Interiors have trends, much like our wardrobes. So if you wouldn’t leave your house wearing JNCO jeans, leg warmers or pedal pushers (I didn’t just make that word up!), you shouldn’t decorate your house with outdated designs either.

And if your inner interior design is in a deep winter sleep and you’re about to do a renovation, this thread from the Real Estate subreddit may be a real savior. “What current aesthetic trends do you think will age poorly?” the question popped up in the community and the responses started rolling in with bad, worse and the worst interior trends that should be canceled.

From any decor that says live, laugh, love to sliding barn doors, here are some of the most questionable interior details that, chances are, may not age that gracefully. Scroll down through the post below and share what design trend would totally ruin even the best interior for you!

In the past couple of years, we have spent more time in our homes than we have in the past 60 years. It became obvious that our interiors had to adapt to better serve our needs with smarter design solutions, technology and organization. Our new more home-based lifestyles have inspired some fresh decor trends we may see more in the future.

According to interior designer Lisa M. Cini, a new trend we see in furniture design in 2022 is customization. “When more people are using a space, having flexible furniture is key,” she says. Cini says it may be anything from coffee tables that raise up and convert to a worktable to dining tables that transform into family-friendly tables to seat as many as 10 people.

Moreover, “The old tried and true Murphy’s bed is back and better than ever before, allowing you to have a full bookcase on the front, a dining table, and with a simple turn and fold down (not having to remove anything on your bookshelves), it converts to a full bed,” Cini argues.

Another trend interior designers are seeing right now is the comeback of earth tones, from dining rooms to living rooms and even kitchens. “Dark earth tones look best in large open spaces or areas with high ceilings. You want to make sure that there’s enough room for the color to breathe and appear as intended,” says Benjamin Stenson Norsemen home improvement studio.

One of the most popular interior and lifestyle design trends, hygge, which became a hit throughout the world in the last decade, is likely not going anywhere either. Cozy spaces still reign on social media, where much of the interior design content is dedicated to this particular style.

This is largely because hygge, unlike other interior design styles, not just makes our homes look good. It rather creates a lasting feeling of safety and comfort, something we all lack outside our homes in these uncertain times.

In our previous interview with Eva Taute, interior designer and creator of “Hygge Styling” studio, which focuses on minimalistic design, natural elements, personal touch, and uniqueness, we talked about what makes hygge so popular.

“We have spent our whole lives gathering experiences of spaces. Some of them we felt more at home in than others. We cannot always put our finger on why, but we know it when we feel it,” Taute said, referring to the psychological effect our homes have on us.

No other walls in the kitchen because on one side is the dinning area and the other side is the living area. It's too open and to make things worse you get maybe 2 upper cabinets and maybe 3 lower cabinets because the appliances and sink take up most of the space. I can see where people might think it looks nice but it's completely not functional and gives such a small amount of storage.

What kind of designer are you? Barn doors are fantastic, they're cheap and easy to install in area's that otherwise wouldn't offer privacy/sound barrier and don't waste floorspace. Farmhouse sinks are just better. Why the hell does anyone want two shallow, ugly metal sinks that are impossible to clean any sizable pots or pans in when they can have a mega-sink that's usually 50% taller, and several inches deeper and wider than the double sinks that have plagued kitchens for decades. As with every design element, some are executed better than others. Having something that has the look without the functionality is obviously useless, but functionality should be much more important than it is to many people, especially designers of all colors.

Pocket doors are great if you're adding a new wall, but can be a major headache if you want to install one to replace a standard door. If the wall is load-bearing, a pocket door could damage the structural integrity of your home. Or you might have to reroute plumbing and/or electrical wiring to make a big enough space for the door to slide into. And then, if you ever want to install something heavy or that needs to hold a lot of weight (cabinetry, a support bar in a bathroom, etc.) on that wall, you're SOL. Barn doors may not be as discreet, but they're generally a way easier installation.

I like the way the sliding door looks, though I'd probably lean more eclectic then farm house. That said, I think you'd regret replacing a real door one of these. It seems like its good for sound control and as a room devider, but also like a room would feel less secure/closed off/ private with one of these.

My issue with doors are the ones that are in places that don't need a door. IE between kitchen and dining room, living room and hall etc. When I built in 93 inspector made me put a door at the top of the stairs. First thing I did after moving in, took it down. Absolutely ridiculous having a door on and open face stairwell not to mention it opened into the hall and swung out into the living room so it blocked the light switches. Then there was the issue of disruption to the airflow of the HVAC.

In a teeny tiny apartment, the barn door is good only because it doesn't take up floor space. Buuuut, it does take up a lot of wall space!

It's weird to me that people think farmhouses would have such doors. Just the barn.

Remove the cheesy clock from this photo, and the barn door becomes a very cool statement piece

I have no problem with them, as long as they go with the asthetic.

Sometimes you can’t use a pocket door and need something more like this.

Again another thing that I absolutely like I don't understand what's so bad about it I mean it's all about character and uniqueness and what the person likes I don't agree and doing things because it's in style or because someone else might not like it. Do it because you like it not because of what's the trend I love uniqueness and this is another one that I really like

Barn doors are awesome space savers! But I mean so are accordion doors and those are outdated.

Hey man! I have a farm house sink, and I swear its the single best feature in my home! Its 3 ft wide and copper and I can do anything and everything in it without working around a central divider. I swear I stand at that sink every day and stare at it with love and appreciation... Of course, I do live on a ranch, so there's that.....

In European homes, barn doors can be the only practical solution. Sometimes there isn't room for a standard swing-open door. Houses are brick so unworkable for pocket doors.

Barn doors are a practical solution for places where you can't put a pocket door and don't have room for a swinging door. I love barn doors but they don't block noise well.

Farmhouse sinks are functional AND attractive. Having anything in the kitchen JUST because it's fashionable is what is truly dumb.

If the whole room/house has that aesthetic it works fine. You don't have to live on a farm

Barn doors are so outdated and impractical. It looks like people are trying too hard to look farmhousy. I also don't like the 'cottage' look.

Doesn't need to be on a farm to need a barn door, just depends on the style of the room it's in, and farmhouse sinks are just another sink in the end, beats stainless steel double holes any day of the week

Barn doors have been around for way too long for them to just go away. I saw a show with a 100 year old pocket/barn door that looked awesome.

Barn doors are practical if used on an opening where a swinging door would be in the way.

Barn doors are awful, they leave gaps, and the wall can't have artwork. But barn sinks are great, especially for short people.

I think barn doors are a great idea, but it might be nicer to have a pocket door if you don’t want to afford the space for a swinging door.

I don't mind a door that slides on rails like this. I just hate the whole "farmhouse" look. I grew up on a farm. No self-respecting farmer or farmer's wife would have rough-cut wood & rusty junk in their house, ever. That stuff belongs in the barn or the machine shed.

Barn doors are the new pocket doors. Sometimes you need the floorspace or a swinging door won't work.

I think they look great plus very practical when you want to create a room where a regular door would be the wrong size. We had a dining room that we put a barn door on and got another bedroom instead.

Belfast sinks have always been a winner, cost a small fortune for a real one too. Barn doors, fab in a country cottage.

I suspect in Alaska it is there for a reason. Hauling bricks up there is going to be difficult and wood will rot.

Gold faucets, gold knobs on kitchen appliances, gold light fixtures, etc.

We tried this back 50 years ago and we agreed since that it sucked.

Well, what's the alternative? Silver toned metals, which are fine it you like cold colours but personally I would rather go for warmer gold.

Oh god it’s f*****g ugly and there was a period where everyone was asking for it. I straight up tell our clients not to do it. It’s going to look like s**t in 10 years. It looks like s**t now but it will be so obviously dated.
