It’s nice to put on rose-tinted glasses and create your own tiny happy bubble avoiding all the world’s problems. But pretending that they don’t exist won’t make them go away and being aware of them is important in trying to combat them.

However, people tend to do that as they refuse to deal with the negative emotions that sometimes can be crushing. Though not Reddit user Spartan1694, who wanted to hear only serious answers to the question “What are some of the most common dark realities people choose to live in denial about?”

More than 17k people joined the conversation and wanted to talk about the things that happen in real life but some choose to not acknowledge. Do you agree with them? Are there any more that you would like to add? Let us know in the comments!

30 Of The Darkest Realities People Often Choose To Live In Denial About, As Shared By Folks Online Mental health issues are not cute, funny or quirky. Being called a psycho is no compliment.

Depressions arent just a phase, schizophrenia is not just hearing weird noise sometimes, anxiety and panic attacks are not just 5 seconds of a flip out and everything is fine again.

Mental health issues are real and not to be taken lightly, it's not just a phase.

If you need help, please reach out to someone, talk to them. Let them help you. Theres not just that one way out. You can and will have good days again.

it's okay to cut family members out of your life, you don't owe them anything. if your relationship with them is making your life worse in any way, bye bye! the fact that you're related to them means nothing if they're not a good person. don't be afraid 💖

Firsthand experience. My dad had an accident when I was 18 years old. Massive brain injury. He was bedridden, in diapers, with a feeding tube, at home in our front room for the next 21 years. He died a year ago and I can guarantee I have no idea where my life went in those 21 years. I still live at home. And I still miss my dad.

The problem is more complicated than simply providing food, entire economies and systems need to be put into place so that people and societies can support themselves moving forwards. Food aid is a short term solution to a long term problem, which doesn't mean it isn't necessary but it's not a long term solution.

I know this all too well. They get no supports, no guidance, no boost. Just get out. A lot of teenagers in foster care don't graduate high school because they turn 18 before they're done grade 12 then have to get a job and pay bills. Some are still needing counselling but those services are dropped when they age out. I don't understand why this isn't a bigger priority to focus on.

Same with kids in group homes. I was a volunteer at a home for abused and neglected children, and they get sent out into the world with nothing when they turn 18...it's really depressing. This in the US, I can't speak for other countries

16 for me, and perhaps this post should also highlight that when children/young adults are told that the authorities can no longer help them there will always be a gang, drug dealer, pimp etc often waiting nearby to offer all the things the unfortunate individual has just lost

If I fostered a child who then turned 18, I would continue to behave like a decent parent should. I wouldn’t abruptly stop being their foster parent just because the paychecks stop. I’d still help them get set up and started. You don’t have to give birth to a child to be a parent when needed.

That is because foster children aren't anything more than a paycheck to most people in the US. While foster parents are thought of as generous kind people, most of them just toss the kids aside when the government check stops coming. Another problem that is perpetuated by our capitalist society.

@Crissie Laugesen those sound like lovely people. Yes, it does depend on the foster parents, but way too many foster parents are only in it for the money. Personally, I don't understand tossing any child out into the street. I also say that because it happened to me. Devastated me for years.

I've been looking into fostering recently, it won't be anytime soon, but I have two older teenagers who won't want to stay home much longer, then I have two younger kids - I think it would be a rewarding thing to do and want to do it when I have some rooms spare. And there's no way I'd kick a kid out just because they turned 18

My family has a lot of experience with fostering. My best advice is to not go directly through DSS. Go through another specialized agency because you’re much more likely to get the support you need and the child is much more likely to get the support they need. Ask about mentorship, respite, therapy (group, individual, family, peer, animal, art), help with transportation, long term fostering vs. adoption and emergency services provided by their agency. The agency we worked with provided the first year of college free for state school or $1,000 and money towards a used car if the child chooses not to attend once the child graduated high school or turned 18. The agency specialized in “therapeutic foster care”.

Not necessarily. Sometimes you can get a good home and there are college applications that the state will pay for if they still are a ward. You have to stay in state. There are also many assistance programs for rent which slowly helps you pay in full after a year and a half, DCS will also assist you in finding a job spans applying for scholarships and grants. It’s all about how you play your cards.

My parents were foster parents and I can honestly say this is not true. One of the things I noticed with my foster sisters is that they weren't told that they had options so they didn't know until my parents sat them down and showed them all the options they had. Their counselors or people from the facility just never communicated to the kids what their options were. They only communicated with the adults. Like their parents who don't care or are so messed up themselves they don't understand. Now this was in the 80's and 90's and early 00's so it's probably gotten better. Hopefully. But they did have options. One of my foster sisters is now a foster parent. She's awesome. <3 love ya Juanita you kick ass!

I think about this all too often. The animals are handled so roughly and farmers think they can't feel pain. My dad ( I don't really associate with him much) admitted to me he punched a pig in the head after the pig tried biting him or pushing him. Must've been a reason why the pig did that. My dad said "Pigs are tough. It didn't hurt him." How would he know? Just because an animal doesn't say "OW" and we can't see their tears that well, and they don't cry like we do (well, they do but people hear it as regular animal noises) doesn't mean they don't feel pain nor express pain. Plus, how baby animals are ripped apart from their parents to be slaughtered for tender young meat.

Yes, but being overly concerned about weight is seriously detrimental to people's mental health. Just try to keep yourself healthy and don't try to police the weight of others. edit: yall, I just replied to a lot of people in the comments, but I just wanted to say this: while this topic doesn't relate to me specifically, I've seen many people (especially women) endure a lot of hate about their bodies. if you're going to comment something about how you think everyone should look a certain way or be a certain weight, please just don't. society's beauty standards are ridiculous, and you're not responsible for the health of others unless you're a medical professional. please, please, treat people with kindness.

My daughter (Millennial) has it even worse, which is why I'm paying off my house as fast as possible, so she'll have it mortgage-free, and why I have a huge life insurance policy to her benefit. No but I don't think we're really focused on as much as we think. Like when you're in a store, like Walmart. Ordinary shoppers can go in and if they're not doing anything suspicious likely they're merely glanced at for the most part, just like everyone else you pass by you're not intently focused on. There's just too many people in the world and neither of us are that special.

I hate this. This is what gaslighting manipulators use on people. Under normal circumstances we're pretty good with our memories but we retain the information we deem relevant and most interesting. Traumatic, big events, or exciting times, anything that elicits a major reaction may get fuzzy or exaggerated in our minds. Of course an observer is going to have a different take on events than someone who was involved in the action. It doesn't mean one is wrong and the other is right. It just means 2 people have different perspectives.
