Some chickens have such amazing owners that we’re jealous! Their owners treat them like VIP (Very Important Poultry) and build them eggstravagant coops that look like something from the pages of a children’s fairytale.

Building a chicken coop is much more involved than nailing together a few two-by-fours and calling it a day. If you want things to be up to fluff, there are some things to keep in mind. For instance, your coop ought to be in the shade (like underneath a tree) to keep it cool in the Summer.

Now, we all know that the exterior means a lot (wouldn’t you want to look at something beautiful every time you glance at your yard?).
But it’s the inside that your chickens will be enjoying, too! Hens are quite picky and need around 16 hours of natural or artificial light each day to sustain their egg-laying.

I was torn between this being a clamshell or a UFO. Then I realized it didn't matter as long as the CHICKENS liked it.
This design should be required for all Silkie chicken breeds. I'm sure they came from outer space in the first place.
So it’s very important that the inside of your coop has enough light to keep your chickens content through Autumn and Winter. However, get some light bulbs that cast a warm glow like the Sun because bluish light won’t trigger your hens to lay eggs.
Also, when building your magnificent coop, don’t forget to install vents to keep the air circulating but without causing a draft.
Finally, keep in mind that certain other woodland animals might get jealous of your fashion chickens’ stylish coop and may try to chicknap your hens.
Nocturnal animals like foxes, raccoons, and opossums are known to this, so get some metal latches for your coop that these naughty critters can’t open with a flick of the paw.

I have chickens. Half of the above homes are impossible to clean.. And you need to clean well or you get mites and the smell of chickens is terrible. Although I guess if you don't have neighbors it doesn't really matter (I live in the city)

In my experience they might be safer in “prison” than fighting off the coyotes, hawks and other predators...

A properly cared for chicken coop smells like hay, is clean and the nest are kept fresh and clean, so is the floor. At night the coop is secured for safty .
Now I want to have chicken. So I can build them something fancy. But I guess I need a house and garden first... And some building skills....
No poultry achievement! None could cry fowl at such eggcellent craftsmanship when they're feeling under the feather.
How creative! My Grandmother had a really beautiful bird sanctuary at her home in Buckley, WA. It was "elegantly rustic". Off to one side was a dog house, which looked like an old country barn - it actually housed a pair of Leghorn hens: Puff & Molly. They were great friends of mine, as well as the poodle Sean Elizabeth & the Siamese cat Erin Clarney.
I freaking LOVE chickens! But, alas, I live in the city in a townhouse.
they are all cool.. some are not predator safe and some can be cleaned easily looks like with a hose.. pretty cool ideas really
