The hate for msg is just based on anti asian racism. A doctor invented the idea that it produced headaches with 0 proof whatsoever. This was used as an excuse to attack asian restaurants while many other "western" products have msg. It is been proven since then that what he claimed was a lie.

Don't discount that some people DO react to MSG (I'm one, actually)--but mostly only when it's overdone. (I still cook with it.) For people with sensitivities to VASODILATORS (of which, MSG is one), it can cause flushing, heart palpitations, headache etc. It's a similar reaction to what ingesting niacin (b3) can do--and niacin is very beneficial for the heart, blood, nervous system, and skin. So...It's a physiological truth that some people are sensitive to it, but most often only have reactions when it's overused. All things in moderation, yeah?

MSG is just like salt... it can have a negative impact if you consume in quantities, and so does salt. You might claim that you need a bit more salt to get the same impact, but it is not a reason not to use it when appropriate and in moderation.

I know a number of people who can’t eat MSG in any quantity. Instant migraines I don’t get migraines from it but I feel gross, and desperately thirsty for several hours afterwards. This has happened to me many times in restaurants of various kinds, not just Asian places.

How do you know it's from MSG? My mom makes the same claim. She'll demand her Chinese food orders to have no MSG added then gets a headache or stomachache after the meal and goes on about how they put MSG into her food anyways.

No, it isn't. Glutamate is naturally occurring in many foods, and can be produced while cooking, or brewing. But monosodium glutamate is a manufactured chemical that is not natural or naturally occurring.

It's a chemical that you could put on dog poo, and then think it's the greatest thing you have ever tasted. This is precisely why you cannot eat just one Doritos chip! Here in the U.S. it is easy to find in Asian specialty stores, or in world markets. It frequently comes in 1 lb bags and looks like salt. If you have a world market or similar, you might try looking there.

The type of sodium used in the manufacture of msg is not table salt, and it doesn't react in the body the same way as table salt; msg won't affect a person's sodium levels in any way. I cannot consume msg due to multiple chronic neuropathies, so I'm not an advocate for using it in anything, but I do care about factual information. One strong, proven fact about msg is that it doesn't affect a person's sodium levels and is safe for those on a low sodium diet.

hate for msg has zero to do with asian racism. it has everything to do with it making people over eat, making people over eat poor quality take-away 'food'. if you can't cook food to taste good, learn. don't add this sh*t.

I was newly divorced, living alone very near a Chinese restaurant where I ate 3-4 days a week. Beef Broccoli was my go-to meal. But then I got sick. It was determined to be MSG poisoning. I recovered really quickly.

Use of MSG causes my windpipe to close in an allergic reaction. The truth is is that everything can cause an allergic reaction in people. I know someone who is allergic to cold temperatures (breaks out in hives on her skin). To be human is to not be able to tolerate some things 🤷🏼‍♀️

MSG may be amazing to your taste buds, but it wreaks havoc on the brain cells. It is NOT anti-Asian racism that is the basis of opposition to the use of MSG! It is research that shows MSG is an excitogen compound that stimulates glutamate receptors in the brain until they burn out. Use it at your own risk!

Unless it makes it hard for you to breathe after eating it. Most restaurants don't use it anymore, but I have to ask to be safe. A box of rice a roni was once almost the death of me. Yes it is in products you wouldn't suspect. Read your labels

Not sure why anyone gave MSG a bad name. It's another way of 'salting' your food. The S stands for Sodium. But, just watching today's news, there is a ton of misinformation that many persons insist on believing despite proof to the contrary.

The type of salt used in the manufacture of msg is not table salt, and had been proven that it won't affect sodium levels when consumed. It is not used, generally, as a salt substitute, but instead as a way to add more flavor to food, particularly an umami flavor.

Monosodium glutamate damages the liver at long term. However, IMO most of synthetic substances should be avoided, truly - you never know how your body will react in face of some 'alien' substances.

I feel sorry for all of those people who are sensitive to MSG. No soy sauce, parmesan cheese, tomatoes, walnuts, etc. Also for those on both sides of the MSG debate please read peer reviewed articles on the facts, don't listen to YouTubers they are literally the worst

There is a huge difference between naturally occurring glutamate and manufactured monosodium glutamate. Glutamate is a necessary chemical that is found in plenty of natural foods, and is also is found in human spinal fluid, and most people don't generally have any issues consuming glutamate. Monosodium glutamate is a manufactured chemical, and not at all natural, not by any stretch of the imagination. So, yes, educate yourself about it before posting statements that are false.

It is sold under the brand name Accent where I live. If you didn't know you probably wouldn't realize it was MSG.
