While we sit back, relax and enjoy the slow-passing time at a restaurant table, slowly devouring a savory appetizer, impatiently dreaming of the meal we’re about to be served fresh straight from the kitchen, things can go wrong on the other side of the curtain. Although we’d like to think we are 100 percent sure of the restaurant’s quality, freshness, and hygiene—after all, it’s buzzing with people and you couldn’t trick them, right?—this is not always the case.
In fact, the restaurant industry and especially the very core of it—the holy kitchen—is notorious for keeping its secrets tight shut. The good and the bad ones. From reheated shrimp cocktail to restaurant staff having nicknames for regular customers, to a chef that cooks expensive meals 11 hours a day only to have dino nuggies at home.
Thanks to the subreddit “Kitchen Confidential,” there are a lot of stories to discover about the daily bread and butter of food industry professionals, so we selected the most interesting ones below. Scroll down and after you’re done, be sure to check out more kitchen confidential posts right here!

So Many Orders, So Few Tips
As an ex-vangelical (means I used to be a Christian) who knew these people from church very well, I can confirm this.
Load More Replies...My grandpa used to make fun of religion like, "people can be assholes 6 days a week and then think they can go to church and repent and be OK." And that has always stuck with me..
Evangelical christisns are the most hypocritical, non religious, racist people in this country. Their support of Trump, who makes Satan look good, are a pox on this country that will destroy us while not paying taxes, since they are a political group using religion as it's cover.
Mercifully I live in England, where after-church crowds don't exist
Same here in the Netherlands. After church you go home or to family.
Load More Replies...There's a church near me with a café in it. Every Sunday it is closed due to the congregation being total c*nts to the staff
This is true absolute truth. Uglier than normal and blatantly apparent they go for show. Most definitely leave Jesus at the door of the church when they leave.
I am ashamed to say I have been to lunch after church and seen this crazy rudeness. You should start posting them online (full face). Maybe if they see themselves they'll do better.
Yep, worked in the service industry. I concur. Could tell you horror stories about Sundays.
Husband Mike asked me if I was OK (again) staying home all the time. We went to Kroger yesterday and at around 12:45 it got crazy. I was in pure hell. There is no personal space with church people. Reaching over me. Touching me! Why are church people so freaking rude on Sunday after church? The energy changed so dramatically within 10 minutes, when church people started rolling in. Mike said he was afraid I was going to literally take a woman's head off. I was reaching to put bananas in cart. 2 feet of space between my stomach and cart, with hand out, 3 inches from cart, to put bananas in cart, he was pushing toward me. This lunatic reached between me and cart, to the banana display. It's 20 feet of freaking bananas, and she had to have THAT bunch of bananas. Apparently if looks could kill, b***h woulda been smoldering on floor... WTF? Can't wait literally 12 seconds for me to move? Mike handed me key to truck and requested I go wait. He didn't want to have to bail me out after beating someone with 5 pounds of potatoes. He decided I was much better staying home. Second time we've been in a grocery store on Sunday and I've almost strangled a good Christian exhibiting totally unacceptable behavior. I've decided there are demons slinking around under the pews of churches. Sliding from person to person licking their ankles and putting little bits of evil into them as they suck out little bits of their souls.
What souls ? They were sucked out when they were children.
Load More Replies...Reason #796 why religion should be abolished. People would have to own their terrible behavior.
Or maybe we just stop being human. It is not the religion it is the person
Load More Replies...i find it wierd how some christians literally cherry pick the bible and don't practice what they preach. good manners are literally the core of some religions, like mine
Humans. Poison. Everything. Not religion
Load More Replies...I was living in Memphis when the Southern Baptist convention came to town. Restaurant sales were down due to the "good" Christians not drinking and slow overturn of tables. But guess what- the liquor stores were quite busy selling pints of everything
Just a gentle reminder that many of us Christians are NOT evangelicals. 🇨🇦.
Load More Replies...So true!!! 8.5 years of working in a pub, I can say the same. Absolutely vile lot.
As someone who truly has a relationship with Jesus, I'm so sorry on the behalf of those who actually do have a real relationship with Christ. Those people that you've ran into that acted like this, are kind of like the Karen's that say they know the manager when they don't. It is truly infuriating to those of us who genuinely know Him. Even the Bible says, to be the highest you MUST be the lowest servant. Maybe they missed that part at church. SMH
Indeed some (not all) people professing religions are hypocrites and don't follow any of the commandments - such as "thou shalt not lie"....
Hard agree. I would dread Sunday's. Crying servers, Jesus pamphlets for tips, microwaving soup over and over until it could melt steel beams.
Agreed. Worked for a buffet chain and Sundays were the worst. 50-100 churchgoers descend between 9-11 am all wanting special treatment. They would destroy the restaurant, eat ALL the food, and barely tip if at all. I was the cashier, so I didn't get it too bad except for when people had to wait for tables.
And they try to tip with religious pamphlets and tiny bibles. Oddly enough, my landlord will not take tiny bibles as payment for rent.
that's bc religion is the "BANE" of humanity, followed very closely by social media.
The only bane is the human not the religion
Load More Replies...All is forgiven, the ledger is empty. They need a headstart. So come next Sunday, the trip to God's house is worth the gas.
Yep. I was a college student working night shifts at a home for severely disabled children. My car once broke down in the middle of a busy intersection on a Sunday morning. Skads of people driving to church flew by as I tried to steer and push it out of the way all by myself. Finally, a guy who, like me, was heading home after a night shift, stopped to help.
I was working a grocery store years ago on a Sunday. This lady came in & told me I was going to HELL because I was working on a Sunday. I told her that I had to be there why was she here? The customers behind her cheered. lol
As far as i know USA is only country in the world where a guest have to tipp the vaitress.where i live tipping a servant was a crime not-that-long ago, they also have to pay taxes from tipps
The old men used to pat my butt, leave a $5. While he was at the register, the wife would march over and take it and glare at me. I just figured that was one less bj she had to do for spending money and felt bad for her.
agreed. my cafe is just behind a church, it's not a problem now as the congregation fell apart, but for years they'd come to us after church and (apart from one family who were some of my favourite customers), every one of them was rude and entitled. i always joked that it was like they got all their sins confessed for the week, so they could start on some new ones.
That's not true! Those people are able to be abominable 24/7, not just after church.
Actually, that's a decent metric. Remembering my time among religious people I'd say the nicer people went home to cook up a big brunch/barbecue while the mean ones went out to eat. Also, why are they always surprised when there's a wait for seating Sunday after church?
Load More Replies...Oh my goodness yes. Worked at a steak house chain decades ago as a teenager. Had to pull a double shift on Easter Sunday. Tipping was not permitted and even at that we made a little below minimum wage. Place was packed on Easter; who knew? Most of the people were rude. Many ate their steak and then said it was "all fat". Yes, there were a couple of strips of fat on the plate but the rest was eaten. We were required to provide a brand new steak because the customer is always right. I could not believe so many people were so mean and entitled on Easter Sunday. While clearing tables, on top of many other duties throughout the day, a family left me a brand new smiley-face pencil that read "Smile God Loves You". Actually did make me smile and laugh. Got me thru the day. Why are so many people rude and crazy when they just come from church? Do they feel they are absolved and can start a brand new week of crazy and entitled?
I've noticed. Absolutely disgusting manners towards anyone, really.
You are so right. We called them the God Squad. And that's coming from a Christian.
Ok, Karen chill I know you just came from church but that doesn't mean that your son can get free food.
This is nothing new. I worked at a pizza joint back in the late 80's & early 90's and they were this way. The worst was the youth pastors adopted son running around the restaurant and pouring soda into the salt and pepper shakers and the asshat pastor/father not doing a damned thing about it. We finally changed to sealed shakers and the little asshat tried with those and ended up making a mess on the tables.
Just my thoughts, not THE answer.....but mostly I agree with this observation. I know many Christians who act like judgmental, self righteous butts. I am a Christian though and act NOTHING like what some people are condemning church goers for. So, what generation are these rude Christians from???? Because from what I see, it's those who are about 50 and up that are the mean ones! So maybe it's a generational thing and not necessarily all those who go to church?! I'm 42 for the record, go to church on Sunday, and then out to eat. My husband and I are very very thoughtful, polite, appreciative, tip well and so on. Please don't label all Christians as being rude buttwipes because we're not. But I know a lot of older people who are.
And on top, drive slooowly in the fast lane, getting in the way of those that have to work swing-shift on a Sunday.
Of course. They're better than you because Baby Jebus thinks they're special. /s
Yes!! And as a Christian it makes me sick. Several years ago I worked weekends for a year to pay off bills and I just wanted to approach them so bad and tell them how embarrassed I was. The church members I grew up with were the complete opposite-don't lose the faith. There are good ones out there!!
I'm not really sure what else you would expect. Except maybe whenever my ex-MiL is there.
I never understood this but it's definitely true. Back when I would go to restaurants after church with the youth group I would tell them not to be s**t flinging monkeys and to leave a decent tip.
I am amazed there is a sunday after mass crowd. Here that would be 4-5 seniors(Sweden) US, i suppose?
Not all us Christian’s go to mass, just Catholics. 🇨🇦

I noticed this is the most dangerous time for riding a bicycle around a small town as well.
It's kind of amazing how the rules that criticize us for breaking never seem to apply to them. I think they are just grumpy at those of us who enjoy what they have to work so hard to hide It's hard keeping all those lies straight.
There are also restaurants that decide ahead of time that you're a stingy tipper if you're female and unaccompanied. I had my stew slammed on the table so hard that gravy was dripping from my eyelashes. Perhaps eating out is one of the few pleasures the OTHER underpaid members of society allow themselves. Cheers!
Well said Beatrice. As an old white affluent Christian church-going undemanding lady I overtop and often get dreadful service. 🇨🇦

There are many reasons why people love eating out. We like the fun of it, the change of place and atmosphere, the opportunity to see people and meet friends, to dress up and relax, forget about things back home or at work, treat ourselves, or simply save time. All are solid reasons just showing how much we all waited for the restaurants, eateries and cafes to open again after the worldwide lockdowns.
Having said that, we can't ignore the obvious—it’s getting pretty darn expensive to eat out. Restaurant prices have increased by 5.8% since the beginning of 2021, which is the highest 12-month increase since 1982. This is because groceries got more expensive this year, with the overall cost rising by 6.4%, which is the largest 12-month jump since 2008. The numbers are mind-blowing. Just think of it—the cost of beef has risen most, with a 20.9% jump. Overall, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that consumer price inflation for goods across the board has risen by 6.8%.

Good Work, Tyler!
What does that mean to us? Well, eating nice and well is getting very costly. This applies to both restaurant meals and home dinners, and even breakfast plates. Especially if we’re talking about nutritious and well-balanced diets. It’s no secret that many people are convinced, probably more than ever, that eating cheap and healthy is impossible, and that healthy foods cost an arm and a leg.
To find out how true that is, Bored Panda spoke with Charlie Middleton, a lecturer in Nursing at the University of Dundee. Charlie has a broad area of interests including health inequalities, nutrition, and the early years of life.“One example is how certain foods are marketed as so-called 'superfoods' ( i.e. avocado) and are given higher price tags, but many very nutritious foods are actually very cheap,” she told us. “Another is the way researchers have measured the cost of food... Consider two bars of chocolate, one regular and one with less fat. If we use a price-per-calorie measurement, the lower-fat chocolate bar seems more expensive because it contains fewer calories.”

Not As Good As Some I've Seen, But It's Mine And I'm Proud
I Don't Disagree With This
However, the studies comparing prices per unit weight of food from the same food group reveal interesting results. “They show how healthy options are often cheaper—for example, if we think about a source of protein; 200 g of chickpeas versus 200 g of chicken breast. Chickpeas are often priced cheaper than a chicken breast.”
When asked what cheap and nutritious products we should all add to our grocery shopping bag, Charlie said that there are many things. “In general, plant-based products cost less than meat or fish, but tinned products can be cheap and nutritious options if these are a part of your diet. Vegetables in season are often cheaper than others. At this time of the year in the UK, root vegetables are very cheap and affordable. Dried red lentils (for example) are store cupboard ingredients that cost pence and can be kept for years. Frozen vegetables also keep for long periods and remain nutritious.”

Just A Friendly Reminder That It's Ok To Quit Your Job
Some skeptics claim that cheap and healthy meals take ages to prepare and that’s their biggest disadvantage. But Charlie argues the opposite. “Lots of cheap and healthy foods can be cooked in minutes. Tinned tomatoes make a great base for a pasta sauce and cost a lot less than processed sauce. Add seasonal vegetables and legumes to increase the nutrition. Batch cooking for the week ahead, and freezing portions also saves time,” she concluded.

If work environments would be less toxic people wouldn't flee their job to search for a better one. It is all a matter of how people are treated and paid. But unfortunately hire and fire plus exploitation is still the essence of capitalism in the US. And politicians won't change that as they get bribery from companies to keep the status quo.
Just knowing humans like that exist is frustrating. How we treat people matters and if it weren't for the horrible people in this world. The rest of us would be existing and thriving just fine.
