Customer Service Specialist Shares One Of His All-Time Favorite Calls And It’s Too Wholesome
Customers spit out a lot of stupid things, but on occasions rarer than the passing of the Halley’s Comet, they say something wonderful too. Ryan Shipley is one of those lucky customer service specialists who had the pleasure of having a nice conversation with a client, and it was so awesome, he decided to share it online.
Right from the beginning, he noticed this 73-year-old wasn’t a typical grandma. And sure enough! Ryan was talking to an elderly gamer who had to take care of a few… things before she could proceed with the call.
“I’ve worked off and on as a customer service rep for about 20 years,” Ryan told Bored Panda. “My conversations with customers are usually pretty relaxed, I believe in being conversational and not transactional. One customer service job I once worked at wanted us to be more transactional and I remember sitting with one of the reps during training, and he was talking to an elderly lady, who probably only speaks to an actual human once a week, she kept trying to strike up a conversation and he struck her down, I was annoyed by this and have always remembered that call, and try to make sure to be human on the call.”
This time, Ryan I didn’t understand most of what the grandma said, but he kept his cool and just kept jotting down references she made. Eventually, she got really comfortable and made the best of it.
“She seemed like a nice lady, but I had no idea where the call was headed!” Ryan added. “A lot of times friends don’t believe my stories until they sit next to me and hear me on calls, and then they realize that the stories are true.”
Ryan said that the internet reacted to their exchange in a totally positive way. “I’m currently working on a book compiled of my best customer service stories as well as the adventures riding with Lyft and Uber, so the reaction to this story is awesome, it’s letting me see that there is a market out there for my voice!”

Customer service specialist Ryan Shipley has had an experience his colleagues are probably very jealous of
Some people were skeptical of the whole thing
While others shared similar stories about elderly gamers

I don't see why someone wouldn't believe this. I turn 56 this year and have been a gamer since my mid 20's (original NES). Since then I've never not played games and I always look forward to the next installment of my favorite games (Elder Scrolls, Fallout, Borderlands, Shadowrun, any good flight sim, etc.).
Gaming might end up some weirdo old people thing once the young gamers of today are all seniors and the kids have moved on to completely different entertainments.
It's Razorfen (either Downs or Kraul) not Razor Finn :P My guild consists of people 30+ and eldest is round 60. :)
Mum would blame me if she died in Mario Bros. All I did was say Hi mum. "GET OUT! I DIED THANKS TO YOU!"
Everyone is a skeptic on the internet. Loosen up and just let people have fun.
My grandparents, both in their 70's play Final Fantasy XIV (it's an MMORPG for anyone unaware). I used to play for upwards of 8 years and just recently stopped, and their on my butt trying to get me to continue playing; I just don't have the time. I just got them into SMITE (a MOBA) on the PS4 and they had to buy a new PS4 (they already had one) so they can both play; so now they are on there and we team up and play together in a lot of matches. It's kind of fun to play with someone 40 years older than you and they're screaming through a head-seat on the other side of town to "gank left lane" Technology is weird.
I don't game now but when I was a kid I played Nintendo a lot and my neighbor's husband (who was probably in his 60's or 70's) had every Nintendo game ever lol. I would go to his house all the time and borrow games from him lol
My grandmother plays games on her ps4 all the time. She plays survival games and everything.
I had a lot of friends aged 45+ back when i was playing pwi. One even had 76 years old. I didnt believe it untill he spoke trough the mic!
My mother was a Tetris fiend. She beat the game several times that I can remember. She wasn't fond of Mario but she could get through the early levels well enough. But Tetris was her Queendom. I am entirely certain she could be the Tetris masters of today if she was still with us. To the moms and grandmoms that play video games, you are the reason we gamers exist. <3
I'm 51 and I play MMORPGs and have been since they were in text form - Dragonrealms tb specific. I met my husband playing video games when we were on opposite sides of the Atlantic and honestly, I enjoy the input from the new generation in conversations with my guildies in games like Black Desert Online, SWTOR and Archeage. To me, gamers are the best people there are, smart, fun and adventurous.
It actually makes sense, older people palying games. They have the time and they know we only have one life and we got to enjoy it while we can. when you're a teenager or 20 something you have time and you can shirk responsibilities sometimes or just get lost in a weekend in whatever it is that you like. Then, for the most people, comes the part when you have children, and there's no shirking that responsibility... then, after 20 or 30 years of that you emerge on the other side, old and grey but with a lot of free time to do whatever it is you like. Old people, I envy you.
This is my fam. My dad is in his 60s and plays pen and paper as well as has a board game collection of over 1,500 titles. My husband and I play a bunch of different games of very different genres. We've passed a lot of this on to our kids as well. We'll see what they get into at technology continues to advance!
YES!!!! Boys and Girls! Cool old people do exist! We actually live among you!
Me as a customer service representative - the whole room was listening because this guy got on our nerves every week. he would buy his Tesco shopping every week online - then demand a full refund because the meat was short-dated. I spoke to the picker who confimed the dates were completely acceptable like 4-5 days in advance I spoke to the delivery driver who said the guy was happy with his delivery - then I was lucky enough to get his complaint - complete lies. I pranked him by telling him a Tesco delivery driver was on their way to replace the items he was unhappy about - he just wanted a refund and stuff for free. Should of heard the excuses he came up with why he couldnt answer the door or was unable to meet a delivery driver with replacement items - it was hilarious - there was no driver heading to his house. he eventually fesses up that he had frozen it all - when I had personally spoken to the guy who was picking it from the shelves and told me the dates on everything
When I worked at Nintendo of America, we had many kids attest to the fact that their Grandparents were better at games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Final Fantasy than they were. One kid called to get the combination moves for a fighting game because "My Grandpa already figured them out and I haven't been able to beat him since." You have to remember that some of these Grandmas and Grandpas were teens at a time when D&D came out. At the time it was all the rage...still is today. Makes sense that they'd move to MMORPG.
I am 39 and used to play GTA Online. I was so into it I almost lost my boyfriend. For us I stopped playing one second to another as I realized how true it would become. I love him way too much to lose him.

She's 76. I'm pretty sure she's seen all she wants to. And not everybody can afford to travel the world.
