If you're counting everything down to the smallest screw, a single car has about 30,000 parts. That's way too many for us average folk to maintain. This means that over time, bad things happen, and we need to take our metal horsies to the mechanic to fix them.

But the state of some of our cars... Due to money shortage, ignorance, or neglect, we DIY or pretend we don't see a problem when it's clear that a professional has to take care of it. So when the inevitable occurs and we pull up to their place begging for help, the poor fellas know they're stuck with it for good.

There's even a subreddit for such situations. r/JustRolledIntoTheShop is a community that collects "those absolutely stupid things" that we bring, roll, or toss into their businesses and car mechanics are pretty popular there. Continue scrolling and you'll understand why.

A recent study of 2,000 American car owners support the message this subreddit is sending, too. It found as many as a quarter feel they take a risk each time they hit the road as their vehicle is currently in need of repair or no longer runs well.

The study asked people to reflect on the current state of their vehicle and tested their knowledge of car basics. Results showed an alarming number of drivers are rolling the dice on vehicles in need of work — 68 percent said their cars currently have at least one thing wrong with them.

And with so many vehicles in need of love, Americans could stand to do a bit of brushing up on how to take care of their cars a little better. 36 percent of those studied confessed they don’t know the first thing about fixing a flat tire.

The survey, conducted by Cooper Tires, discovered that nearly half of American car owners think they couldn't change their car’s oil and almost 30 percent believe they couldn't even pick out the correct oil their car needs in the first place.

One in four Americans also aren't confident they could jump-start their vehicle should they need to.

Even using an air pressure gauge to check tire pressure can prove to be too difficult for nearly one in five Americans.

It is a sidewall bubble. It is a bulge protruding from the sidewall of the tire. It is caused by air leaking from the inside of the tire into the carcass or body of the tire. The vast majority of bubbles are caused by impact damage.

I know someone who had only one of those, and played it down saying they couldn't afford new tires and "it wasn't that serious". Tire exploded, car rolled down a hill and landed in a lake. Of course the car wasn't paid off and had no insurance.

Bought a set of 4, the first Yokohama tires sold in USA to go on a Nissan Z car. Dropped off the Z car at the tire shop Friday morning, picked it up Friday night and drove straight through to Ket West, FL. from Fayette, County, GA. Had no trouble all the way down or on the way back until I got to Dothan, AL. and then bump, bump, bump left rear tire. Pulled into service station and service man said separation, you can probably make it home, don't drive over 45/50 MPH. Made it to Columbus, GA. got worse, stopped again at a service station, tire man said separation right front, you might make it home 35/40 MPH. Finally made it home at midnight. Next day, back to tire shop where I purchased Yokohama Tires, they took one look and said pick any tires in the shop, no charge. I picked four Michelin tires and was out the door in an hour. Never again, Michelin's from now on everything I own. PS: Those Michelins went 65,000 miles until they were replaced with another set on Michelins. Never again

I was driving on the freeway in SF, CA. We slowed to a stop with congestion and I happened to look at another driver's left front first. It had a huge bulge similar to this. Honked until he rolled down his window. I pointed it out and he pulled over as soon as traffic allowed.

You have to be careful when parallel parking. In cities in Massachusetts and New York, classier cities use cut stone for their curb and gutter. Run into one of those and you can ruin the bead, the seal between the tire and the wheel. When air leaks from the bead, it can warp the jacket of the tire.

This had to be a created situation. It's obvious -- due to lack of texture there -- that the areas of bubbling have been thinned with an acidic solution or some sort.

Notice how all the bulges - including the small ones on the bottom left - are pretty evenly spaced. Nothing could do that in "real life," except a manufacturing error with assembling the steel belts. There was some kind of repetitive error with the machine putting the belts in place. And they more-or-less progress from small on the bottom left to the giant one, or vice-versa.

Whee! Clamp it to the tire machine and add 100 more psi! That's a very strange example of sidewall bubbles... My fifty cents is on the manufacturer. Can't read the name, might be General. Put a tube in it, you'll get another 10 miles out of it at 20 MPH...
