18 Of The Weirdest Smuggling Schemes Ever Caught By Customs

We imagine that the day-to-day work of a customs agent at a busy airport can probably get a bit monotonous, but sometimes, we hear about the discovery of some extraordinarily bizarre or hare-brained scheme that smugglers tried to use to smuggle contraband. An imgur user collected a list of some of the weirdest customs finds ever made. Though they didn’t make it, you’ve got to give them a hand for their creativity.

Our readers in the U.S. may immediately associate customs agents with national security or the war on drugs, customs agents around the world also have to deal with the endangered animal black market.

They opened the avocado, made a guacamole with the inner stuff, put in the cocaine and closed it back, may be with some glue...

I'm more interested in how they got caught... Some of those schemes were brilliant!

(international) airports employ drug dogs that just run around smelling bags (checked bags and carry ons)

Best one I heard of is the pallet of shrink wrapped car batteries that turned up. Some very clever Customs agent had the idea to test one, finding it to have good voltage but no current, very odd for a "new" lead acid battery. The smugglers had actually drained the acid, made up a batch of liquid cocaine with likely DI water and painstakingly refilled each and every cell to its correct level then resealed the battery and cleaned it up so it looked new. These were actually used but identical batteries that had been discarded and likely destined for recycling. Likely that at least a few addicts had chronic lead poisoning because several batches had got through before this one got picked up.

Beagles can smell things we can't. Leave it to the animals to put you behind bars. How much jail time the culprits were sentenced to??

Beagles can smell things we can't. Guess that is how they got caught. Leave it to the animals to save the day.
