Inheritance stories are rarely fun, especially if there is a lot of money involved. Families get in such bad fights that the members might not talk to each other anymore because some people value money more than the relationships they had, forgetting that a person just died.
It’s even less fun when you are the one who has to decide how that money will be distributed to the late person’s relatives. This is exactly what happened to Reddit user ThatsDrAardvarkToYou and she was not happy to take this role, but seeing as she was given this opportunity, she thought she could teach her family a lesson.

The Original Poster (OP) is a 27-year-old woman who recently experienced the loss of her father. Her father was really rich as he became a successful businessman despite having no degree, starting around the age one finishes school.
She describes him as not a really good person as he was quite materialistic and liked to show off his wealth. She doesn’t remember him as a good father either, but what’s important to mention was that he wasn’t physically abusive.

Bored Panda got in contact with ThatsDrAardvarkToYou and she told us that she doesn’t really remember much about her father from her childhood as her parents divorced when she was young.
Seeing that she described him as not a very pleasant person to be around, we asked if she had any happy memories of him. The woman told us, “The fondest memory might just be the visitations we had a few times where he was obviously trying his hardest to seem likeable, however genuine or not that was.”
Despite it being difficult, the daughter managed to maintain a relationship with her father: “I got along with him decently as an adult, and he helped me out of a few tough spots, although we had conflicts then too.”
She described him as an unpleasant person to be around and she wasn’t fond of his side of the family either

The OP’s father died in December of last year after he had just celebrated his 65th birthday. As the woman told us, he smoked most of his life and he had excess weight, so the family suspected that he probably had some health issues, especially because he had been in the hospital last year. However, he had been released and nobody expected him to pass away from a brain embolism.
After the man died, he left a lot of money, real estate and other possessions. Which made the family kind of lose their minds.
It all started at the funeral, which was a mess: “Due to covid there were restrictions on how many people could attend, and they were arguing over who would get to go, and who wouldn’t, who was ‘close’ enough to get a spot, etc.”
To show how pompous and dramatic the man was, the daughter mentioned that he actually wanted a gun salute at his funeral, but it wasn’t legal, “so that was turned down, but my relatives were trying to outdo each other with the biggest flower arrangements possible, etc., etc.”
When he died, everyone thought that his oldest son would be his will’s executor, but surprisingly, he chose his daughter

The woman revealed to us more details: “what ended up happening was that some of them stood outside in the snow in December because the chapel was too full. Also, multiple of my father’s ex wives showed up and while they didn’t fight or anything, there was lots of tension.”
What is more, the daughter didn’t know half of the people there or hadn’t seen them in a decade. She felt that they weren’t genuinely mourning but “it was just an opportunity for relatives to ‘show off’ how ‘close’ they were to [her] father.” The woman even speculates that “it almost seemed like they were already potentially angling for their share of the inheritance then” or they could have been grandstanding, she doesn’t really know.
So you can imagine how much tension there was even before the will was found and verified. The daughter remembers that the family accused her brother, who is one of the few relatives she has a good relationship with, of stealing from his father’s inheritance, even though he was just looking for some documents in his computer which might have been worth $2k of all the millions he had.

This wasn’t the first time the woman had been disgusted by her relatives’ behavior. She remembers how one woman from her family called her a slur when she got a boyfriend at 19 years old, and the family accused her of making her nieces hate their mother when she gave them food because their mother wouldn’t. It was actually their punishment for bad grades.
The father himself disliked that side of the family and wasn’t afraid to say that to their faces, like calling the OP’s cousin gold diggers.

When the will was finally verified, to everyone’s surprise, the executor wasn’t the OP’s brother who was the man’s oldest child or a family friend, or his wife but ThatsDrAardvarkToYou herself.
Everyone was surprised because the OP is the youngest and also, she kind of distanced herself from all the family drama, so the woman’s guess was that maybe this was the very reason her dad picked her or because he knew it would annoy the rest of the family.
ThatsDrAardvarkToYou told us that she was really annoyed with her father’s decision to name her the executor, but she also realized that she was the most capable of fulfilling this duty. “I knew him to be overly grand and dramatic, so while it wasn’t shocking, I was just super annoyed he’d put that on me, although of the 3 options, I was probably the best one. Had I turned it down, my brother would have been next, and I didn’t want to do that to him as he’s a lot softer with our garbage relatives and would have been a lot more upset had it fallen to him.”

But the OP wasn’t planning on being soft despite all the deceivingly sweet messages and calls she was receiving from her relatives, because when they found out about her role in the will, everyone wanted to get on her good side or try to advise her on what to do, which felt really cringey.
So the plan was to get back at all of them for being horrible people or to reward those who still had good in them by splitting the inheritance as ThatsDrAardvarkToYou found fair.

The first thing she did after receiving the list of her father’s assets was to sell what she could: real estate, art, cars, stocks, bonds and investments. She only kept one car for herself and gave one car and a Suzuki motorcycle to her brother, who actually said that was enough for him, but the little sister actually had bigger plans for him, which was about a quarter of everything.
She liked her father’s widow, who was a simple person who grew up poor, had to work as a cleaning lady and actually continued with that job even after getting married to a rich man. So she received a third of the money.
Other relatives would have to be content with a lot more humble amounts and some ironic charity donations in their names

Her aunts, uncles and cousins received pathetic amounts if you compare them with the millions they could have got. The OP also had an idea worthy of a chef’s kiss as she donated money in the name of her relatives to charities that are completely opposite to what they stand for. For example, if they were an alcoholic, she would donate to a clinic for alcoholics, if they were misogynistic, they would donate to a women’s shelter etc.
The person ThatsDrAardvarkToYou really didn’t like was the widow’s daughter. She was a person who liked to boast about money she didn’t have, trying to look rich when she was working as a security guard in a mall but at the same time looking down upon people who had honest jobs like her mom.
Because the OP didn’t like her and because she was really mean to her brother, the woman decided the widower’s daughter would get nothing. She was 22, so the deceased didn’t adopt her, so technically she was just a random stranger.
As the widower’s daughter wasn’t legally adopted by her stepdad, she was optional in the will and the will executor skipped her in the inheritance list

The relatives don’t yet know about the woman’s decisions on their inheritance as she just sent out the letters and it will take about two weeks to get to them. ThatsDrAardvarkToYou thinks she might do an update on their reactions, but for now, we wait.
As for the rest of the money, she will be taking a piece for herself, although not as big of a chunk as she gave to her brother, because she has enough of her own money. The woman plans to donate the remaining money to various charities she is already familiar with because she knows her father wouldn’t want that.

If her brother is bad with money, she should create a trust for him. The trust could give him $X per year, or it could release different amounts when he hits different ages. Money could also be released for certain expenditures, like a house.

I'm not sure I believe this story. For one, the executor of a will is determined before the time of death. You might want a certain person to be the executor when the time comes but that person might not want to assume the role of executor or can't due to legal reasons. The executor doesn't get to choose who inherits what because their purpose is to make sure the will is executed in the way it was intended to be not the way the executor wants it to be.
I mean there's no reason the person can't decide who will be the executor and not tell them... Nor that they can't put in the will that assets are to be distributed according to the decisions of the executor, right? I guess it depends on where it is. Inheritance law is not universal lol.

The widow probably kept working in order to have her own money because hubby wouldn't give her any for her daughter, & housekeeping was the only job she knew. It is a bit much to swallow, but I wouldn't be at all surprised - some of these millionaires are huge penny-pinchers & from the sound of the guy, he probably didn't provide a penny for the stepdaughter.

As children of our parents, there's no obligation of them to give an inherence to any of us. I told them to spend their money before they died. Both are gone now. $1800 was the payout on an insurance policy for each of the 5 of us. Good enough to me.
No, parent are not obligated to make sure you have an inheritance but if there is one there are laws about how it's distributed. It's very hard to leave out heirs from the split.

There is not real money in my family, but on my father's side there we're a couple of house to be sold after various people died. And.... It had been a mess with high drama level. My father and my grand father being dead, my sisters and I inherited their share. My grandmother, who was a kind of gourou of the family (and a b****h) had cast her away from the family (a good thing on the pretty short run). she suddenly called franticaly, got our aunts calling us so that we let her our share (less than 1000€ each but de " worked" very hard to try to manipulate us). I have no problem to believe the mess people could make with millions in the game.
Some of the worst drama is over small amounts. I know of a family in France who squabbled so long over the price of a castle they had to sell and divide among many people that the roof caved in and the castle basically caved in on itself

Wow, I really feel for this woman. My parents basically spent their entire 60s dealing with this kind of stuff (first my moms family then my dads). I can't imagine being in my late 20s and dealing with all the greedy family members. Nothing seems to bring out someone's true personality like the possibility of a big inheritance. IF this, or a situation like this, is legit, or partly legit, then the OP is just as bad as the supposed "horrible relatives". Ffs. I can identify with this woman, because when my Daddy died, all the vultures with outstretched hands came out, and acted like they loved my Daddy, when they treated him like c**p when he was alive, and got mad, because he washed his hands of them. At first by reading the title I was a bit mad, as I am going through this now with an inheritance and my aunts and uncle are trying to give me and my brother (our dad's share) the least amount they could, which in my eyes is messed up. BUT after reading the story, I'm glad she did what she did. Just because their blood doesn't mean they are family!! (Yes technically they are ...but you create your own family people who are actually there for you).......They all got what they deserved and honestly 10k is still a decent amount....lucky they got anything considering most wills only include immediate family, not extended like cousins and aunts and uncles and their kids ect. Good on her!!
I don't know where this took place, but I know from working in the funeral industry. In the US, a gun salute is not illegal, but is reserved for military.
I can not wait for the update,. This was a great way of dealing with them light that Rod Serling twilight movie when the relatives had to wear masks at the last couple of minutes when a rich uncle was about to pass away, then when the uncle died, the relatives got the money also their personality matched the masks they were wearing and their face conformed to that mask permanently to the evil in their hearts, and they were not able to go out in public, I love this story
IMO, selling things and splitting the proceeds is typical. Yet, without splitting things equally (except for the widow), OP invites a lawsuit against herself and the other heirs. This isn't over yet. This approach will take years and years to resolve.

So nobody else noticed that the father was married to a "trophy wife"? Now maybe this didn't happen in the USA but assuming it did, I don't know of a single state where a surviving spouse doesn't assume control of the estate. Wills do not change that. Unless a prenuptial specifically states that his assets going into the marriage were to a biological child, but that would have made executing the will far more difficult then OP made it out to be.
You can't legally disinherit a spouse, as long as the will gives the spouse a fair share like in this case where she recieved the largest percentage of the inheritance, its legal and would be very hard to contest for a larger percentage of it.

Such a great way to eat the rich in the 21st century. Their offspring grow up in a world where it's safe to actually be decent people. Thus when their outdated progenitors kick the bucket, they divide up the carcass to feed others in need.
Even if this is a fake story, although I am hoping it isn’t, I LOVE IT! She did everything right, except one thing. She should have asked the Attorney who initially read the Will to have all of the major inheritance receivers get together, a park would be best - away from people, in order to get their inheritance. She could be taking the costs upon herself and eliminating any possible money left to the estate so that no one can contest any leftover monies due to fees and miscalculation. I've never heard of an executor being the one who decides who gets what and how much. I thought that was the inherent purpose of a will... with it all being figured out before the person died. How is this even legal? Sounds like setting things up for everything to be contested. What was to stop OP from making herself sole beneficiary?

Let's say for the sake of arguing that the police relative was not an a*s like all the rest of the family, donating to a charity that has a potential negative against him would not put him in any of the rest of the families' crosshairs of being any better off than the rest. No, parent are not obligated to make sure you have an inheritance but if there is one there are laws about how it's distributed. It's very hard to leave out heirs from the split.

It had been a mess with high drama level. My father and my grand father being dead, my sisters and I inherited their share. My grandmother, who was a kind of gourou of the family (and a b****h) had cast her away from the family (a good thing on the pretty short run). she suddenly called franticaly, got our aunts calling us so that we let her our share (less than 1000€ each but de " worked" very hard to try to manipulate us). I have no problem to believe the mess people could make with millions in the game.
Some of the worst drama is over small amounts. I know of a family in France who squabbled so long over the price of a castle they had to sell and divide among many people that the roof caved in and the castle basically caved in on itself

Wow, I really feel for this woman. My parents basically spent their entire 60s dealing with this kind of stuff (first my moms family then my dads). I can't imagine being in my late 20s and dealing with all the greedy family members. Nothing seems to bring out someone's true personality like the possibility of a big inheritance. Even though the father sounds like a real POS, whether he meant to or not, he put the right person in charge. I don't envy her position but it seems like she's doing a great job and will do a lot of good with that money.

I can identify with this woman, because when my Daddy died, all the vultures with outstretched hands came out, and acted like they loved my Daddy, when they treated him like c**p when he was alive, and got mad, because he washed his hands of them. My uncle, my Daddy's brother, who molested me, and when my Daddy found out, he went ballistic on him, came around with his wife who was jealous of me, and said that I deserved what my uncle did, because I was a tease. I was a 13 year old child! My Daddy had fixed it to where my daughter, and I got everything, and people thought that they could take advantage of my grief. I did what this woman did, and I haven't heard from the vultures in years, and I'm happy about it. They didn't know that while my Daddy was sick, and his mind was going, he made some foolish financial moves, and he almost lost everything, and I found that out, so I had no problem telling people to stop trying to mooch of my deceased Daddy, because he didn't have it

My sister and I were left out of my dad's will. I found out later that my adopted sister and my step mom badgered him until he wrote us both out. You would think my greedy sister would be happy. My step mom also whined until he added her to his bank accounts. Big mistake, she spent over 60k in jewelry and gave it to he daughters. The greedy sister never came to help care for my dad in the last year of his life. She has a lawyer that she obviously lied to about everything. My mom just passed March 27th. GS ignored her for over 8 years and all of a sudden she came twice to see my mother then told her lawyer we were preventing her visitation. Families can be a nightmare for sure!

At first by reading the title I was a bit mad, as I am going through this now with an inheritance and my aunts and uncle are trying to give me and my brother (our dad's share) the least amount they could, which in my eyes is messed up. BUT after reading the story, I'm glad she did what she did. Just because their blood doesn't mean they are family!! (Yes technically they are ...but you create your own family people who are actually there for you).......They all got what they deserved and honestly 10k is still a decent amount....lucky they got anything considering most wills only include immediate family, not extended like cousins and aunts and uncles and their kids ect. This was a great way of dealing with them light that Rod Serling twilight movie when the relatives had to wear masks at the last couple of minutes when a rich uncle was about to pass away, then when the uncle died, the relatives got the money also their personality matched the masks they were wearing and their face conformed to that mask permanently to the evil in their hearts, and they were not able to go out in public, I love this story
IMO, selling things and splitting the proceeds is typical. Yet, without splitting things equally (except for the widow), OP invites a lawsuit against herself and the other heirs. This isn't over yet. This approach will take years and years to resolve.

So nobody else noticed that the father was married to a "trophy wife"? Now maybe this didn't happen in the USA but assuming it did, I don't know of a single state where a surviving spouse doesn't assume control of the estate. Wills do not change that. Unless a prenuptial specifically states that his assets going into the marriage were to a biological child, but that would have made executing the will far more difficult then OP made it out to be.
You can't legally disinherit a spouse, as long as the will gives the spouse a fair share like in this case where she recieved the largest percentage of the inheritance, its legal and would be very hard to contest for a larger percentage of it.

She should have asked the Attorney who initially read the Will to have all of the major inheritance receivers get together, a park would be best - away from people, in order to get their inheritance. I've never heard of an executor being the one who decides who gets what and how much. I thought that was the inherent purpose of a will... with it all being figured out before the person died. How is this even legal? Sounds like setting things up for everything to be contested. What was to stop OP from making herself sole beneficiary?

Let's even presume that as an upstanding police officer they would believe that there are some bad apples out there and may pick on individuals that can't fiscally prove anything. Maybe they wouldn't be that butthurt. Devil's advocate though if they are abusive it's not hard to see the donation as an extra jibe that they should watch out or family money may wind up being used to prove their ill will to innocent folks.
