The Reddit community r/CreepyAsterisks2 has been documenting the most absurd, cringey, and plain scary asterisks screenshotted in text messages.
From *sigh*-inducing pickup lines to plain bizarre cases of expressing one’s motion in text, like *leaning closer,* this subreddit is the uncharted terrain of the kind of messaging style that doesn’t work that well for communicating. The research conducted by Brigham Young University suggested that committed couples who use text messages to figure out their arguments can become disconnected. This is because text arguing lowers relationship quality, which essentially needs genuine face-to-face communication.

Modern dating coach Sami Wunder warns us to beware of the texting trap. Sami, who teaches women rational dating, says that going all into the first man who shows interest is the worst way to go. "You don't want to text with men too much because the more you text, the more virtual it gets."

No, this is far from normal (thankfully). I believe there are certain corners of the internet where people participate in this kind of weird role-playing, and these dudes try to take it out into the real world... to which all their targets can only say WTF?

You can find tons of places and people who do that without searching too much. A guy added me to FB friends one day to talk about it, in my language you can use "roleplay" to describe D&D and other games like that so I was sure we were talking about manuals and other things. He started writing *like this* instead. Blocked immediately.

Wow. I'm a roleplayer, used to participate in online text based wolf roleplays and embarrassing stuff like that. But what kind of idiot would use roleplay in real life to get a date? It doesn't make any sense. Maybe it's because I'm a woman, but I would never roleplay even in a normal conversation with friends or strangers, let alone whilst trying to ask someone out. They're separate worlds.

I've never really RP chatted but you get this a lot in some fandoms... people used to do this on Gaia Online and anime foums way back in the day when I was in my teens... there were dedicated areas for RP chat... when people did it to me outside of rp chat the best way to get back at them is messing up their RP like their first entry that said why are you in an IKEA, haha.

Most of these are from very lonely, celibate, geeky, men who still live in their parent's basement. They play D & D and collect plastic figurines which they never take out of the box.
Even while I did some embarrassing online roleplay during my middle-high school years, I made sure to keep my limits. This is beyond overstepping.
