In my opinion it's good to chose a not very expensive place for a first date. If it goes bad, nobody feel like tjey invested too much and wasted their money or feel guilty for not commiting to a second date because the other person chose to spend much money.
For a first date, never a dinner.... Just a meetup - coffee and chat time, so as you say, move on fast if the person is not of your liking.

My partner took me to Pizza Hut for a first date. I loved it. We enjoyed each other's company and getting to know each other and building a relationship, which is more important than what someone earns or going to a fancy restaurant.

I went to a lot of chain restaurants with my significant other when we first started dating. Our first date was hiking in a park so that was free. It’s whatever really. We had normal amounts of money then so we went to normal places. We have more money now, and we probably eat at cheaper places. I always liked Applebee’s when I ate meat. I wouldn’t choose to go on my first date there but that’s mainly because the atmosphere is bad. I think dinner is a boring idea for a first date. It should be an activity or a coffee shop, lunch bistro or drinks at a cool bar. So I can see why she’d turn him down but not because of cost. If you want to have high standards and a rich partner you have to be in those places and run in those circles. Sounds like she doesn’t. A house and a BMW are normal, average things. Nice things but still normal.
