Girl Asks Rick And Morty’s Co-Author How To Cope With Depression, Does Not Expect His Response
Depression is a bitch and not all people are able to tackle it alone. However, when Twitter user @chojuroh asked Dan Harmon, the co-showrunner of Rick and Morty, for help, she didn’t think he would respond. But he did, and Dan’s words were so powerful, we thought everyone should read them.
“I asked Dan Harmon because I wanted advice from someone who suffers, but is not a professional,” chojuroh wrote. “This is the most basic, general advice I’ve been given so far, and it’s great. I participate in 4 separate therapies, and treating depression is the least of my worries. I know what works for me, but I knew it would help others for someone in the public eye to say something. Letting out your pain can do a lot of good in the long run, even if you don’t feel better right away.”
Scroll down to read what Harmon had to say about the topic and let us know what you think about it in the comments.
Daniel Harmon is an American writer, producer, voice actor, and all-around cool guy
He’s the creator of popular show Rick and Morty
A fan on Twitter recently asked him a personal, but important question…
And he came back with the best possible response
It pretty much left us all ‘kinda star struck rn’
It turns out, his words helped more than just the person he wrote to
Would you give Harmon’s advice to someone struggling? Tell us below!
Sending positive thoughts your way! In the words of Red Green, "We're all in this together, I'm pulling for ya."

Making my kid read this today. I'm older, I can handle mine, but she's a teen and still trying to get a grip on it.
If you have depression and feel like you'd be better off dead, hear me out. An old sage taught me, ages ago, that "thoughts of death" were actually normal and quite useful. They are our soul's way to let us know that something in our life has to die : a relationship, a situation, a state. The error we shall never make is to think that it is our body that has to die... Since then, I've struggled with depression and suicidal thoughts, but I've learned to manage them and let them help me understand what I need to do to feel better. And it's worked! Life hasn't gotten easier, but I've been better at managing it. All my best to you, out there, having it rough and tough. Never forget that we, humans, don't learn when everything is too easy. Your difficulties make you stronger. "He who gets back up on the saddle is always stronger than he who never fell". Hang in there!
Excellent. I would add that cognitive therapy can be extremely useful. There are even some good books to start with. I like "Feeling Good" by David Burns. And you can have a wonderful life after dealing with depression. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/j-k-rowling-i-was-near-to-suicide-as-a-struggling-mum-799715.html
What a wonderful man. Too many people would have been uncomfortable to answer so honestly
It’s so great to be told things that actually help, rather than platitudes or minimalizing.
"Feelings are real but they aren't reality." Understanding that is so empowering! I wish someone had told me that at 4am when I was deep into an anxiety attack!
"Output is magical." Amen! I've been bummed out lately (to put it lightly) and finally got the courage to share my feelings with some friends & family members. I shared some stuff that kind of made me ashamed, which is why I held it in so long. But sharing it also set me free, in a way. That was the step I needed to start moving back in the right direction to become happy again. If had had just kept things in, I'd still be laying on the couch every day after work, getting miserable inside with no hope of things to change.
Yes I would. Actually I will tell my son who is a big fan of Rick and Morty what the creator says. Thank you for explaining a new way to put depression on perspective. You. Gave me a new way to show my son there is light at the end of the tunnel.
wow! The fact that he not only answered, but left such a thoughtful and meaningful answer is such a beautiful thing. I guess, from the creator of Rick & Morty, I would expect him to be so great.
wow pay mega bucks for help and here it all is in a nut shell, thank you so much, you have helped me and others more than you know. We have to be real admit it and share it. dont hide it
Yes, I would. I'd also tell them to see a psychiatrist because some forms of depression are only controlled by medications. When I was first diagnosed with depression it was considered as the common cold of mental illnesses. Now it's a chronic illness. And although psychotic depression a.k.a. endogenous depression was my primary diagnosis, it was later changed to schizophrenia and depression was my dominant negative symptom. Now they are controlled by medication. BTW, "negative" symptoms mean symptoms that take away from a patient's personality such as depression, insomnia, apathy, anhedonia (loss of pleasure). And "positive" symptoms are the sort that add to a patient's personality such as hallucinations and delusional thinking (false ideas). Two that come to mind right now. Feel free to check out the DSM-V (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental illnesses) online.
Best practical advice I've ever read! Saving his post images, and keeping them handy on my phone!
Thank you for this inspiring post! May I use it to post a message on mental illness? We are looking for individuals who are willing to participate in a study on mental illness and work. The aim of the study is to better understand the experiences of people with a mental illness in the workplace, so that organisations can better adapt the workplace to their needs. Participation is voluntary and anonymous. If interested, please leave a message and we will contact you or send us a mail to sophiehennekam@yahoo.com Participations consists of a 30 minute interview whenever suits you best. Interviews can be conducted through skype or phone or (if distance allows) at any place most convenient for you. We are researchers working at the University of La Rochelle in France and the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. The results will be used exclusively for academic publications. Thank you in advance for your collaboration. Sophie Hennekam
I think he was spot-on with his response, sounds like he has some sort of mental health background. It remind me of something the behavioral specialist would say at my job. And the suggestion about writing on a piece of paper how you feel, that's so true because that is one of the biggest tools / coping skills we use in the behavioral base program .About 50% of our clients suffer from depression . Most daysfind myself writing how I feel in my journal it definitely helps.
Really incredible advice, so heartfelt. Just the way celebrities should be acting.
from what others have said who suffer it and from what medical people have said............. medical depression ( which is different than depression caused by circumstances ) is when your body is in a chemical state that is almost the same ( if not the same ) as when you let current situations get you down and your minds reads it as "I am depressed about something, I must be" instead of "is just a chemical state, that I need to go through" and is why Harmon hit it home to those suffering from it when he said " feelings are real but aren't reality"
This resonated deep within me... "Feelings are real but not reality". Wow....
What a positive piece; his input on the subject is fresh. My platoon didn't receive counsel after redeploying home in 2005, in looking back, we couldv made good use of this knowledge. It's easy to think that this is in one's possession in trying times. In reality, depression hides alot of common sense approach to dealing it. It's been almost 12 years and several funerals now, his words helped me see in a different way
He backs what my Mother always said. Write it down and what you do with it after that is up to you. By writing it down it's out of your head and lets other thoughts in, at least for a little while. I use to get so angry at someone and would write it down and destroy and it felt so good and no one got hurt. My Ex-Husband and I even had fights on paper and ending up laughing so hard we forgot what we were fighting about.
I am riding that roller coaster, this was a very clear and helpful communication. NO butterflies and roses, but quite useful.
my boyfriend always humming Wubba Lubba Dub Dub in a funny way in front of our friends and they just laugh because he's the funny guy in our group and he laughed too. but one day when i asked him why'd he always humming that wubba lubba dub dub (because Birdman always said that and when i knew the meaning of the phrase, i'm crying too), he started to cry and he told me what is happening around him right now. i think that depression is a silent storm. no one would see it clearly from the outside. if we say "oh come on its just a small problem, etc etc", IT'S WRONG. sit down and listen, please. thank you so much for Dan Harmon. you're the MVP.
Never forget that there are MANY others in your circle of acquaintance who have battled with depression themselves, even though they might not talk about it. My experience with two bouts of suicidal depression taught me to ignore the worthless but well-meaning comments of those who have never been depressed. You know, the "Keep your chin up and thngs will get better" kinds of comments. Instead, put your feelings out there, as Dan says. You'll be surprised at how many kindred souls there are, right in your own small world. Some are friends. Some are co-workers. Some are even family members who have kept their struggles and recovery to themselves, because of the social stigma that still exists around depression. I also got anti-depressant results from about four ounces of dark chocolate, once or twice daily. And there were major benefits from long walks (preferably with a kindred soul) and leisurely bike rides. Those exercise benefits kick in about 30 minutes after the exercise..
Why 'think' about things like this? Feeling (good) is enough... for now!
Yes. Intend to recommend this article to my patients. Also useful for examples of people who think.
Best thing I have read since the election. I now have it on my wall and thank Dan most gratefully for his support.
Dealing with my daughter for years of depression and anxiety I find there is no real help out there. Dozens of therapists, dozens of diagnoses, lots of money wasted. People always say "Why did you not do something?" Because there is nothing to be done. The mental health system is a farce.
There's far too many books, etc., on "Getting Over Depression". Acceptance of it being a part of who you are is far more realistic and healthy. Rather than it being something you need to "get over", or "conquer', look at it as something you will try to minimize and keep from stopping you from doing what you want. Know that some of the most creative, intelligent, and best people have been touched by depression. Consider looking into ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy). Also, look into tapping (EFT) as Mr. Harmon suggested. Try to get yourself as physically healthy as possible to improve your foundation. Exercise more, be in nature, eat well, etc. Consider seeing a naturopath to check your blood levels for deficiencies.
I, too, believe that feelings are real, but they aren't reality". Great perspective.
WOW what powerful words. I needed to hear this as much as the questioner. Thank you for your wise words. "It's okay to feel bad. It might be something you're good at!" as well as "...feelings are real but they aren't reality." May Grace shine on you every day!

What a compassionate and intelligent response. Naming feelings is important I think. A sort of calling them out.... it reminds you you aren't going mad because there is actually this thing.... inside you. It exists and this is what it is called. You own it a little instead of it owning you.
Carl jung said severe depression usually precedes some kind of psychological awakening, as it often takes us right into ourselves. Interesting thought. Sadly I think it is true that you measure wisdom by suffering not age. From great pain we do grow so that's something it can give us. Suffering also teaches us empathy so we can become an archetypal wounded healer and use our pain to help others.
It is god advice but he's not all around nice guy. If you follow him on twitter you wil know he can be a d**k sometimes.
Very relatable. Much better than "just get over it" or "what do you have to be depressed about." Only someone with the same experiences can tell it so true.
Absolutely great advice. I had horrible anxiety and panic for a long period of time and what I finally realized was, no matter how terrifying it may feel, it is helpful to breathe it in. Embrace it. Live it. I told myself this. "At least I am feeling something. At least I am alive to realize that I am not numb" I told myself to be thankful for the opportunity to deal with anxiety. Many people would love to be alive and suffering from panic instead of the alternative. It took some time, but the severity of the anxiety and panic all but ceased. When it returns these days, I smile and it is gone in minutes, if not seconds.
When depression hits me, I listen to heavy metal (mostly christian metal) with loud volume. It works for me! Life is a journey. Go on facing whatever comes on your way. Bad is good but good is never bad!
I just shared this on Facebook. Such a thoughtful, relatable and compassionate response.
I suffer from depression and anxiety, and one needs to take that step of faith and tell someone! Cos if u don't it will CONSUME u. I know I've been there! Through Jesus' grace I got the right help. I pray for all those who suffer from a mental illness, that you will find the right help! 🙏
He has offered very good advice, especially about articulating your feelings - speaking out loud - even if ( initially ) to just four walls. The object of uttering these feelings is to out them - and to obliterate them. Writing bad or toxic feelings down, reading twice - and then burning them is also very beneficial. Gives a sense of power over the negatives that depression needs to survive.
Yes, feelings are real but they aren't reality. I was diagnosed with depression at age 15 and am now 57. This statement means I need to check reality more often when I am down. I will share this with my daughter who struggles with anxiety. Thank you.

Would I share this advice with others? In a heartbeat. Because it's true and sensible. Your feelings are real, but they aren't reality. No truer words.
Would I give his advice to others? In a heartbeat. Because it's true and sensible and it makes no promises for a quick fix. A lot of times we just need to hear that it's ok to feel sad. -from someone who's been there and feels like she literally clawed her way back to "happy" again.
In my case, I knew I was in trouble and fighting the battle alone wasn't helping. Felt as if I was slowly loosing the fight. I kept asking for help from multiple sources none of which recognized or even validated my problem, until finally I found help. If I didn't fight for myself, it's possible that I wouldn't be here now. Unless you personally have fought the fight, you don't have any idea what it's like. IMO those who attempt suicide are not suicidal but only those who commit suicide were suicidal. I thought about it a lot and knew once I decided, it would in fact be the end. I never attempted, because I was there yet. Not only did I have professional help, but found a friend who peered into that same darkness as I. His ghosts were almost the same as mine. It was the combination of both (professional and friend) that helped. The battle is long and hard and I'm still fighting it but it is doable. At the beginning the professional said it would take 5 years of help, and so it h
No. Depression is a disease just like diabetes or any other. This man has no more right to advise others than anyone else just because he is a famous writer. He is not a medical doctor. Best advice is to seek help immediately even if that means going to the emergency room! And there should be no shame for getting help. And if you are put on meds stay on them. Even if you think they aren’t helping. It sometimes takes a while to get on the correct formula or whatever. People with diabetes will die without insulin much like those with untreated depression will.
My name is Juilet Arison, and I base in USA...My life is back!!! After 1 year of Broken marriage, my husband left me with three kids . I felt like my life was about to end i almost committed suicide, i was emotionally down for a very long time. Thanks to a spell caster called Dr Ojie, which i met online. On one faithful day, as I was browsing through the internet,I came across allot of testimonies about this particular spell caster. Some people testified that he brought their Ex lover back, some testified that he restores womb, cure cancer, and other sickness, some testified that he can cast a spell to stop divorce and so on. i also come across one particular testimony,it was about a woman called Loveth, she testified about how he brought back her Ex lover in less than 4 days, and at the end of her testimony she dropped Dr Ojie's e-mail address. After reading all these,I decided to give it a try. I contacted him via email and explained my problem to him. In just 68hours, my husband came
