalgia aspect of it, but Disney movies always tend to illicit strong emotions within me. I am that person bawling as soon as the opening credits roll; it’s pretty embarrassing.”
The artist agreed that transforming Disney characters in some way or another is not a new concept. “There are many fan edits out there similar to it; so I wanted to go in from the angle of keeping it as close to the original texture and style as possible. It’s more challenging than people realize, especially when working off a 3D still. It’s a lot of painting!” she said.
Yudelmis will usually start a piece by thinking about the character she wants to transform. “Sometimes I’ll take cues from personality traits, but most of the time it’s about creating a (hopefully) flattering final product. I don’t always know what’s on trend, so Google is my best friend. We spend a lot of time together.”
Yudie also included Jane from Tarzan
@vanotyartsOut of all the female leads in Disney, I resonate with Jane the most. I’m still waiting for my Tarzan, though 😂 ##disneyprincess ##gloupdisney ##jane♬ Tarzan Medley: You’ll Be in My Heart / Two Worlds / Strangers Like Me / Trashin’ the Camp – Anthem Lights

As fun as Disney transformations are, Yudelmis said her passion lies in drawing and painting. That’s why she’s thinking about expanding the series, including more real-life people. “Videos like the Ariana Grande one tend to be more fulfilling for me since the art is all mine, so it’s something I want to explore more in the near future. Imagine Jason Mamoa as a Disney cartoon character!”
Disney started its first princess movie with Snow White and the Seven Dwarf all the way back in 1937. Since then, Disney princess movies have developed their signature elements. The movies usually have nice soundtracks, the characters are accompanied by cute animals and the main theme is good versus bad. Apart from that, the movies also contain strong messages about the importance of family relationships.
The evolution of Disney princesses is significantly related to the evolution of gender roles in society as well. In the early years, for example, Snow White and Cinderella were portrayed graceful, hardworking and at the same time, committed to accomplishing their house chores. But in the early 90s, Disney princesses were very much different. Belle in Beauty and the Beast and Arial in the Little Mermaid were portrayed as being smart, outgoing, and possessing a strong will. Some of the most recent Disney princess movies such as Tangled, Brave, Frozen, and Moana represent the female lead character even more independent, brave.
Regardless of how you feel about the studio itself, nobody can’t deny the importance of Disney princesses, and their ability to reflect modern society’s take on womanhood. And Yudelmis is changing up their hair, makeup, and wardrobe in an attempt to reflect it even better.
And is expanding the series with some real-life people too

Here’s what people said about the ‘glow ups’
I think at BP headquarters, they have a big number under a board saying "days without Disney's princesses articles" and when it gets to high, the editor panicks and pushes the red emergency red "Disney princess" button on his desk.
So, on one hand, Bored Panda has run articles explaining how bad TikTok is, all its stealing of private data, how it tracks you, etc, which all goes back to China. On the other hand "look at this cute TikTok viral video" stuff!
Honestly... Your comment is just as unoriginal. The same whining on every Disney post. I don't understand why you guys even click on the article for Christ's sake
Load More Replies...She really missed the mark on the Mulan one; Mulan's whole thing is that she doesn't want to be traditionally feminine and what does the artist do? Give her pounds of eye makeup and eyelashes and a super girly top. There's plenty of cool androgynous people on TikTok she could have based her on.
I thought she was off with that one too. The makeup is fine, Mulan didn't want to avoid looking feminine, but the long hair is very unpractical, and she is a practical character in my opinion
Load More Replies...Why did Mulan became Triad/Yakuza? Tattoos in with asian especially China/Japan/Korea is still not accepted
Wait... so she takes someone else´s work... changes few things and then posts it as her own? Or how does she present it? Haven´t watch the videos and don´t want to. I would watch out for Disney lawyers if I were her.
You will not get copyright issue for fanart even you sold it for your own pocket
Load More Replies...i mean her style is very well done & beautiful but these just feel gross to me? i mean i fully believe people should be able to do whatever they want with their body and use makeup or not etc, but the fact that she felt the need to add extra make up the any of them is kinda just not my thing? it feels like it goes hand in hand with the whole "women have to wear makeup to be beautiful" thing 🙄 even though the whole altering the princesses look is pretty overdone i still think it could be a fun concept to work with this just feels like it missed the mark and is lacking creativity a bit. i really dont mean to sound harsh i really do appreciate her style this just isnt for me & i hope she grows more in the creative direction 😖
Exactly! In that outfit, Cindy looks like she's going on a date or something, not sweeping floors!
Load More Replies...I don't see the point really, they are girls of the eras the stories are set in.
not to be a jerk, but it's so obvious where the editing is. it's not seamless at all. it's a poorly executed trope that's done to death. i don't see why this has an article. nobody cares about these "reimagined disney princesses." downvote me all you want but while i may not be the most polite i'm not wrong.
I don't remember the Disney movie with all the prostitutes.... (JK)
My favorite was probably Rapunzel, but alll of these are so great! I wish I was this talented as an artist when most of my drawings end up looking like a pile of dog (you know the rest lol)
Title is a bad mismatch. This is not updating to a modern woman. These women look no more realistic, just a different stylization. It should be called 'reimagines Disney princesses in her own style'. Otherwise, it's a letdown.
They mean the clothing style is more similar to 2020 fashion
Load More Replies...Ok, these are just fantastic!! I don't always like reimaging of the princesses but these are gorgeous! Great job!!! <3
Women have certainly made huge strides forward. But only in hair styles apparently.. This is silly and pathetic.
sry but the modern Rapunzel looks EXACTLY like one of the snobby girls at my school
Mean while my friends 14 year old just referred to her own ics on a birthday invitation as gross, being influenced by all this make up, and photoshoped pics of how girls must look to be beautiful. It is not “natural beauty” just a current cultural idea, that all that makeup is nescessary. Princess ideas harm little girls selfesteem.
Personally I love Mulan's tattoos, but I hear many Asian countries are still very against them.
Tiana was an African American princess, she looked Hispanic in that interpretation. My favorite was Cinderella. All in all, not bad.
These are great work, but what is she using, is that a light board? I seem to have autoplaying on TikTok videos blocked on my security settings still. Too lazy to mess with it at the moment. Someone tell me what that is she is using? TY
