All of our favorite movies went a long way before they were developed into the final flick. At the very beginning, each of them was just a simple concept born in a filmmaker's mind which had to be communicated to a variety of different professionals involved in the process. How do they do that, you may wonder? Well, probably the easiest way is just to sketch out what they created with their imagination.
Clearly, pre-visualization is an important part of filmmaking. Envisioning how something will look and actually seeing it are two different things. So, to create the best possible sequence of actions for a movie, creators use storyboards to show the whole progress. Storyboarding usually doesn't require any drawing skills. As long as you are able to send the idea across, you're good to go. That's why so many famous directors aren't afraid to make rough and loose sketches for the masterpieces they are creating. Of course, some of them hire professional storyboarding artists who make the movie look just as good on paper as they will look on film.
We here at Bored Panda decided to explore the world of movie pre-visualization and gathered some interesting sketches of well-known movies. Scroll below for the list!

Inception (2010)
Midsommar (2019)
I think it's Swedish/American. There are several swedish actors/actresses in the movie and it happens in Sweden.
Load More Replies...WOW. no offense to the artist, but you can't do Florence like that. Man.
I thought story boards wew done typically before casting?
Load More Replies...It's fine, maybe even preferable for storyboard face proportions to be a bit cartoonish. It can convey to people involved the emotion and look wanted without too much wasted time or an overly prescriptive instruction restricting the actors. What's sad is the difference in costume. This suggested is so much more precious in it's details, which I tend to prefer. I haven't seen the movie, so maybe there's a reason they decided to simplify it.
Load More Replies...Forrest Gump (1994)
Mâdadayo (1993)
It (2017)
No Country For Old Men (2007)
Parasite (2019)
Hellboy (2004)
Taxi Driver (1976)
Avatar (2009)
Ran (1985)
Kurosawa (the director) painted all the scenes himself during a seven year period, and then went to look for funding to actually realize his vision.
Logan (2017)
Ali (2001)
The Nun (2018)
Pacific Rim (2013)
Justice League (2017)
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
The Conjuring 2 (2016)
A lot of these are single drawings. They don’t look like storyboards. The storyboard ones are amazing.
Pretty misleading title for the article since most of these look to be drawn by the storyboard artist for the film, rather than the director themselves. For example, I have the behind the scenes book on the making of Pacific Rim and #16 literally comes from the chapter on storyboarding the film, with storyboards being done by artist Rob McCallum, not Guillermo Del Toro.
Also from these 26 titles I wouldn't say more than ten could be considered 'iconic' movies.
