Dad Shows The Ridiculous Anti-Science Project His Daughter Got At A Texan School

According to data from the Pew Research Center, Mississippi, Alabama, and other Southern states are the most devout ones in the US. Texas comes in 11th place, with 64% of adults describing themselves as “highly religious.” Reddit user u/srmacman is not one of them. But his daughter’s teachers are.

Just yesterday, u/srmacman made a post on the subreddit r/pics, where he uploaded a shot of a school project his little girl was working on. Judging from the text, it was clear to the man that the facility was indoctrinating her.

His surprise indicates that this matter probably wasn’t discussed with the administration during the kid’s enrollment and it was probably what inspired a heated discussion in the comments on the role of faith in today’s education system.

Continue scrolling to catch a glimpse of the paper that started it all and the talk we had on choosing the right school for your kid with Talya Stone, media maven who now runs digital magazines Motherhood: The Real Deal and 40 Now What.

Experts say that parents who are looking at multiple options and are considering sending their kids beyond their local public school should first and foremost consider what’s important to them and their child.

To do this, moms and dads can look at what schools might best suit their child’s personality, strengths, needs, and interests.

“Parents often get very tied up with the academic merits of a school when deciding what kind of education they want their children to receive. The reality is there is so much more to think about,” Talya Stone explained. Here are some of the additional things she thinks are worthy of being considered:

  • Is the school a good fit for your kid’s personality?
  • Do the school’s values align with yours?
  • Do you want your child to have a religious education?
  • Are you looking for a particular teaching philosophy?
  • Where are your children’s friends going to school?
  • School size and whether this will fit with your child’s needs and personality;
  • Approach to behavior management;
  • Management of home-school communication.

It’s also important to note that most government (or public) schools have enrollment zones. This means that in order for your child to be able to enroll, your family must live within a certain area around the school. However, out-of-zone enrollments are sometimes possible, so if you’re interested in government schools outside your zone, contact them to find out whether your child is eligible to apply.

“Research is everything when trying to seek out the right school for your child,” Stone said. “Selecting the right school can be a bewildering and overwhelming process and shouldn’t be entered into lightly or rushed. Allow plenty of time for research, visits, and discussions. It’s not easy to know if a school is a right fit for your child but ultimately, your child will know if it feels like the right place for them.”

“Visit the school and talk to as many teachers, members of the leadership team and students as possible. Be prepared and draw up a list of questions that both you and they want to cover. Ultimately it should be a team effort!” However, Stone also highlighted that in the pursuit of what’s practical, moms and dads shouldn’t compromise on their child’s (and their own) needs.

Of course, even if parents do their homework, things can still go south. Everyone wants to make sure that they’re doing what’s best for their kid, but it can sometimes be a challenge to know what, exactly, the best thing to do is. It’s unlucky that u/srmacman’s daughter ended up in a place where the family didn’t want her to. But at least they know what they want and can adapt accordingly. Let’s hope this process goes as smoothly as possible.

At first, people started blaming the parent:

But he defended himself by clarifying the situation:

And eventually, people began sharing their own experiences about having met someone from such a school:

However, many who went to Catholic schools made it clear that most of them are nothing like this:

Others took apart the assignment and questioned the logic further:

Religious schools shouldn't be a thing. Religion shouldn't have anything to do with education, as well as politics and medicine.

Correction, religious schools shouldn’t teach secular subjects. Religious school should be an after school thing to learn about your religion, no religion should be taught in unrelated subjects

Can American private schools literally teach anything they like? Even batsh*t crazy stuff? In the UK all private schools are still subject to the government education regulator (OFSTED) and they have to have their curriculum approved and they are subject to regular inspections just like the state schools. Any school found to be teaching something like that would be failed and would be closed down.

As long as they don't take government funding they can. And sometimes there are loopholes even with that. And you should be aware that there are state funded schools who teach creationism or revisionist history regarding slavery and colonialism. This is also why many states teach abstinence only when it comes to sex ed. I think there are national standards for testing but curriculum is up to the state's.

Evangelical Christian schools are not the same as Catholic schools and both lack much in the way of oversight while the religious nuts work hard to get tax dollars funneled in to support this BS while screaming about how the US is falling behind China ( with all the racist "yellow peril" subtext) in math and science.

I worked at MBS, the place that supplies textbooks for these horrific schools. In one memorable instance, I emailed a black parent a pic of the 2 pages in her kids text that said slavery was 'kind', that slaves 'enjoyed their enslavement, living better lives in their new homes' and 'most slaveowners were kind, taking great care of their slaves'. She didn't order the books and confronted the school. MBS fired me, but I considered it quitting with flair.

If your complaint is that I wasn't specific, allow me to clarify; slavery in colonial America and the antebellum south. As to the rest of your fanatics/apologists rant, you are clearly a graduate of one of those schools; thank you for illustrating WHY they are horror shows!

I am a Christian (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) and i don't understand these kind of interpretations of the bible (I mean I guess I understand why they exist but given how I have been taught to think about the bible they just seem odd). It's an important religious document but it's not perfect. It's a second hand source that's been changed by many translations. Not to mention you have to pay attention to how words and phrases were used over the years. Personally I believe the creation explanation in the bible to be more metaphorical. I need to learn more about Evangelism however before I make a strong opinion.

I’m asking honestly and in a spirit of learning, do you feel the same way about the Book of Mormon? There aren’t many major religions with ‘modern’ holy books and so I was curious if you also found the BoM as not perfect and metaphorical as well seeing as it’s not as old and has not undergone so many translations. (Again, respectfully asking)

This level of "christian" indoctrination is strangely a US specialty. Compare that to a quote: "Evolution in nature is not contrary to the conviction of a divine creation. The big bang is considered today as the origin of the world, and it does not contradict the creative intervention of God, but on the contrary presupposes it." (Pope Francis, 2014). Or a statement from the umbrella association of the evangelical church of Germany: "Evolutionary theory and biblical faith in creation do not contradict each other because they aim at different dimensions of viewing the world. " The opposition between christiantity and science is artificial.

Who's "they"? There are more than 30 million people in Texas, including some really blue cities, and Houston is the most diverse city in the nation (yes, more than New York). How about not writing off a massive group of people because of some assholes? Yes, a lot of assholes unfortunately, but it's by no means all. Texas is more purple than red and it's also highly voter suppressed.

I went to school in Germany and Norway and also in Wisconsin (all public). Honestly, the quality of education is similar, with each place excelling in some areas and weaker in others. Please do not confuse American private schools with public schools. This gallery shows an example that is hugely concerning, but it is not representative. That's why it is a BP gallery, right? Because it is exceptional.

I just don't understand why religion has to be at odds with science. Just tell them that even if there is an intelligent design and nothing happened by chance how do you know that it wasn't God's mechanism or God's design for it . Personally I believe there is a grand design in life but I absolutely believe that rekigo text have been perverted and rewritten over and over again and changed to acomadate who ever was in charge at the time. I (briefly) went to one of these schools and got this question on a "science" test. I knew they wanted me to say "they died in the flood" but as someone who LOVES paleontology I refused. Instead I said something like "This question goes against my religious and scientific principles as there is plenty of evidence showing that a massive asteroid impact was mostly responsible. High amounts of Iridium and tectites found in the layer of clay known as "The KT boundary" support this as does the remains of the Chixulub crater in the Yúcatan." What this school didn't know is that my parents supported my paleontology interests and I had a literal library of science books on dinosaurs and several PBS series. Got marked wrong but was totally worth it. That school BTW is part of why I'm an atheist. I just couldn't with the bullshirt anymore.

Then we are surprised when people believe conspiracy theories and that lizard people are among us. These things prime young minds to believe in bullshit. Once you swallow that the earth is 6000 years old (calculated by some bishop that added up generations in the Bible) you will swallow anything. It’s tough because I know someone whose daughter’s birthday is just past the cutoff day for her grade, so instead of being held back, she was enrolled in a private Christian school. It was great at first, smaller classes meant more 1 on 1 instruction from her teachers and she was well cared for in school. One day she was very very upset that her behavior was “upsetting god” and turns out she was taught that it rained when god was sad. And why was god sad? Because of our actions on earth. This poor kid put the weight of the world on her little 6yr old shoulders :( Of course her mom marched up to school and gave them a talking. Shortly after, she moved and enrolled her daughter in public school and she tested ahead of her class, so at least they got that. Which is ironic that they were good teachers, just teaching false things =\

I believe in the bible. But I also believe in science. The bible has been translated through multiple languages over thousands of years. There are going to be mistakes. Also, when Moses wrote about the beginning of the earth do you think it was important to include every little detail? Science is very complicated to a point that someone who wants to study dinosaurs needs at least 6 years of schooling just in that subject. I don't think the prophets of old had that kind of time. Moses wrote the important stuff and left the unimportant out. Also, the bible is full of symbolism. Isaiah writes about a cockatrice. A mythical fire breathing chicken. There never was such a thing. It's symbolic. Don't take everything literally. If you're confused do what James says and pray about it.

I attended private Catholic schools from kindergarten through college. Religious instruction was isolated from all other curricula. Science instruction was excellent. In college, I was taught evolutionary biology by Jesuit priests. When it came to sacred scriptures, it was dealt with for what it was: the remains of the translation of translations of the “word of God” after having passed through a million human brains over the course of 400 years, according to one particular version of “the” bible out of about 2,600 versions known at the time.

I used to know a non-Catholic who wanted her kids to go to the Catholic school instead of the Protestant school (both tax funded, you choose which on your city tax form). She believed that Catholic schools had better discipline and offered a more rigorous education. I find it hard to believe, but there are people who still think that kids having to wear a uniform in school somehow makes it a better school.

We had moved and so she wasn't having to leave more friends. The school later said they were not there to teach but to save souls. If they said it before I paid tuition, I wouldn't have enrolled her. How is this kind of education beneficial at all? I'm not religious, but I would always encourage religious awareness and learning of other faiths. But this level of ignorance is just as dangerous as saying all religion is bad and unnecessary.

Many believe in Satan but not God.hmm ok and the other thing people get really offended by Christians and their beliefs ..also if Christians say any thing about non believers it's like they want their heads on platter ...but non believers can go on and call Christians by many I'll names state why they're wrong and they should be ok with it..I mean see where I'm getting at? You must be able to take whatever you dish out and stop thinking it should be one way or no way. It truly makes you wonder who is truly right? . Also religion is one of the worst thing that can happen to mankind. It just keeps you bounded by rules and regulations.

Literal Creationism was overcome in Middle Ages when many Theologians said that the universe always existed (Greek Platonic view) but Genesis was a description if its Divine foundation. Christians preserved and admired classic knowledge. Ironically, after all, science found that the universe DID start to exist after all. There are maby interesting philosophical and religious questions that can be discussed ib a class room, without disregarding any faith or science, but this class is not one of them.

Religion is a personal choice. Schools should stay out of religion and religion should stay out of schools. The responsibility for teaching religion falls squarely on two components: parents and churches. How many parents are equipped to teach religion? Not many. Therefore it falls on a church but so many forego church programs that the church is confronted with ignorant parishioners. As a nation, we are so far from being "Christian" due to self-serving preachers and ignorance of scripture. Its that simple!

The only problem with religion is man. Each person seems to have their own ideas about it and thus confusion reigns. I agree with Casey, religion should stay out of schools and schools should stay out of religion. The responsibility of religious teaching is a decision resting on the shoulder of parents and churches.

I studied most of my life in a Presbyterian school in Brazil. Brazilian law ensures that schools teach kids about evolution and such. I had excellent science and history teachers, who taught us about the big bang, and archeological discoveries, and the primitive humans (who were around waaaaay before 6000 years ago). However, because it was a school managed by the Presbyterian church, we had "Christian Education" classes, we didn't have any kind of sexual education classes, and LGBT students were bullied and the school would call their parents to the school (but not the bullies' parents!). We also had to get to school 10 minutes before the first class of the day to take part in the devotional moment, regardless of our own religious views, and we were expected to participate. I had problems with the CE teachers from as early as preschool

I live in Texas and “Rural private schools” aren’t a thing. The very meaning of Rural means sparsely populated. So there wouldn’t be enough kids to even set up a private school. So this was most likely in a smaller city. That aside, this is what you get with private religious schools. Don’t like it? Enroll your kids in public schools. They will still get religion from rebellious teachers though. My public middle school science teacher called Evolution, ‘crap that she had to teach us’. But she still taught it- bare minimum.

What this young woman wrote is not Christian thought, it has no theological support. And, this article wants to denigrate the image of Christians. Probably socialists are behind it, as socialist media is in the majority. For those who don't know, the socialization process starts with the media and school.

I don't see the actual assignment here. I can't judge this without the instruction on what to do. However, I will say that in school, EVERY school, kids are being indoctrinated. Whats the difference in telling a child to believe in the Bible versus telling them to belive what is in a textbook? In both cases, the student is being asked to simply believe something they are reading. That is teaching by faith. Most teaching is about learning statements of "fact," without a critical consideration of the authority (the "critical" part is essential). Find a school that clearly teaches concepts and teaches critical thinking through all its subjects if you want your child to be well-educated. Most religious schools (Christian or not) and public schools do not, as their intention, do this. To be sure, find and ask former students of that school whether they were taught critical thinking.

How about not writing off a massive group of people because of some assholes? Yes, a lot of assholes unfortunately, but it's by no means all. Texas is more purple than red and it's also highly voter suppressed.

She believed that Catholic schools had better discipline and offered a more rigorous education. I find it hard to believe, but there are people who still think that kids having to wear a uniform in school somehow makes it a better school.

OK, what really bugs me is, I have read the Bible and nowhere does it say God made the earth 6,000 years ago! Stop saying that it does! Literally the first words in the Bible are "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." In the Beginning. When was that? It certainly wasn't 6,000 years ago!

Sent my daughter to private Christian school 3rd grade so she would get fundamentals or basics. They weren't teaching cursive writing or multiplication facts or parts of speech in public schools. We had moved and so she wasn't having to leave more friends. The school later said they were not there to teach but to save souls. If they said it before I paid tuition, I wouldn't have enrolled her. Scary.

Serious question; is there no certain "scientific baseline" what educational institutions have to teach in the US? They are just spreading and indulging ignorance like this.

Yeah. Duh. This is what private schools teach dude. How could you send your kid to an expensive ass school for years and not know that this is literally the basis for everything they teach. I would know. I went to one. They're fucken awful

Typical Texas radical views. Private school or not, the fact remains that Texas people dictate the school books for the entire nation. The solution is to remove Texas from the US, like they, and the rest of the nation, wants

this isnt a regular catholic school. This is a wackadoo evangelical private school. Dad doesnt even say he wanted his kid in a catholic or religious school 2 begin with, just a non public one. I dont think this private school even advertised themselves as religious 2 start with but we dont hav many details. I guarantee the school isnt named "st Mary's regional Catholic" or anything normal like that which would indicate its just a regular catholic school or even religious at all. idk how this country thinks its gonna remain a world leader wen a large portion of its citizens r brainwashed, useless morons who refuse 2 believe in science & history! There need 2 b fed laws about wat is taught otherwise it's basically child abuse! Ur literally brainwashing kids 2 the pt where their mind is mush, theyll b nearly unemployable as adults & they believe in delusions cuz theyve been lied 2 their entire childhoods. How r ANY of the kids even getting above a C on standardized tests is wat I wanna kn

Why is that propaganda even legal? Even private school should be held up to certain standard.. Same goes for homeschooling. Kids after "education" like in this school are not educated, they are just more stupid and full of propaganda.

Good thing we have freedom to practice your religion. Even if we do not agree.

How is this kind of education beneficial at all? I'm not religious, but I would always encourage religious awareness and learning of other faiths. But this level of ignorance is just as dangerous as saying all religion is bad and unnecessary.

Religious schools are fine, but damn this is a cult. Nope, get your bums outta there. My mum and pops went to a school that can be classified as a religious school. They were still taught science and maths. Who knows what's goin' on there...

He'd be better of homeschooling his daughter. At the very least, I hope he's explaining that what she's being taught goes against actual facts. I wonder why there isn't a public school that teaches facts.

What's in the textbook is actually researched and peer-reviewed and generally accepted to be state-of-the-art knowledge.
