Internet Laughed At This Guy’s First Attempt At Cristiano Ronaldo’s Bust, So He Tries The Second Time
Last March, the unveiling of Cristiano Ronaldo’s bust at the Madeira airport went viral. Unfortunately for the sculptor of the piece, Emanuel Santos, it happened for all the wrong reasons, as the internet mercilessly mocked the statue for its lack of likeness to the football superstar. After the massive public ridicule, the sculptor, unsurprisingly, felt defeated. “This is hard to talk about,” says Emanuel while barely holding back tears, “It was too sudden” he reflects on the experience. However, this year he got challenged by B/R Football to redeem himself and create a new bust.
The original sculpture for the airport was actually Santos’ first bust, yet the artist took up the challenge. Having your first attempt at something so brutally shut down can certainly break someone, but Emanuel reassures that it only made him stronger. “I want my son to understand that if he enjoys doing something very much, [he] doesn’t let himself be defeated with negative criticism. Sooner or later, if we believe in ourselves and are persistent, we can succeed in life” the sculptor remarks. With this mindset, Santos set out to create another sculpture in hopes to redeem himself. Check out the result below and tell us if you think he succeeded!

Share on FacebookPretty good! I didn’t think the first one was that bad, it was more of the one picture he used for reference.... But anyway, still better than I could do
People on the internet don't seem to realize how their cruel jokes can actually truly affect someone. This breaks my heart for the guy.
Yes, we always forget that there are real people behind the things we are making fun of.

I really like the first one, it has a character to it -- a nice twist. We already know what Ronaldo in reality looks like, but the first piece brings another perception with its deformation. It is unique and lovely!
The 2nd statue is an amazing improvement in skill over the first one, but the second statue does not resemble CR7 at all!!! I’d say it resembles an American Super Model
Much better. Wow, that's a lot of improvement. My hats off to this guy to take it as a challenge to improve himself. The face before was very lop-sided, and the teeth just made it worse (open-mouthed sculptures rarely look good). Here's a couples tip for those of you in the artistic world; always check your work by looking at it in a mirror / taking a picture and flipping in an image editor. Somehow, it's a lot easier to see errors when you take a picture of your sculpture. Also, if you're sculpting a specific person; always use multiple reference pictures, from multiple angles, with different expressions.
I wonder if the airport has swapped them so his new statue is on display instead
I recall back then that the original statue was replaced by one of a different artist. There was also a Bored Panda post for comparison. Don't remember that well though.
Load More Replies...I think he did a great job. And even the first one didn't deserve all the nasty hurtful things that were said. I bet at least 90% of the people who were so quick to criticize would never in a million years be able to do what he can. People should always learn to judge themselves before others. And if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.
Actually, now that I've seen the subject's kinda Picasso-esque features, the 1st one does favor him more. The second one looks like a glamourized version.
Great job! I liked the first one too, there was something about it that created emotion and that's was art is about.
Uh I think it looks like a pretty good impression of a real life buzz lightyear 😂😂
You have to admit the second one is much better. It is sad though. I'm sure he spent a lot of time and hard work on the first one as well.
I hate to say this and defend the artist but if you look at the picture m\next to the first statue he was dead on. It was a perfect reproduction of a very very ugly pic. The artist should be commended for hos work.
For me, the first statue wasn't bad, it wasn't disgusting to look, it's just really funny and mad people laugh. For what it's worth, I think people will remember the statue with a smile for a long time, longer than the second "improves" one.
the firs one is who he looked as poor teenager and the other one is how he looked after he became rich
This makes me feel bad. I laughed few times because of that meme. Again, again and again I realize how internet affect people. Real people. Poor guy. He's frickin brave!
Frankly - Ronaldo is not an easy subject as his features and mannerisms very much teeter somewhere on the brink of classic beauty and oddly funny... I feel the sculptor would have needed to research a viable starting point photo/expression much better. The second attempt is not that much stronger and just avoids the pitfalls of the first. The man is admirable in his courage to learn what is one of the hardest art forms. Maybe a third attempt will be the charm?
He Didn't deserve such criticism. His first job wasn't perfect, but people forgot that the bust had a creator who tried hard to create it. Nevertheless his second bust looks really nice. It's very realistic. I respect him for trying again even when people were so mean to him when he did the first one.
I actually think he did great the first time even though the second time was amazing
In the world there are people trying to do their best, sometime they get success, sometimes they fail, but they deserve respect … and people not trying to do anything, they never get success and they never fail. I cannot say what they deserve… (And the second always critic the first………)
Not to worry, he can sell the first one as a bust of Donald Trump Junior.
Not to worry. He can sell the old one as a sculpture of Donald Trump Jr.
Sorry, but a sculpture for a public space isn't something we should be excusing mediocrity for. The sculpt was pretty s**t, and the sculptor got mocked. It was his first bust? Then why the hell was he chosen to do it in the first place? The second attempt's alot better, but that doesn't excuse the first one being c**p.
Still doesn't look like the guy, but at least it looks like a human being now :)
Sorry, but but the second attempt isnˋt any better. You can’t even recognize Ronaldo.
