This Care Home In Britain Was Modelled Like The Past To Make Dementia Patients Feel At Home

It is estimated that 13% of those aged over 80 suffer from the effects of dementia, an umbrella term that covers a broad category of degenerative brain diseases including Alzheimer’s. We ran a story a few months back about a company that recreated doors of people’s houses to assist dementia patients, but this is on another level.

This care home in Yorkshire, England, has taken a novel step in assisting its residents suffering from the condition, recreating street scenes from the past in order to stimulate familiar and happy memories.

“We put in lots of different reminiscence shop fronts to act as areas of interest and discussion. This encourages families and residents to talk about their memories”, Laurence Garton, Development Director of Yorkare, told Metro.

While some care homes can be depressing, sterile places where people basically go to die, this one is designed to keep residents active and engaged, and live out their days in a manner as close to normal home life as possible. “We try to create as many different areas within the Home that allow the residents to do what they always would’ve done and for their visitors to be involved with them,” Garton says.

The luxurious care home has 78 rooms and they don’t come cheap, going at £700 a week all inclusive. Still, if you’ve done well in life and can afford it, this is the kind of place that makes the thought of getting old seem much less of a drag. Cocktails anyone?

Even with conversion to dollars, it costs less than the cheapest/most depressing of care homes in Canada. I know where I'm retiring to!

Before you get all worked up, and soil your pants, you'd better find out what the actual costs will be for you. I've already gone to several different places and I have found No reference to costs. This is not part of the British Single Payer system. And as the old saying goes, "If you have to ask how much it costs, you probably can't afford it". Just saying............

This place resembles a kids play place near me. Funny how similar environments kids and elderly can be.

It would be great (I guess?) if everybody had access to quality care. The investment is huge for something that needs updating so regularly. Mixed feelings about this.

Great, only rich elderly get treated as people. The poor elderly get dumped in nursing homes.

I've been in long term care facilities like this all over the US. Very common here.

Sorry, but I'm gonna off myself before I have to be put in a home. I'm not going to give all of my money away to this instead of leaving something for my family, or even worse, leaving them in debt.

Wait? This is new? The home I worked at 17 years ago was decorated this way. Including a cobblestone "road" that residents had a difficult time maneuvering their wheelchairs over.

They need to pay for professional care. The nurses need to be trained well. They have to provide service 24/7. It's like living in a hotel with breakfast, lunch and dinner being cooked for you, and having maid service daily, plus additional care for pills, health checkups and whatnot. Of course it's gonna cost money!
