Young Designer Accuses Moschino Of Copying Her Entire Collection, And The Photos Speak For Themselves
When it comes to fashion, there is a very thin line between inspiration and plagiarism. So much so that famous brands lines like Zara and Dior have been under fire for plagiarizing smaller designer’s work, but it doesn’t stop there. Recently, a designer clothes house Moschino was accused of stealing another artist’s work, and the similarity between the two is undeniable.
Edda Gimnes, a young London-based clothes designer took to Facebook to share her disappointment after seeing Moschino’s latest collection. In her Facebook post, she claims that the famous fashion house copied her work without her permission. What makes it even worse is that about a year ago she met someone from Moschino and showed them her work, which makes the entire copycat situation even more shady.
Quickly following her post, designer Jeremy Scott, and the creative director behind Moschino took to Instagram to deny the copyright law allegations and said that his collection was entirely inspired by previous Moschino’s collections and there’s no copyright infringement of any sort.

Scott has a valid point and his answer is completely acceptable. They've been doing it for years, so if anything, she was copying Moschino, not the other way around. But I think you can't copyright doodling, so no infringement here.
As a designer (but not fashion) I have to say that the similarity between these works is almost non-existent. It doesn't require an "eye for detail" to notice differences. A vague similarity is not a copy. One has to wonder if the designer even comprehends the concept of "copy". The only way one could validly say these are the same is if you are blind as a bat. In the examples shown there isn't even a similarity in the cut of any clothing. Fwiw, some cosplayers have been doing the "scribble/sketchy look" thing for years. From the examples in the response Moschino made, they have been doing it probably longer than Gimnes has been alive. So... who copied who?
I agree completely. They're not at all similar except for similar color schemes (which might have been proof of her claim if said color schemes were more unique, but here it's only black and white and some pink, it's super basic) and using the same style, which is nothing new and the company has shown proof that they've been using for a long time. I also think it's quite hypocritical of her to think they need to credit her for "inspiration" when she claims her designs to be completely her originals when she did not invent the style - where is her credit to her sources of inspiration? Nothing is created from nothing, ever. And more often than not creators will take inspiration for a lot of places, and not a single source. Unless it looks nearly the same with minor differences, it's not a copy.
Load More Replies... Her textile designs are VERY inspired by Moschino and other brands who used the scribble look hugely popular in the 80s. (I work in the fashion industry, if that matters.) She didn't invent scribbles. But she is talented and understands trends and colorways and proportion. Just let it go and get a job with a brand that appreciates your talent.
Ugly is ugly. I mean, if you have a case then certainly defend your style. But don't expect this trash to make any money from real sales.

When I looked at them . . . what she created I would not wear in a million years. No shape and one dress looks like a potato sack. Moschino may have been inspired by her color schemes but that's about it. His rendition is much more stylish and sophisticated. Keep trying and I hope you make it. Your patterns though are very unflattering. The colors are great
I think the same. The big hats and the shapeless dresses are not what a person with fashion sense would ever wear. And who would wear those shoes. But chic little suits and dresses are alway in style.

I thought the same... and sorry, but I wouldn't like to have them even if she gives them to me by free. They are (sorry, my only personal opinion) ugly, not only unwearable.

It all reminds me of the I Love Lucy episode in which Lucy and Ethel want the designer fashions they're seeing on their trip to Paris. Ricky and Fred use horse feed buckets and burlap and make them outfits. At the end, very similar designs are on the fashionable ladies of Paris, copied from when someone saw them on the "girls." lucy-in-pa...e247a6.png 
I think more than anything is the fact that they met, which probably inspired the designs. I think that is where the anger lies. I think had this not happened, the designer would not be outraged.
Exactly. The problem here is not similarity itself, it's the events before the fashion line was launched. That's the real point here and a very important detail to the story.

The 'young designer' should have studied up on her fashion history, and realized she was doing nothing new. She probably wasn't contacted further after her one meeting because they saw nothing new in her work!

20 years ago, i was crying because a girl copied a drawing from my gallery and post it as her own on hers. My dad told me that if i didn't wanted my work stolen, then i shouldn't have place it on the web. That it wasn't really stolen as i had the original at home. I thought he was being mean, but i later understood the wisdom on his words. Everybody copies from somebody from somewhere, we even learn to walk and speak by copying from our parents. So, let it go.
To my eyes, the designs are do dissimilar to be claimed as copies. Different cuts, different scribbles, different colours.
I think the best way to decide if Moschino stole her ideas is to look at Moschino's past few collections (prior to this designer's visit where she naively showed them all of her designs). If Moschino's prior collections did not resemble this one, then I'd say it's a hell of a lot more than coincidence that they came up with these strikingly similar designs after viewing hers.
No fan of Jeremy Scott or Moschino, but they didn't steal anything. Gimnes was using an already established technique. Get off the cross... someone else needs the wood.

as an artist i have to say that sometimes two people can have the exact or very similar idea without knowing each other.. we are humans after all and our brains work the same way... i see where the accusations are coming from but the moschino designer also as a really valid point... and scribbles look like scribbles.. they all look similar to me..
here in finland this is common thing to do similar but not exact copy, it is legal, comics design clothes everything. Lacoste has been best example of this phenomenon, when tail is wrong direction is legal ...

If ANYone was "copied" - it was Moschino! The styles are SOOO different - only the materials/patterns are even near. I've been around a looooong time, and these things keep going around, sooooo - lets go back 50 years and see who's closer to the beginning?
I used to work for a tableware company owned and operated by the most narcissistic person I have ever met. She created (with the help of the very talented graphic arts department) a design featuring Cherry Blossoms. She had a fit when another company came out with a similar pattern (different, but featuring Cherry Blossoms) because she had invented Cherry Blossoms. Um, what now? You invented Cherry Blossoms? The ones that have been featured for centuries in Asian art? It's now a family joke - when someone rips of an idea you yell "But I INVENTED Cherry Blossoms!"
The issue is that she had an interview and then this work comes out. Unfortunately I do personally know someone else this has happened to, but they couldn't complain because they had to sign an NDA and then the company just went quiet on them- and then something very similar to their work came out without any credit given to them (the work was more similar than this). So yes, her work may not have been completely original, but what is now? However this stuff really does happen, and however much we want to give companies the benefit of the doubt, it would be naive to think this thing doesn't happen (whether it did or did not in this case).

As I see, this case a bit fuzzy. Its no secret that designers used to inspire one another, nothing come from blank slate these days. But designer/superstar designer love to make it look like it. I read that scribbled pattern already exist decades ago. The Designer probably took inspiration from it. What interesting is the fact that she brought her design & sketches to Moschino only for that style to appear a year later. There's probability that Jeremy scott/Moshino look at her sketches and inspired them to bwork with this style again. They didnt have to, but they could give her some credit because this whole fiasco turned into bad PR for the brand. Its not copyright infringement but this case put some question into into Jeremy scott/Moschino visionary image.
I don't see huge similarity in the work. In most cases the fabrics share the same colors, but the shape is entirely different. The brand name outfits do not look like copies.
Take away the pattern and there’s is no similarity. The moschino pattern appears typically moschino too. Perhaps her designs were the inspiration to do the scribble again? SImilar but not a copy?

How would a job recruiter steal her designs unless she left them behind (which is highly unlikely)? It is also unlikely she met with Jeremy Scott himself. She is more inspired by Moschino and the 1980s scribble print craze than they are inspired by her.

Why would an international fashion house like Moschino copy designs from an unknown? I really don't see the similarities, apart from the colour pallet but you can't call dibs on colours, that's absurd.
I see a similarity in all of it but not an exact copy---in my untrained eyes---at best inspiration from the past on all of their parts. Look far enough back and there will be similarities back into the 60s...but probably slows/stops around there...when people started doing more drugs. ha
My mother was a designer one of the first women to graduate FIT in NY, so I know fashion. I am not a “fashion” designer. I am a floral designer and decorator. This young artist was ripped off. Her designs and even down to the colors , scribble art and shoes are obviously a big part of this new moschino collection. He stole her s**t! No doubt! Especially since she showed him all of her designs back in November , almost a year ago. He’s a hack!
