After Being Abandoned 5 Times, This Deaf Pup Finds His Home And Learns Sign Language
A ten-month-old deaf Staffordshire puppy Ivor had a rough start in life. Due to his disability, he was abandoned by 5 families before even reaching the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
The pup had trust issues, but the staff at the RSPCA Centre showed him enough love and attention and Ivor turned a new leaf as a trusting and sweet dog.
In December Ivor found his forever home with Ellie Bromilow – a woman, who fell in love with the dog despite his deafness. “He’d already learned the sign command for ‘sit’ and ‘come’ from the staff at the RSPCA center, but now he knows lots more like ‘lie down’, ‘stay’, ‘all gone’ and he’s learning ‘roll over’,” she said to express.co.uk.
“Having a deaf dog is just like having a hearing dog. We still speak to him as we sign and I chat to him a lot – even though he can’t hear a word.”
Ivor has a huge personality. He loves to go for walks and has a great sense of smell. “We use that for games to keep him occupied. We hide lots of treats around the house for him to find.”
It’s so nice to know that after such a rough start, Ivor now has his loving forever family.

Share on Facebookbeautiful pup, so glad they found the right owner for them.
Any well trained dog (hearing or not) should be able to learn and respond correctly to non-verbal commands. It's all a matter of training. Glad the dog found a good home.
Love the photo of him sleeping on the chair! So comfortable in his surroundings. Thank you for loving and caring for him.
What a handsome, capable and loving pup! So thrilled to hear that he's finally found his forever home!
Dogs are a lot smarter than we think. Case in point, learning sign language, such an amazing feat.
That face!!!! Omg so so adorable I'm glad he found the right people for him
Why would the previous five 'adopters' take him knowing that he was deaf and then return him? A mystery! He's adorable and a lucky dog to have found a person with sensibility and love. Agree with Jenna that talking to him is still good, maybe he can hear a tiny bit or at least feel the voice vibrations.
this doggo is such a sweetie, just look at those eyes and head tilt <3
i have a deaf blue heeler , she was a rescue dog dumped because of her deafness only stupid peple who dumped her had had her chipped, traced back to them and 6 puppies were also found and taken to SPCA , I have taught her sign but when she is naughty she wont look at me so I am signing to the air , yes she cant help it she looks at me after a second or two.
I am so shocked that many people would just abandon a dog who can't hear, how scary for the pup. So happy he found his furever home
Lovely, and animals have 6th sense, so they don’t need to ‘hear’ to understand us or what we’re trying to convey. I’m psychic and notice my skill is developing... I get feelings when reading tarot... I said to a mate that yes I’d like some cake too, when he’d only been thinking about it. This is how animals communicate on a deeper level than what we are lead to believe.
So confused. Doesn't everyone teach their puppies with both verbal and hand commands? I mean mine are my own. I just did what felt right. But sit is 1 finger. Lay is a palm. It just seemed natural to provide 2 stimuli when teaching a puppy. I could go on with what I use, but everyone would use to things visually and auditory when teaching a dog how to achieve a goal.
