Mom Accuses Southwest Airlines For Name-Shaming Her 5 Year Old, Internet Name-Shames Her Even More
The world can be an unkind place and one little girl got a taste of this when her name was a subject of public shaming by a gate agent at John Wayne International Airport. Five-year-old ‘Abcde,’ (pronounced “Ab-city,”) who suffers from epilepsy was catching a flight to El Paso, Texas along with her mother Traci Redford when the incident occurred.
According to the Social Security Administration database, 328 girls have been given this unique name in the United States. Abcde shares a spot along with such unusual girls’ names as Ianthe, Uri, and Abiona, just to name a few.
Abcde and her mom had gone to the gate for priority boarding when the gate agent began to mock the girl
Redford explained in an interview with ABC7 that “The customer service started laughing, pointing at me and my five-year-old daughter, talking to other employees. So I turned around and said, ‘Hey if I can hear you, my daughter can hear you too, so I’d appreciate if you’d just stop,” she recounted. Despite the confrontation, a photo of her daughter’s boarding pass with her name ended up on social media.
“She said ‘Mum, why is she laughing at my name?’
“I said not everyone is nice and not everyone is going to be nice and it’s unfortunate. While I was sitting there, she took a picture of my boarding pass and chose to post it on social media, mocking my daughter. It was actually brought to my attention by somebody who had seen it on Facebook and reported it to Southwest Airlines.”
An incensed Redford filed a formal complaint with the airline. The company responded two weeks later with disciplinary action against the mocker and a formal apology to the family: “We take great pride in extending our Southwest Hospitality to all of our Customers, which includes living by the Golden Rule and treating every individual with respect, in person or online.”
Well, Southwest Airlines might treat people with respect online, but the rest of the internet wasn’t as sympathetic to the situation
Many people started saying that it’s all the parent’s fault

What do you think about this situation?
If this article was supposed to generate sympathy for the mother, it failed. I truly feel sorry for that child, though. She has to go through life with that name because her mother is an attention starved dingbat.
Ok, so I agree that you definitely should NOT name a child ABCDE, and that the child is gonna get mocked at for the rest of her life (or until she changes her name). However, for the airline staff to take the photo and post it on social media is absolutely unprofessional as well.
ind of, but I must admit that I would have had a hard time keeping a straight face in a similar situation and I have an unusual name myself. But at least my parents put some actual thought into it instead of just writing down the start of the alphabet.
Load More Replies...We have rules in my country and you definitely couldn't name your child Abcde. I used to think it wasn't a good law but looking at it now...I really can't blame them.
Her epilepsy is totally irrelevant to this story. Why throw it in there? That’s the point where journalism stops and personal opinion comes in. Trying to gain sympathy so people will agree with you. The only relevant point is this mom is an idiot.
They were trying to really generate sympathy. It didn't work. Kid probably just had a focal seizure or two and now the "mom" is screaming epilepsy
Load More Replies...I feel sorry for the kid. It was wrong what the airline worker did, but the mother is just as bad. With a name like that, of course people will take the p*ss.
How can someone call his child ABCDE? These days, a man in France tried to call his son Griezmann-Mbappé after the french Soccer players.... fortunately, there are laws to protect the children!
well...when you name your child the first 5 letters of the alphabet what did you think was going to happen? i feel bad for the girl
There are courses for expecting parents on how to take care of children ... why did nobody think about including "How to (not) name your child" in them? Whenever I see "uniqueness" like this I'm absolutely stunned about how insensitive/selfish people can be when it comes to naming their child.
Yeah. I always hated my first name. So wimpy and pedestian.
Load More Replies...I feel for the poor kiddo. When I was naming my children, I literally said to myself, "Okay. Nothing they can get beat up for later..." Being unique is one thing. Painting a target on your child for bullies is just plain mean.
Please stop giving children ridiculous names. I have all the sympathy in the world for this kid because her parents are narcissistic enough to have saddled her with a "name" like this. The parents deserve to be shamed for this. They have given absolutely no thought to how this kid will have to function in the real world, how often she's going to have to explain this mess of a "name", spell it out for people, and be overlooked when people read her resume and think her name is a typo.
For God's sake give your child a sensible first name that no-one can make fun of or embarass them.. Give them a stupid middle name if you must, so they can make up their own mind how they wish to be known when old enough to make the choice,
Load More Replies...This should be illegal. And I mean naming your kid something like that, not being shamed for it(it's obviously the mom who needs shaming here...poor kid).
Oh my, I'll side with the mother here, because it's so very unprofessional to behave like that. While part-timing at the reception, my colleagues and I saw a lot of funny and bizzare names and surnames, but we kept the laughter and jokes strictly for ourselves.
I wonder if the staff member initially thought it was a typo. But she had no business posting it online.
Load More Replies...I understand the temptation, you have this small, cute, little thing, thats all yours, to name as you please. You have to remember that that small cute thing will be a full fledged person some day who will have to fill out a job application, its a person, a really real person, not a puppy, show some restraint parents.
I never liked my “unique” name. It seemed to contribute to my problems with bullying and such. This lady has certainly made her child’s life more difficult with that name. The airline person should not have behaved this way, though. There’s no way to publicly mock the name without the child feeling it directed at her.
Is tour name Jace? It’s not totally uncommon. And it’s quite nice.
Load More Replies...She ensured her child a lifetime of ridicule. Why not spell differently? Nah, that would get in the way of being pretentious.
It's a pretty cringe-worthy name no matter how you spell it.
Load More Replies...Poor kid. There should be laws that restricts stupid 'names'... Naming a kid 'abcde' is just as bad as naming a kid "f-ing mistake"
Was the gate agent wrong to make fun of the kid's name? Yes. Does the mom bear some responsibility for this incident? Also yes. She gave her kid a ridiculous name. What did she expect? I bet when this kid gets old enough, she changes her name. If nothing else the spelling of it if not the pronunciation of it. I thought people who named their kids ESPN were stupid but this mom stole the crown.
Meowton Mewsk You can't compare rape to a child's name. Also, a rape victim is not to blame for the incident. Not even partially. You cannot take someones dignity because of where they are, at what time they are there or because of what they were wearing. Those factors don't justify anything.
Load More Replies...Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Germany have laws when it comes to naming your child? More countries should start creating laws that prevent parents from giving their children such silly names. It seems like it's a competition, especially among the celebrities, to see who can give their child the weirdest name. Apple, Rainbow, North... jeez. I'm all for abstract names but that's just too much
the whole post-soviet block have them. what i love is, that we have a calendar, and every day(99%) has a name/s belonging to it. so we celebrate namedays. it's like a mini birthday.
Load More Replies...Look, I don't have a problem with people making things up for names and what not, that's their business. But ABCDE??? That's just LAZY...
@Meowton Mewsk Name shaming on an article about name shaming?
Load More Replies...Americans are famous for picking stupid names. "Pilot Inspektor" is what actor Jason Lee named his kid. "Kal-El" for Nick Cage's boy {superman's birth name} , "Apple" child of Gweneth Paltro, "Jermajesty" offspring of Jermaine Jackson, and North West child of He & Her Who Must Not Be Named.
that's celebrities! anyway we know Gwyneth is stupid, she shoves rocks up her +w@+.
Load More Replies...Mock-offense, expecting backup and support. If you're 'strong enough' to give that name to your kid, then you should be strong enough to deal with the aftermath. Damn millennials having kids - you knew it was going to happen.
Meowton Mewsk (now there's a ridiculous name even if it isn't real), are you really this f*****g stupid or are you just trolling?
Load More Replies...I have an unusual first name- Glinda. Believe me it is not cool, unique or fun and I DREADED the annual showing of the Wizard of Oz while in grade school. To this day I get called, Linda or Brenda and end up spelling it followed by "Like the witch in the Wizard of Oz- the Good one not the Green one." Wicked has been a challenge too...sigh. Strangers act as if they've just come up with the most clever commentary on my name and I've heard it all before.
I have a deep suspicion there is going to be a name change as soon as someone turns 18, I bet the judge approves it in record time too. I know a lot of people love unique names, but jeez think about what your child is going to go through before picking a name. Sometimes things get easier once a person becomes an adult but I have a feeling the torments may never end for this name
I hate when parents give their children an unique name that is not pronounced the way that it is spelled. If you want want to give your child an unique name, that's great - but then make if phonetically correct. Even the Zachareigh name. That is a fine name, except it is pronounced Zack-a-ray, as in ray of sunshine. If she wanted Zack-a-ree, then it should be spelled Zachary or Zacharee if she wanted a "unique" twist. I'm all about unique names, just do the kid a favor and have it spelled correctly or at least so people can pronounce it correctly.
That happens when parents aren't exactly the spelling bee candidates type.. :/
Load More Replies...Parents need to realize that their child's birth certificate is not a palette for their creativity. The child has to live with that name through school.
The mom obviously wanted to give her child an attention grabber of a name. She can’t complain about the results. I feel sorry for the child.
I mean, seriously, when thinking of a name for your child, you have to consider how it's going to affect them throughout their life. Maybe this mom thought her daughter would find Abcde to be unique and fun. But if there is ANY question, just don't go there. Don't. There are plenty of names that aren't super common that are still pretty and won't cause psychological trauma to the child. (I remember reading a few years ago about a family in New Zealand who wanted to name their daughter Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii ... the New Zealand courts made them change it. Seriously people, these are your children's LIVES we're talking about.)
At the very least it should have been spelled "Absidy" or "Abbsity" or something
The sound of this so-called "name" is as cringe-inducing as the "unique" spelling - and no matter how you spell it, that isn't going to change.
Load More Replies...Parents really need to think about how their child will feel having a chosen name for the rest of their life. In this case, I'm thinking the girl is going to change the spelling as soon as she is old enough to write, and will probably legally change it asap. Even if you give your kid a normal-ish name, but with "unique" spelling, have you thought about the fact that your kid is going to spend THE REST OF THEIR LIFE correcting and then spelling their name for other people. No thanks.
To call such a beautiful little girl such an Appalling and frankly stupid name is the sheer fault of the truly idiotic mother. There are wonderful unusual inspiring names out there, and this is Not one of them. No one will ever know how to pronounce it and that poor child already has a disability that will single her out, without her mothers abject stupidity in this. She will be subjected to bullying and psychological abuse all of her life. I know how difficult it is to have disabilities at school and the bullying that goes with it. I have an unusual name myself but at least it is lovely. I am amazed that the name was allowed when the birth was registered. The initial reason for this story was bad, no airline should ever do that but dear Gods what Was the mother thinking when she saddled her poor child with That name 😟
you mean it would be OK to call her a weird name if she wasn't good looking?
Load More Replies...Okay I 100% agree that the parent is at fault for this, but it wasn't okay for the person working at the airline to mock the name when the child could hear her. How immature do you have to be to mock a 5 year old girl for her name, which she isn't even in control of?
don't worry, the boredpanda commenters and the internet say it's okay.
Load More Replies...Hold up! The flight attendant took a photo of your child's boarding pass and put it on social media? NOT Okay. You call the airline and you complain. You don't plaster your child all over social media.
Id really like to know how that gate agent actually got a hold of the boarding pass. When i fly SWA, they only have it long enough to scan it and hand it back to me.
Load More Replies...Laughing outright at a child for her name is not okay in my opinion. It's hardly her fault her parents are brain challenged and picked such a horrendous name for her.
Little girl: ‘Mum, why is she laughing at my name?’ Mom: Get used to it. I purposely decided to make you into a target of mockery the rest of your like. But hey, I thought it was funny at the time. And after all, isn't that what baby naming is all about? Remember dear. Mummy loves you. But mummy loves her wonderful sense of humor more.
So basically people just invent random pronunciation now..? It is NOT pronounced Absidy, the mother just invented her own language and complains when people can't pronounce her made up words. That child is gonna be mocked for life!!
Because she's a moron who doesn't have a smidge of creativity, but she wants other people to think she's clever. She doesn't appear to give a rat's behind that she also chose to make her child a target for every bully she ever meets.
Load More Replies...All I know is, we (parents) suppose to give the best name for our children, that will not embarrass them in the future, since name applies for life. Because a child can not chose their birth name, it's the parents' responsibility to do so. Sure someone can change it later, but it will take quite complicated administration and states' regulations, and on and on. So, to make it easier, parents should name their children with the best name possible. I understand some people want unique names, like this Abcde---which I personally think, risky, but is cute. But the parents should know the risk of naming their kids like that, since you can't control other people's opinions. Don't feel offended. Just simply tell people who laugh, "It pronounces Ab-city. It's unique, isn't it? Thank you."--you know, stay nice and smile. Is that too hard to do? Because storming the internet for "justice and equality" won't help, really.
the airline workers were COMPLETELY wrong in this situation they absolutely should not have laughed at this childs name. but come on the kids name is so unique and not in a good way. the parents obviously wanted this name to bring attention to the girl. idk who in their right mind thought that name was a good idea. nobody embarrassed this little girl but the parents. it's like naming a kid s**t face and being upset people find it funny it makes no sense.
Stupid parent. Why give a child a name that will obviously be made fun of her whole life? Kids are mean in school so why make sure your child will be singled out and teased? Name Shaming belongs on the mother and father for doing this.
It was then propagated by the internet and a so called "professional". That's like saying "her mum did it first so why can't I?"
Load More Replies...I have a somewhat unusual name that I love but which was of course made fun of by inconsiderate people, but I have to say: ABCDE? Really? And nobody forcibly stopped her? Is she going to call her next kid QWERTY, pronounced Kwer-Titty? Or will she get *really* creative and call the new kid ZYXVWU, pronounced Shelly?
Well, here in Brazil no one can give e weird name to its child..... technically you could, but on the registration they tell to not put that name (Michael spin-offs are way worst than you can imagine - and they exists). But this mother is an example of which name you DON'T put in a human being....
Not just human beings. I wouldn't name a dog ABCDE, for instance.
Load More Replies...PLEASE stop giving your child strange names! My legal first name is one I've always hated, so i go by my middle name. Mom's attempt to name me something unusual (to keep all the other kids in the neighborhood from answering when she called me), has brought me a lifetime of ridicule & mockery. And most people don't even try to pronounce it correctly (just sound it out, people, ffs) Being made fun of was NOT fun. Have only met/heard of 2 other females with the same name/spelling. I felt for them. Stop making traditionally male names into female names with cutesy/quirky spellings.
“She said ‘Mum, why is she laughing at my name?’ "Because Mommy and Daddy are idiots and gave you a really cringe-worthy name, sweetie." On the upside, she can always go by Abby.
Mom obviously wanted an attention grabber of a name for her daughter. She can’t complain about receiving her desired results. I feel sympathy for her daughter. She’s going to have a miserable few years.
Dumb name that will cause all sorts of issues later on. Instead of being an attention whore, she would be teaching her kid to have a thick skin. She'll need it.
It's full of such "clever" parents all over the world. It is not even about making fun of the name, it is just plain pain to use it in daylife. Imagine every time you need to say your name you have to spell it, then repeat it several times because the other guy just can't believe it you are serious. If you keep insisting "my name IS abcde" they might even get aggressive, you have to show an ID to make them believe (furthermore a child will not even have proper ID).
Some parents don't know how important a name is and how much it can affect a child's life. Just give your child a normal name ffs. You might think you're making your child unique but you're just making them a laughing stock. Don't ruin the poor child's life with your eccentricity
Oh my. That's an unfortunate given name. I can only hope the child has a different name somewhere in there that she can use in the future, à la Duncan Jones.
I have absolutely no patience with parents who give their kids these twee "clever" made-up names. What might seem all cool to Mom will turn out to be a nightmare for the child. Mom, you are a selfish, egocentric airhead.
speaking of stupid people......are they using panko? Its "breeding", Einstein.....not "breading". I'd say the pot is screaming BLACK at the kettle. Move along.
Load More Replies...I think the mother is an idiot for giving her child a name she will be teased about for the rest of her life. Quit trying to be a victim, the child is a victim of your stupidity lady!
Well at least in the Netherlands parents aren't allowed to give their children ridiculous names. A name like Abcde would be rejected with a firm advise to the parents to get real or to get out.
The name doesn't sound so bad, but the spelling is atrocious. Abcidy would have been a better option. At least then people could try to sound it out. It must be exhausting always having to explain how the name is pronounced.
You get used to correcting people or just not even bothering. No one can pronounce my last name correctly. No one can spell my first name correctly because even though it's a common name, there's a few different ways to spell it and apparently my way is "unique" (but it's really not). At one point I just became like "sure yeah close enough"
Load More Replies...If she's like other people I know whose parents gave them stupid names, she'll change it as soon as she can legally do so. I've met people who were named "Sunshine" (changed it to "Sunny"), Karma (made her middle name her first name), and others that were just stupid. One kid whose name was Jose - like every other male in his family, including his brothers, uncles, fathers, and two grandfathers - changed his name because he was right....that particular family "tradition" was idiotic.
Wow. Downvoted for telling people that the kids HATE those names and change them as soon as possible. Who knew. ...///... Not long ago, a woman gave birth in Chicago and heard the word "meconium" used. She decided to name her daughter that, because she thought it "sounded classy". The nurse had to tell her OVERandoverandoverandover until it sunk in that "meconium" refers to the s**t that infants release when they're born. ...///... This woman wanted to name her child "s**t". ...///... Please, O Snotbaggy Ones, tell me that she should have gone ahead with that.
Load More Replies...So what if this child has an unusual name? Why is that an excuse to go bat s**t crazy and pack bully a child or anyone for that matter? What is wrong with humanity when a name is regarded as an opportunity to round on these people like hyenas? Take a damn good look at yourselves.
They didn't "pack bully" the kid, just one person laughed at her name. Which hardly counts as "name-shaming" in my opinion.
Load More Replies...What does she expect? She gave the kid a stupid f*****g name, so people will take the p**s.
a so-called professional employee should not be "taking the p**s'. she has no business working at an airport if she can't handle unusual names.
Load More Replies...It's bad enough that she has epilepsy and have to deal with that all her life, but to then saddle her with such a ridiculous name is irresponsible of the parent. Middle school will be horrible for her. Did they not like Abby, Addie, Allie, or at least spell it like it sounds Abcidy or Absidy? Still a stupid name.
If you're going to name your child that, AT LEAST spell it Abcidey or Absitie or something. I mean, it that mom likes unconventional names, she can spell it in some way that won't earn her daughter a lifetime of bulling. Or just name her Jane.
Not enough parents run through name scenarios when coming up with names any more for their children. A Scandinavian country, Sweden I think it is, has the right idea with an approved list of names that can be given. It's lengthy too.
I think naming your child ABCDE is an arrogant, reckless, thoughtless form of child abuse. I wonder what over violations the mother has inflicted on her child?
"Meowton", old sod, you are the textbook example of why siblings shouldn't reproduce.

The agents were unprofessional, and they should not behave like that. However, the mother is to blame for the name. If you want to give ridiculous names, get a pet. You do not give your child a name like that. There should be laws in all countries against it, not just some.
Parents who named her are idiots, but the main blame lies in the system that allowed them to do so.
nah the main blame is a fully grown adult who cant contain her laughter and breaches privacy
Load More Replies...OMGosh I sure hope that STUPID mother changes that poor child's name!! How awful to go thru life named for the first five letters in the alphabet!
Well, this girl is going to be called Abby anyway, so what's the point in giving her a name she'll spend her life spelling out and nobody will ever pronounce correctly, not speaking of the eyerolls she will get. By age 15, she will think "Thanks Mom !!" every time somebody asks for her name...
I hate to say it but ABCDE just seems like a place holder name. The parents just could not think of any better than that placeholder.
and murica again, the country with the most stupid people on earth
As I am about to say this, I have to be honest, Raoul; at first this comment bothered me, but, then it made me laugh; being a " murican" myself( one with a sense of humor, too) I totally understand why you, and sometimes other people , would say this. I live here, and I have seen some of the people that you are talking about; the area of "Murcia" I live in, is one of the ones the entire country makes fun of on occasion, and it does not help, that " Murcia", is exactly how a lot of people pronounce "America", because of the accent here. But it's not just in this area. They are everywhere. And some of them, are complete idiots. Seriously. But not all of us. I promise you. Yes, there are stupid people all over the world, in EVERY country, and I know you know that.( I mean that sincerely, just want to make sure you knew I was not trying to be sarcastic or mean spirited towards you : ) ) ...........continued.............( almost done, lol...)

Parents around the world: don´t give your kids funny names trying to be "original" or "creative". In spanish (my native language) we don´t name a girl Penelope, bc bullies could call her Pene (p--nis in english)... So, I don´t think it is hard to find a good name, right? We have rules about it, come on! I´m not saying it ís acceptable to make fun of this girl´s name bc it´s not, she deserves respect.
There are plenty of names in many languages that used to be appropriate but nowadays those names would be just be too easy targets for endless bullying so most parents don't use them. For example here in Finland no one wants to name their kid Yrjö because nowadays that means 'Vomit', Jorma is now a slang for 'penis', Kustaa because it is nearly same word as the rude word for 'Peeing', etc...

About the 12345. Is that pronounced "One two three four five," or "Twelve thousand, three hundred forty-five"?
When you name your child something, uh, unique like that, you probably shouldn't be the type of person to be easily offended. Hopefully your child won't be either. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
if you work at an airport, you probably should be accustomed to all manner of names and not laugh at a kid's one to her face
Load More Replies...OMGosh. This is a thing!?! Look, I get being unique and all that, but do that to your own name. Your kid still has to live in this world. I truly thought this was like the "l-a" (Ledasha) thing and I think that was proven to be a hoax.
JHC, I am getting tired with all the s**t people can dream up these.
I don't have kids but you don't need to have them to know that what these employees (ADULTS) did to this Child is not okay. I don't care what her name is, she is a Child and has no control over her name. She is going to get bullied in school by other children for it and adults should not be the ones to do so, we need to show kids compassion. I don't fly, but if I did this kind of action would make me rethink going on plane with Southwest Airline. I don't do adults bulling kids.
In the end , every adult in this story used poor judgement and hurt a defenseless, five year old girl. A half wit mother who continues the humiliation by publicising the fiasco; the nit wit airline employee who published the little girl’s boarding pass, without permission and failing to cross out her last name; and an irresponsible press for running with a non-issue. The Mother is getting the bashing she deserves, the airline employee will be disciplined and hopefully fired for invasion of privacy and unfortunately a minor child will probably be scarred for life. Children are supposedly resilient, but young adults seared with emotional scars are often marked for life. It’s spelled out for them, like the alphabet.
the airline employee won't be disciplined. right now, she's got hero status for laughing at a child and publishing her boarding pass. mother was right to disagree with that, and if it were me I wouldn't be waiting for internet accolades, I'd take care of that employee right there and then. Secondly, we assume it's entirely the mother's fault, she must have a father, right? And to me, this story isn't about the little girl's name, it's about a s****y employee who can't keep her thoughts to herself. Why couldn't she have just done her f*****g job?

Squire Sebastian Senator's ex wife. They got ridiculed for each other's names. At least Abcde is allowed to have a nickname(if they can think of one for her); Squire Sebastian Senator isn't. i feel bad for these poor children abcdeabcit...9bfb8c.jpg
It's perfectly logical if you think about it: Abcde (ab-city) is derived from Absurdity
I like unique names.. but "Abcde"?? This is probably worse than people who name their kids "America".
Naming your child frickin abcde is like opening a door inviting millions of people to mock and humiliate your child. Then your gonna say her name is pronounced ab-city. Really? Your the one who screwed up so expect your child to be teased, this wasn't the first time it happened and its probably not gonna be the last.
It's the mother's fault ... what kind of horrible parent do you have to be to name your kid Abcde??
She signed up for that torture. I have absolutely no sympathy for people who name their kids stupid things. At one point, I kept a running list of the dumbest baby names I encountered... but this one would be near the top.
What do I think? I think if this had been a little boy with an odd name, the response would not have been that it’s inevitable that the poor child is in for misery. This is because male pain, especially young male pain, is seen as something to be avoided and mitigated. Female pain - including young female pain - is just an unfortunate thing that “society” is doing, so sad. It’s to be pitied, kind of, but it can’t be mitigated or fought against. I think it’s shameful. If it had been a little boy, the vitriol and hate and probably doxxing the mom would have been subject to would have been a while different thing.
The fact that many other idiots have named their child ABCDE,shows there are some dumb people out there.
Her mother is an idiot and doesn't deserve any sympathy. What an incredibly cruel thing to do to a child.
The worst thing is that it says 328 girls in the USA are named Abcde. I just wish parents had some sense.
Yes, smart idea taking the issue international so the entire world can point and laugh instead of a handful of people at the boarding gate. Now the kid will not be able to escape the wrath of the internet for all eternity as that sh*t ain't getting taken down any time soon. Good job Abcde's mom!! You got your 15 minutes of fame and your kid gets a lifetime of being bullied by complete strangers. Parent of the year award goes to.......
I think I'm absolutely appalled at reading all the negative comments on here, and can't believe so many sheep learned how to type. There is nothing wrong with this child's name, and I sincerely and from the bottom of my heart hope the employee who posted that lost their job.....and you should all be ashamed of yourselves. How about this....instead of berating and browbeating the parent and not allowing her the freedom to express her creativity and uniqueness, how about you teach YOUR children to be more open and accepting of differences and teach them to show respect and care? YOU are the parents of bullies if you're teaching your kids they basically have to conform or die. The hell with all of you. You make me ill.
That name is bad. i had a frend named richard head!!!. you know what it is on short
This is just wrong. They should not have been laughing at that little girl. However, if the laughter was directed at the idiot parent, I'm okay with with that.
Sorry for the child, but mother is stupid like hell. Zero imagination, egoistic, spoiled chick. Makes me angry. As for the airlines - they shared personal data on social media without the consent of the owner, so they can be prosecuted on terms of heavy privacy violation.
All names are made up, and all names get made fun of in school, no matter how normal. You're not actually worried that a mother gave her kid a strange name, you're just following an instinct to mock something unusual yourself. You are the bullies you're supposedly wanting the kid to be protected from.
Phydeaux = Fido...I had a friend who named his dog "Fido", but spelled it "Phydeaux".
Got to be one of the dumbest names in the history of humankind. Southwest should have sent her a name change form and the money to pay for the change.
Yeah there's a person that shouldn't have been allowed to breed. She did this purposefully to be able to attn HO herself out her child's entire life. Shallow self absorbed pig.
About the 12345. Is that pronounced, "One two three four five," or "Twelve thousand, three hundred forty-five?"
To everyone saying "naming your child that is just ASKING for them to be mocked" have you tried...NOT mocking a child's name?
the mocking is sanctioned by boredpanda, so it's okay, it's allowed in this instance.
Load More Replies...Apparently her name is pronounced "Ab-City." Needless to say, I freaking lost it in the breakroom at work when I first read this article about them. Good lord.
Yes the name is strange. But shame on a professional for exploiting it on the internet. Fire their unprofessional a*s.
Nurse: What would you like your daughter's name to be? mum after smoking weed: *starts reciting alphabet*. Nurse: Okay so you want your daughter's name to be ABCDE? mum: yeet. Nurse: *Hears yes*.
The craziest part of the story 328 people with the name Abcde in the Social Security Network in the US :/
just name your baby NAME what is his name? NAME.... simple like that....LOL!
Meowton Mewsk, behold, you were downvoted 7 times merely for laughing, then you're the one being called a troll, it proves they see your username and don't even read what you've posted, you were downvoted merely for being you! Anybody that challenges, or merely slightly deviates from the perceptions of their hive-minded myopic opinions when they're in the majority shall be "shut down" (bored panda's favourite phrase) until they disappear behind "hidden comments"( the whole downvoting/upvoting is a so called free world censoring sham) and it goes to show what unthinking sad sacks of s**t most of these people are.

its the damn mothers fault for putting her child thru this hell. She deserves what is going to her and should have no sympathy what so ever.
I hope none of the overwhelmingly a*****e commentariat here ever get mad at any other form of "victim blaming". You can't cherry pick. Anyway, the kid is absolutely innocent here but nobody cares. They just care about vengeance against the mother. Typical. A******s.
they feel fine with attacking mother and ignoring the act of shittiness by the employee because she's white. I'm willing to bet they'd suddenly feel the opposite if an hilarious chinese or vietnamese child's name were laughed at in the same way. it's not a race thing i'm trying to get at, its the hypocrisy and how easily they're swayed by the article and what other internet users think
Load More Replies...There are many people with unusual names in this country and people are free to name their children whatever they want. They should not be constrained for any reason, especially social pressure. I am behind the mother for her courage to give her daughter the name she wanted and not conform to peer pressure. People must adapt to such trivial things as names, for crying out loud!
You're awesome. I love that there are a few people on here like you. Seems to me like most of the people here need to remember there was this guy a few years ago who declared that everyone needed to conform to a certain standard to ensure the success of the race.....Does the name Hitler ring a bell? You people need to shut up and think before you open your mouths.

That's what the situation is about.
If the child wants to change their name then let them but they my like theor name. And i guarantee the mom was not trying to selfish while naming her child.
I think that name is unique and creative and amazing and although I do feel bad for Abcde I am proud of her mother for standing up for her child. I love that name and I think down the road Abcde will learn to love it to because she is 5 so she could understand by now if she's in school that children can be mean and hurtful. It sounds like she has an amazing support at home and she will be loved and cared for. You also never know, the mother has her own very good reasons to name her child that. It is sad that people result to online hate for their opinions. If I ever say anything online it is always positive and that goes for my in person life too. Help the internet become a good thing, not a bad thing.
It's a sign of the times that all I could think on seeing the photo of the ticket wasn't, "Dear Lord, what a farce of a name!" but rather "How were the staff not fired for such blatant disregard for data protection laws?". Ergh.
A name is public information. No data protection laws were broken. The rest of the information on the boarding pass only means something to the airline.

It is a beautiful name. I think it has a way of showing her that her parents were being creative. There is so many names spelled different than they should be. You guys should feel about an inch tall hurting that little girl laughing at her. Over the letters in her name, how grown up are you?
If youre gonna name a child ABCDE, at least pretend to try. Absity would have worked.
A parent has the right to name their child any name they choose - but with this name I am afraid the child will suffer consequences because of the narrow minded sick people in our communities that have nothing better to do but to humiliate others. Its very sad.
Yeah it may sound a bit weird, but whwn are we all going to be non judgemental twats? Each to their own, if we teach ourselves this and our kids, the world would be so much different!
Reading these comments it seems that there's a lot of people out there supporting imposed conformity. Maybe they will only be happy when everyone is white, male, Christian and named John Smith. Diversity is what makes us unique individuals. Conformity makes us mindless sheep.
I'm hoping this is a fake story. Cuz...is any parent seriously stupid enough to name her child that way? Sounds like someone who needs attention to me.
I'm all for unusual names. I ran into a lady the other day whose name was Glorious and her infant son's name was Justice. But when you're lazy and just write ABCDE on the birth certificate, you've pretty much opened up your kid to ridicule and teasing their whole life. I can't imagine the problems this little girl will face as an adult trying to obtain credit and dealing with government agencies like the IRS.
I come from an era of naming where as a generation we were lucky to have names that could be pronounced on the first go (my, and many of my friends, parents were hippies). I survived with a name not normally applied to a white girl. I know Raistlin Wolfbrother, Dazante Knight, Penny Nicole Quarter, Justin Case, Candy Kane, and Fruit Cart. Having a unique name is all well and good, as long as you pair it with a normal middle name and self defense lessons. Both of my children of slightly odd first names and completely normal middle names.
Has no one heard this name before? This was a thing when I was a little kid. As soon as I saw the kid's name was Abcde, I knew exactly how to read it because I've heard/seen it before. And I don't think the kid is going to get mocked for the rest of her life because of that name. She'll probably get "randomly" checked by the TSA when she's a little older for an "obviously fake" name, but she'll be fine otherwise.
I think you are the only person who has seen that name before. I could see Abcidy but not Abcde.

But bullying still happens and many people hate their name because too many people make jokes about it. So it is definitely good idea to give to your child a neutral name than a name that is too easy target for the bullies. If you disagree - that is fine. Go to name your child Adolf and come back to tell how many minutes your child managed to live before anyone made a Hitler joke...
Load More Replies..."I need more filters"... uhm... good name for a millenial!
Load More Replies...Her child is an individual, not a belonging. Naming is a responsibility that should be taken seriously. A name will matter most to the person who has to bear it, at least until old enough to decide whether to keep it or not. A parent should think of that first and not their own selfish desire to be different. Parents need to stop thinking of children as theirs to do what they like with. Children are unique people who will be affected by what they are called, unlike a pet who won't care if they are called something stupid or funny.
Load More Replies...If this article was supposed to generate sympathy for the mother, it failed.

I never liked my “unique” name. It seemed to contribute to my problems with bullying and such. This lady has certainly made her child’s life more difficult with that name. The airline person should not have behaved this way, though. There’s no way to publicly mock the name without the child feeling it directed at her.

Move along.

Load More Replies...Yet another person just looking for something to be outraged about. Probably why she chose that name.
i'd be outraged if some unprofessional idiot published my kids boarding pass without asking and laughed to her face. It aint the name it's the act
Load More Replies...If my dad had his way, I would have been named Don Ferrari. But the law prevented it, as Don is a nobleman's title, and Ferrari a surname

My teacher's friend has two students in her class with strange names: CashMoney and BillionsaDollas
There's a reason countries like New Zealand and Germany have laws regulating names for children. I thought I saw it all when two parents proudly named their son "ESPN", because they loved that TV channel so much. Hey, I love bacon but I would never name my kid "Bacon".
I love Lord of the Rings but I wouldn't name a kid Gollum
Load More Replies...I guess Qwerty was already taken. She should have picked a better name like Microwave or Sink. Her kid will get mocked less with those names.

Of course the airline was wrong. No matter what the little girl's name is. That being said, mom and airline both deserve a kick in the a*s. Hard.
These names Abcde look almost normal: Brfxxccxxmnpcccclll mmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 and Talula Does the Hula from Hawaii. And of course we have the plethora of celebrity children: Blue Ivy Carter, Dweezil, Moon Unit, and Diva Thin Muffin Zappa; Apple Paltrow Martin; Moxie Crimefighter Jillette; Pilot Inspektor Lee; Tu Morrow; Jermajesty Jackson; Audio Science Sossamon; Fifi Trixibelle, Pixie and Peaches Geldof; Sage Moonblood Stallone...

I think maybe she could keep the name, just spell it different. Absidee or something... definitely change the spelling.
I can't be bothered to trawl through the comments, but did anyone suggest naming their kid "Qwerty", or "!?#@&"?
No nametag at Disneyland? Me too. No nametag at Silver Dollar City, either. I really dont care
When her 2nd child is named "Fudgie" (FGHIJ) we'll officially be under her spell...
