Design is meant to eliminate problems. To make our lives easier. However, that's not always the case. Even though safety should be a key component when making any type of product, sometimes it falls out of the manufacturing equation and the consumer gets a hazard instead. And something to submit to the subreddit r/DangerousDesigns.

Created in 2014, this online community now has over 140K members, constantly sharing pics of exactly what its name suggests. Whether it's a questionable architectural solution or misleading packaging, over the years they've amassed quite the collection! Continue scrolling and check out some of the most popular posts on the subreddit.

One of the subreddit's moderators told Bored Panda they would describe it as "light-hearted."

"Dangerous staircase designs are by far our biggest collection of content, so much so that I've had to make a rule so they can only be posted once per week," the person who chose to remain anonymous said.

"Being a non-specific image subreddit, I wouldn't say there's much of a 'community' in the traditional sense," they explained. "However, there are plenty of users who are dedicated to helping me and the other mods manage this subreddit and keep it of a higher quality than most subreddits with over 100K subscribers."

Guess It’s Back To Good Ol’ Drunk Driving

Guess It’s Back To Good Ol’ Drunk Driving

mckenziedenisee Report

According to the law firm Carr & Carr, many products can be dangerous if the consumers dismiss their warnings and use the items incorrectly. Just consider the cleaning products available at your grocery store or the power tools you use for lawn maintenance.

"[But] when it comes to product liability lawsuits in which consumers seek compensation for harm caused by a particular product, one of the key factors is proving whether the product in question is unreasonably dangerous," Carr & Carr write on their website.

"Since there's no way to anticipate every way in which a consumer might interact with a product, it’s impossible to design and manufacture a product that is entirely free from risk. However, consumers have a right to expect that a given product is safe when used as directed for its intended purpose," Carr & Carr explain.

May Have Been Posted Before But This Is Pure Insanity

Timmymac1000 Report

An unreasonably dangerous product is one that poses greater risks than an ordinary user might reasonably expect when using the product as intended. "This definition makes a distinction between products that are dangerous—such as drain cleaners or chainsaws—and those that pose threats beyond their intended purpose."

"In general, drain cleaners and chainsaws are not unreasonably dangerous because most come with detailed instructions for the proper use and warnings about their risks. The unreasonable danger in product liability cases is characterized by a flaw in the product's design, manufacture or marketing," Carr & Carr note.

So which of these pictures do you think feature unreasonably dangerous designs? Upvote them and let's see!

I think during lockdown, there were probrably a lot of parents wishing this was still an acceptable option. "I was not 'Locking my annoying toddler in a cage hung from the side of the building!' He was getting fresh air and vitamin D in a safe, secure, and socially acceptable baby-balcony."

I Back in my day, we used to put our babies in cages ten stories above the ground. It put hair on their wee chests and gave them a good dose of early character building. Babies nowadays are pure sissies. (What my great grandfather would have likely said if he was alive today).

How is this different than a balcony? The baby is completely protected from falling on all sides. If it's built to code and safe, this is ok.

Well it can't be much worse ... oh hold on yes it can instead of the baby just falling out a window on to the below and being splattered the baby would fall inside the cage and have it's body mangled and twisted with the wire from this mid-evil contraption . Instead of these being called Iron-Maidens these would be called Iron-Infants .

To let the baby get some fresh air, living in a cramped dirty smelly apartment building in the '30's??? Unbelievable. But remember, people used to be able to MAIL their babies to other relatives and the postman would pick the child up with a stamp on it's head and send it to "Auntie so-and-so... and baby arrived unharmed!

Heres the problem, baby needs to go outdoors that looks like a 8 or 10 story apartment without elevators. You know what? Dad is ingenious. He builds a cage outside the window and you put the babay in the cage and he gets plenty of air and sunlight and the little woman saves the back strain of walking upo and down the stairs with that big ole baby. Let's give the builder a round of applause

This was very common at the time as it was believed to be good for the babies. It gave them access to fresh air instead of being stuck inside the apartment 80% of the time. Nevermind the pollution and height risks.

To answer many of the questions posted below, these were designed to solve a specific problem. At the time, many people in large cities lived in "high rise" apartment buildings with no elevators. Imagine being a typical stay-at-home mom with 3 or 4 kids. You live in an 8th floor walk-up apartment in New York. It's a stifling hot summer day without even the slightest breeze flowing through the apartment. Managing the kids on the stairs is disastrous. They get tired after just a few flights and you only have so many arms to carry them. Your newborn son is finally down for a nap, your toddler daughter is hot and restless and your 3 year old is in no mood to entertain her sister! And you're at your wits end! That's where this "cage" comes in. It is built with quality materials and designed with the utmost care to keep a child safe. Now you can sit your toddler in the window seat where she can enjoy both the health benefits from the sun and the cool breezes at the same time! She has n

Not sure where you got your information from, because it's not true. There are balconies in China, and some may resemble cages because of safety railings that adults often use for gardening, but there are no baby cages.
