You can get a locksmith to rekey your dead bolt. I've done it a couple of times. It takes them about 15 minutes and costs about 25 bucks. Worth every penny.

In some countries, the doorknob does not have a spring, so when you turn it to open the door, the little knobby thing that normally in canada and the US comes back out to slide into the wall when you close the door, does not. None of the things you mentioned are weird. I had a fire in my house once, I called my father before calling the fire department. Your basic instinct is to call someone you know and trust rather than total strangers. As for the notes, she said herself she thought the note was a joke. Keep in mind that you see all the notes together, but if you actually read the story they were sent a year apart. That doesn't always ring any alarm bells. Most people wouldn't think a lot about these things until you put all the pieces together.
